Express News Service Posted online: Wed Aug 03 2011, 02:30 hrs
Surat : Tension gripped Tarsadi village and neighbouring areas after a
statue of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar was found to be desecrated on Monday
morning.

Police have been deployed in the area.

Sources said that Thakore Parmar, a resident of Tarsadi village, went
to garland Babasaheb's statue near Shraddha Plaza on Monday morning as
per his daily routine when he found that some miscreant had pasted mud
on the statue's face and removed Babasaheb's trademark spectacles.
Parmar immediately informed the locals and a large crowd gathered in
no time.

The police, including senior officials, also rushed to the spot and
tried to pacify the angry crowd. The statue was later bathed with milk
and water and garlanded. The mob dispersed only after the Kosamba
police promised swift action to hunt down the miscreant.

Vijay Ilavia, president of Dalit Sena in Mangrol taluka, said, "The
police have assured us that they would investigate and catch the
suspect. We will also keep a watch during night."

Police sub inspector Dhanji Vaghela said a complaint had been
registered and patrolling intensified in the area.
