Re: [ZESTCaste] Special screening of รข€˜Dr. Ambedkar' evokes good response in Hosur

Dear All:

Why are we blind towards inequities in the world? We believe in karma or sin (many Hindus, Christians and some Budhists- I am part of Soka Gaki international where i am battling this attitude to poor).  Perhaps the Muslims are a bit better on equity front but not necessarily democracy - they pay tax to the mosque for the poor (whether they get used or not merits investigation). They believe in islamic banking.. no interest.

Let us apply Karma/sin theory to our own lives, but not to our attitudes towards the poor, dalits, blacks, adivasis and women.  In India we elite spend Rs 2000 on a meal without blinking an eye lid, when we are reluctant to pay the same to domestic workers for a month for two hours work.  I am repeatedly told the poor are poor as they must have done bad deeds earlier.

Governments and banks, indirectly, also believe the same.  I am offered loans at 12% on a daily basis on my cell phone,  while the poor- mainly dalits, adivasis, landless, migrant workers-  have to get loan at a much higher rate. Is this justice? This is not true just of India, but also neighboring countries

It is time we know the rights of domestic workers, home based workers,  drivers, flower vendors, vegetable sellers, construction workers  and innumerable unorganised workers who make our lives easy (mainly from marginalised communities), and ensure that we comply with rule of the land and help them get the facilities they are due.

Companies must stop informalizing workers to evade labor labor laws. Do you know that the proportion of informal workers has increased. Where is corporate responsibility? To throw pittance, after making workers poorer?

Bharatiar at the time of independence "said now our land, oceans, trees are ours- equally", but is it? The government alone is not to blame, but the global economic order is to blame.

Jat protesters welcome BSP's support for reservation
2011-03-11 17:20:00

Jat protesters on Friday welcomed Bahujan Samaj Party's (BSP) support
for reservation of the community in government jobs and educational
institutions.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati who is also the head of BSP on
Thursday expressed her support to the Jat's demands for reservation
and appealed the central government to accept their demands.

Yashpal Malik, a Jat leader said: "We have been appealing to all the
political parties to raise our demands in the Parliament. BSP is the
first party to seriously ponder over our demands. We sincerely thank
them"

Thousands of Jats have blocked railway tracks in several parts of
Uttar Pradesh since March 6, demanding 27 percent quotas for their
community.

Because of this, the railways had to cancel 14 trains and divert the
routes of 20 others over the last few days.

Jats are bracketed with Other Backward Class (OBC). (ANI)

[ZESTCaste] No collateral required for loans to SC/ST: Mukherjee

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/economy/finance/no-collateral-required-for-loans-to-sc/st-mukherjee/articleshow/7678855.cms

No collateral required for loans to SC/ST: Mukherjee

NEW DELHI: The government today said the provision of collateral
security for getting loans from banks has been waived for SC/ST as
part of measures to grant them easier access to credit.

"There is no need for collateral security for these sections for
getting bank loans," Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee told the Lok
Sabha while replying to supplementaries during the Question Hour.

He said banks should not insist on deposits while considering loan
applications under government sponsored poverty alleviation
schemes/self-employment programmes from borrowers of these (SC/ST)
communities.

In case of rejection of loan applications of SC/ST, it should be done
at the next higher level instead of at the branch level indicating
proper reasons for rejection, he said.

Mukherjee said banks have been asked to create greater awareness among
SC/STs in order to encourage them to access credit facilities.

"Field staff should contact such borrowers to explain schemes and
their advantages," he said.

Story behind Maya's huge wealth no secret: SP
Press Trust Of India
Posted on Mar 10, 2011 at 05:44pm IST

Lucknow: A day after the end of its three-day agitation against
Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party on Thursday came
down heavily against the Chief Minister, saying everyone knew how she
had misused her position to amass huge wealth despite her humble
beginnings.

"I am not saying anything much as she is a woman. She did not even
have status worth Rs 100 and now has crores, everyone knows how this
happened," SP leader Shivpal Singh Yadav, who appeared before the
media with a bandage on his head told reporters.

Alleging that he was beaten up by policemen while coming out of the
district jail on Thursday morning, he said the protocol in view of his
being Leader of the opposition in the state Assembly was not followed.

Story behind Maya's huge wealth no secret: SP

The party workers were brutally assaulted by policemen despite the
fact they were peaceful and had not damaged any public property
anywhere in the state during the agitation, Yadav said.

Accusing officers of perpetrating atrocities on party workers during
the three-day stir, he asked them to be ready to face the consequences
after SP came to power in the state.

"Our leader Mulayam Singh Yadav had faced emergency and he is not at
all afraid of Mayawati and the dalal (broker) officers surrounding
her," Yadav said terming the three-day SP agitation, which ended on
Wednesday, as successful.

He also said that Mayawati did not have the status to stand in front
of party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav.

[ZESTCaste] Inter-caste romance sparks fury, man kills sister

Inter-caste romance sparks fury, man kills sister
2011-03-10 15:00:00

Agra, March 10 (IANS) In what appears to be another case of honour
killing, a man here has been arrested for killing his teen sister who
was in love with a boy from a different caste, police said Thursday.
He also fired a bullet at the boy's father.

Ravi Chauhan, who is in his 30s and Wednesday evening confessed his
crime, allegedly shot his 16-year-old sister Geeta. Her body was found
in the Taj Ganj area Wednesday morning, a day after the killing.

Detailing the incident, police said that Geeta, a Class 11 student,
was in love with Akash Dheemer. This was something the family did not
approve of as they belonged to different castes.

On Tuesday, Ravi allegedly murdered his sister and with two friends
went looking for Akash. While they could not find him, they spotted
Akash's father Satyendra Dheemer and shot him in the leg.

Locals of the area caught Ravi and beat him up mercilessly before
handing him over to police in a serious condition Tuesday evening,
officials said.

Ravi, who was admitted to a district hospital, confessed to the murder
Wednesday evening.

Geeta and Akash fell in love when she went to stay with her uncle,
near Akash's home. The love affair came to light when Ravi's wife
noticed Geeta talking over the mobile phone for long hours with Akash.

Police is looking for Ravi's friends who helped him.

'Honour killing cases occur when super ego propped by false sense of
pride based on intense caste feelings grip individuals,' said
psychiatrist K.C. Gurnani.

Social activist Sudhir Gupta added that a conservative and tradition
bound society is unable to keep pace with changing perceptions and the
freedom now enjoyed by the younger generation.

[ZESTCaste] No death for Manoj-Babli 'killers'

http://www.timesnow.tv/No-death-for-Manoj-Babli-killers/articleshow/4367515.cms

No death for Manoj-Babli 'killers'
11 Mar 2011, 1533 hrs IST, AGENCIES
The Punjab and Haryana High court has commuted death sentence of four
convicts to life imprisonment including the prime conspirator, Ganga
Raj, in the Manoj-Babli double murder case. Karnal court had
pronounced death for 5 and life sentence for 2 accused for killing
Manoj and Babli of Kaithal for marrying within the gotra.

The Manoj-Babli honour killing case was the honour killing of Indian
newly-weds Manoj Banwala and Babli in June 2007 and the successive
court case which historically convicted defendants for an honor
killing. The killing was ordered by a Khap panchayat (Khap), a
religious caste-based council among Jats, in their Karora village in
Kaithal district, Haryana.

In March 2010 a Karnal district court sentenced the five perpetrators
to be executed, the first time an Indian court had done so in an
honour killing case. The Khap head who ordered but did not take part
in the killings received a life sentence, and the driver involved in
the abduction a seven-year prison term. According to Home Minister P.
Chidambaram, the UPA-led central government was to propose an
amendment to the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in response to the deaths of
Manoj and Babli, making honour killings a "distinct offense".

Manoj and Babli belonged to the Banwala gotra, a Jat community, and
were therefore considered to be siblings despite not being directly
related. As a result any union between them would be invalid and
incestuous according to the 'Dharmaล›ฤstra', a Hindu text of conduct
and law. Nevertheless the couple went ahead with their marriage,
following which they were abducted and killed by Babli's relatives.

3 Barmer cops suspended for keeping Dalit in illegal custody

TNN | Mar 11, 2011, 01.55am IST

JAIPUR: Three policemen, including the in-charge of Sindhari police
station in Barmer district, were on Thursday suspended for keeping a
dalit man in illegal custody and severely beating him up.

The victim, identified as Jabarnath, alleged that the cops threatened
to implicate him and demanded a bribe of Rs 15,000. Jabarnath
sustained injuries and is currently undergoing treatment.

Barmer SP Santosh Chalke said the victim was a suspected of theft and
was summoned to the Sindhari police station. He added that Sindhari
police station in-charge and two other constables have been suspended
till completion of a probe into the incident.

However, Jabarnath said that he was called to the police station on
March 2 and kept there for six days.

"No case was registered against me. Two constables of the police
station demanded Rs 15000 to release me. When I could pay them the
money, they let me go after six days but only after severely thrashing
me," the victim said.

Jabarnath said that he was taken to a hospital after he went home with
injuries on his body.

Earlier, Dalit rights activists in the state had created an uproar
after a Dalit RTI activist was beaten up in a village of same
district.

Dalit families of Husheypura village in Alwar district and Chandpur in
Bharatpur district had fled from their houses after they were attacked
by members of another community over petty disputes.

[ZESTCaste] Dalit accuses police of illegal confinement in Rajasthan

Dalit accuses police of illegal confinement in Rajasthan
Thursday, March 10, 2011 6:31:28 PM by IANS ( Leave a comment )
Barmer (Rajasthan), March 10 (IANS) A Dalit man here Thursday accused
the police of falsely implicating him in a theft case and keeping him
in the lock-up for six days as he could not pay a bribe of Rs.15,000.

"I was summoned to the police station March 2 and kept in the lock-up
for six days. They said I was involved in a theft case," the victim
Jabarnath told IANS.

He alleged that two constables of Sindhari police station asked him
for a bribe of Rs.15,000 to release him.

"I am poor and so could not pay the bribe. They released me Tuesday
after brutally beating me up. I went home and my family got me
admitted to a hospital," he said.

Superintendent of Police (Barmer) Thursday suspended three policemen
over the incident.

"We are looking into the case and will have a detailed probe," he said.

Rajasthan has seen a spurt in crimes against Dalits, with the National
Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) putting the state at second position in
the country in terms of number of atrocities against Scheduled Castes
and Scheduled Tribes.
