'Atrocity' case quashed
TNN, Aug 9, 2010, 09.54pm IST
BELGAUM: The high court circuit Bench of Dharwad has quashed the
criminal case filed by the police department against two Belgaum
journalists under SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, saying "there
is no question of atrocity arising in accident cases".
Marihal police had registered an atrocity case against journalists
Vilas Joshi and Ramesh Hiremath on June 9, 2009. In the chargesheet,
it was mentioned that the duo had "allegedly" assaulted a truck driver
belonging to Scheduled Caste and abused him in filthy language. This,
they did, after the truck driver "allegedly" hit their car in Belgaum
(North) traffic police station limits.
Dismissing the case, Justice Huluvadi G Ramesh said journalists "were
purposefully implicated in the case by the police department". As
there was no old relation or individual identification between the
complainant and the journalists, no question of atrocity exists here,
he added. The court also took the police department to task for
building a "false case" against the journalists.

Equal Opportunity Commission likely to be set up
Press Trust of India / New Delhi August 09, 2010, 16:37 IST
The government is mulling setting up the Equal Opportunity Commission
as recommended by the Sachar Committee in its report on social,
economic and educational status of Muslims, the Rajya Sabha was
informed today.
The committee had recommended setting up of such a commission to look
into the grievances of the deprived groups, Minority Affairs Minister
Salman Khurshid said during Question Hour.
He said as per a recent decision taken by his ministry, MPs and MLAs
could attend meetings of the 15-point committee for the welfare of
minorities.
Khurshid said the government has identified 90 minority concentration
districts (MCDs) on the basis of substantial minority population and
relative backwardness based on data of 2001 census.
He said the recommendations of the Ranganath Misra Commission were
under consideration. The commission had recommended 15 per cent
reservation for Muslims in education and employment and also suggested
inclusion of Muslim and Christian Dalits in SC List.

[ZESTCaste] BSP `misusing'' Ambedkar''s name for political gains, says BJP

BSP `misusing'' Ambedkar''s name for political gains, says BJP
PTI
Indore, Aug 9 (PTI) BJP today criticised the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)
for "misusing" the name of B R Ambedkar for political gains and
stressed it will present the nationalist face of the Dalit icon before
the people."BSP has misused the name of Ambedkar to increase its vote
bank and presented before them only one side of his multi -faceted
personality. Ambedkar was a patriot and BJP will now highlight his
nationalist face among the people," BJP's Anusuchit Jati (SC) Morcha
President Dushyant Kumar Gautam told reporters here.Gautam dismissed
suggestions that in order to spread its base among the Dalits, the
saffron outfit is trying to encash the image of Ambedkar. BJP has
always honoured the "champion of Dalits", he said.He said the Ambedkar
memorial situated at Mhow near here was completed during the BJP's
rule, while it was in dilapidated state during the Congress
Government.Even the house in Delhi where the architect of Indian
Constitution breathed his last was converted into a memorial during
BJP-led NDA Government's regime, Gautam said.He also highlighted that
Ambedkar was conferred `Bharat Ratna', after a long wait of 34 years
after his demise, in the year 1990 when a non-Congress Government was
in power at the Centre.
