Dalit students seek security

September 19th, 2010

DC Correspondent

Hyderabad, Sept. 18: Dalit students of the Osmania University have
asked the police for protection from TRS-affiliated student
organisations and upper caste students.

Students leaders of SC, ST, BC and minorities took out a huge rally on
Saturday to protest against the TRS and its affiliated groups for not
allowing a Dalit student to speak during the "Telangana Student Self
Respect Meet" held on Friday.

The OU inspector of police, Mr B. Anjaiah, said "We have received the
petition of Dalit students who have requested for security from the
upper caste students,"

Dalit students alleged that there voices were silenced in the meet and
as they took out the rally, they were facing threats from the
TRS-affiliated student groups.

JAC member Mr Nagam Kumaraswamy, said "Visaradhan, the only Dalit
research scholar who was supposed to speak during the meet was asked
to stop his speech within four minutes. They insulted him. It is an
insult to all Dalit students. These are attempts to see that the voice
of the downtrodden is not heard in the movement. So we have sought
security from the police from TRS and associated groups."

The petition was signed by Dalit student leaders like M. Bhaskar,
Upender, Ravi and 15 others. Mr B. Sudarshan of the OU Scholars
Association said, "We were asking that the movement should be run
independently. Visaradhan was about to say on the dais that the symbol
chosen by TRS was against the feelings of Dalits. They have chosen the
symbol of Kakatiya Kalathoranam which was a victory symbolof Pratapa
Rudrudu. Why can't the symbol be of Gaddelu of Sammakka andSarakka?"

83 dalit families face boycott over mining

September 19th, 2010
DC Correspondent

Srikakulam , Sept. 18: The collector, Mr N. Srikanth, and the
superintendent of police, Mr Sanjaykumar Jain, visited the famous
Bhuddist Shrine Shalihundam, in Gaara mandal in the district, on
Saturday to take stock of the situation, where as many as 83 dalit
families faced social boycott by village elders belonging to sarpanch
G. Bhaskar Rao.

According to information, the two groups had earlier clashed over sand
mining issue, which ignited again, and the upper caste villagers of
sarpanch group, have imposed a social boycott by cutting power and
water supply to those families since Thursday night, which came to
light only on Friday. The irate villagers even tried to attack the
police who rushed to the village, and 16 persons, including the
sarpanch, were arrested in this regard.

Some dalit sanghams have complained about the matter to the State
Human Rights Commission, which directed both the collector and the SP
in a fax message on Saturday to visit the village immediately and to
send a detailed report. Mr Srikanth and Mr Sanjaykumar Jain, spoke
with the two groups and warned that severe action would be taken if
anybody tries to take law into their hands. The dalit victims told the
collector that the government had given 70 acres of land to them, and
the villagers were illegally transporting sand damaging their fertile
lands. They asked the officials to immediately stop illegal sand
mining. The collector assured that it would be done.

A police picket was also posted in the village to monitor law and
order from time to time. Later in the evening on Saturday, the revenue
divisional officer, Mr N. Satyanarayana, and the DSP , Mr Panasa
Reddy, went to the village and held a 'peace meeting' with all
villagers. The RDO asked the villagers to restore peace and to
safeguard the self respect' of dalits of the village.
