[ZESTCaste] Brave Gujarati girl - disbursement of aid(Rs.1,45,000) on May 22, 2010 in Ahmedabad

Dear donors and fiends,

I am very pleased to announce that the collected amount Rs.1,45,000 to help the brave girl from Gujarat is going to be presented to her on April 22, 2010 at 4:30PM in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

I thank immensely every donor of this worthy cause (list is given below). I thank Mr Kirit, Dr Raghu, Mr PVV Rao, and Prof Shiva Shankar for their invaluable help in organizing it. My special thanks to Mr Kirit. Without his help it would have been impossible for me to get proper and timely information. Dr Raghu helped me in many ways.

Another good news is that she got a teacher's aid job a few days ago. Though the salary is paltry, it will help her heal the wounds.

There will be no public function, media, or photos due to the sensitivity of the case. Check(s) will be handed over to her in the State Bank of India office in Ahmedabad in the presence of a few guests.

Here below I am giving you the details of the event and our appreciation letter to her. Please write to me if you have any questions.

I once again thank all generous donors who feel the pain this unfortunate girl (for no fault of hers) went through and opened up their hearts and purses. Without you we could do nothing. THANK YOU.

With regards

Ben

Letter:

My dear Ms Anjuben,

Jai Bheem and greetings from USA!

With great pleasure and confidence in you and in your abilities, I am writing this letter. This small gift from Friends for Education International is a token of our appreciation for your intelligence and courage to fight back with bravery. You are a role model to many of us in United States and you should be a role model to many in India who suffer at the hands of the powerful and keep silent fearing of the repercussions. If I have a say in bravery awards that Government of India gives every year, you will be the first one to receive.

I am confident that you are doing well in your education and English language course. I want you to use this money wisely to further yourself in education. Try not to use it for other purposes or cosmetic material. Financial problems are always there. Most of us grew with them. But, if you spend this money in education wisely, it will help you reduce many problems in future. I wish you realize your dreams of becoming a big officer and help others like you. Remember that such a position doesn't come so easily. You have study hard, acquire skills and proficiency in English, withstand competition, and show that you are better than others around you. I congratulate you on receiving job offer as school teacher.  I am confident that you are capable of achieving even bigger things, if you desire so.

Shall I give you an advice? Make Dr Ambedkar your model, guide, and philosopher. Many of us are proud to say that we derive inspiration from that intellectual giant. Remember that he faced more humiliations and discrimination in his life than anyone of us. Remember that he studied sixteen hours a day to acquire intellectual weapons to fight with his contemporaries and adversaries. He never allowed anyone to let him down. He fought courageously to gain dignity in the lives of millions of people who were treated worse than animals. Remember that he sacrificed his whole life and family, but never deviated from his mission. Remember that what we are today is due to his sacrifices. So, read his biography and his books and understand his philosophy. His life tells you what a single determined man or woman can do in his or her life time.

Though everyone can't become a Dr Ambedkar, knowing him will certainly make us purposeful, dutiful, courageous, and determined humans. If we can do a millionth of what he did, I feel, the purpose of human life will be fulfilled. So, I stress again, study Dr Ambedkar. Then, none needs to tell you about your civic duties.

I encourage you to share with us your achievements from time to time. I am just an email away from you. You are also welcome to write to us if you need any guidance in education. Our organization has many intellectuals – professors, engineers, IT people etc. We will guide you to the best of our ability. We wish to see you in big position. We wish you have a good life. We wish you help many people in future. So, we will be happy to receive any communication from you.

At the end, let me thank all donors who came forward to help you. Without their generous contributions, we couldn't have presented this small gift. Ofcourse, it is not a charity. You earned it due to your bravery and courage. What we expect from you is just an occasional email informing us how you are doing.

Let me also thank Mr Kirit, Dr Raghu, and Mr Rao who worked so hard to give us logistical support to help you.

Finally, it is our honor to help you. We wish you great success in life. Please be in touch.

With warm regards,

Benjamin Paul Kaila

An educated man without character and humility was more dangerous than a beast. If his education was detrimental to the welfare of poor, he was a curse to society.

[ZESTCaste] Physically-challenged Dalit girl burnt alive in Haryana

Physically-challenged Dalit girl burnt alive in Haryana
PTI, Apr 21, 2010, 06.47pm IST

CHANDIGARH: A physically challenged girl was burnt alive and her
father received serious burn injuries when some persons set afire
houses belonging to dalits in a village in Haryana's Hisar district on
Wednesday.

Eighteen-year-old Suman was charred to death while her father Tara
Chand, 70, suffered 90 per cent burns, official sources said adding
the incident happened in Mirchpur village.

Members of a particular community raided the village and set afire
some 12 to 15 dalit houses, they said.

Old enmity between the two communities coupled with flaring up of the
tension in the past few days led to today's incident, the sources
said.

A few days back, some members of a community allegedly passed some
objectionable remarks on dalit women.

This provoked retaliation from the dalits who roughed up some youths
of the rival community, villagers said.

A physically challenged girl was burnt alive when some persons set on
fire dalit houses, Hisar Deputy Commissioner O P Sheron told PTI by
telephone.

Asked how many houses were torched, he said "we are yet to get full details."

He said a case under various sections of the IPC had been registered
against some persons and promised strict action against the guilty.

A large posse of policemen were deployed in the village where tension ran high.

Cong MP attacks Maya for erecting own statues in UP

Updated on Wednesday, April 21, 2010, 18:02 IST

New Delhi: A Congress member in the Lok Sabha today took a dig at
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, saying while she was busy
erecting her own statues, symbols of dalit icons B R Ambedkar and Sant
Ravi Dass were being destroyed in the state.

Panna Lal Punia (Congress), who had served as Principal Secretary to
Mayawati in her previous term, said that hands of statues of Ambedkar
and Ravi Dass in Baltarganj area of Basti district were chopped off by
some anti-social elements on April 18.

He said during the Zero Hour that the incident had angered locals and
they planned to stage a road-blockade agitation but were assured by
the state administration that the guilty would be punished.

"Sadly, no case has been registered yet nor has anybody been
arrested," said Punia.

He said it was alleged that police was not taking any action because
of pressure from some quarters.

Earlier also a statue of Ambedkar was broken in Gorakhpur on February
28 but there was no action till now in that case also, he said.

"Ambedkar and Sant Ravi Dass were not only the Dalit messiah but were
revolutionary leaders for the entire society. It is the responsibility
of the state administration and entire society to ensure that due
respect is given to them," Punia said.

The Congress member said these developments were taking place in a
state having a Dalit as Chief Minister.

"It is not enough to put up your own statues, icons of Dalit society
should also be respected," he said amid thumping of desks by Congress
members in an obvious reference to Mayawati who is on a spree of
erecting her own statues in the state.

He said the Centre should direct the Mayawati government to ensure
protection of statues of Dalit icons.

Mangni Lal Mandal (JD-U) associated with Punia.

Congress slights Dr. Ambedkar again

Dr. Ambedkar was the Dalit leader nurtured and brought into politics
by Qauid e Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah. Dr. Ambedkar joined the Indian
National Congress, but was unable to convince Mohandas Gandhi about
abolishment of Unapproachability. He died a broken man saying that his
biggest blunder was giving in to Gandhi's fake fast–Ambedkar retreated
from his demand for separate electorate for the Dalits, even after the
British had approved the measure. As a result of his blunder the 450
million Dalits, Untouchables, Scheduled classes, and Tribals today
remain enslaved.

The BSP on Tuesday slammed the Congress for omitting Bhimrao
Ambedkar's contribution in a booklet issued to commemorate its 125
years, saying the party's "anti-dalit mentality" and "fake love" for
the community have been exposed.

"There is no mention of the contributions made by Dr Ambedkar, dalit
leader Babu Jagjeevan Ram and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in the booklet
released by Congress on completing 125 years of its foundation," BSP
state president Swami Prasad Maurya said in a statement issued here.

"This booklet has exposed Congress' fake love for dalits….
Surprisingly this book was released on the birth anniversary of Dr
Ambedkar," he added.

Maurya alleged that as a part of a conspiracy the party had showered
praise on one family and there was no mention of any other leader
belonging to dalit or minority communities.

"If the party forgets to publish the name of Dr Ambedkar considered as
a messiah by crores of people in the country, then it is proved that
Congress love for dalits is nothing more than a farce," he alleged.

Terming Congress' 'chetna yatra' launched by Rahul Gandhi on April 14
in BSP's stronghold as a "drama", the BSP state president said that
the party was indulging in such activities only to mislead dalits.

"Only handful people are participating in this yatra and in
desperation party leaders are using all methods to attract crowd. This
is evident from the fact that an indecent dance programme was
organised in Bulandshahr yesterday," Maurya alleged.

He accused AICC general secretary Rahul of hurting the feelings of
crores of followers of Ambedkar by not using the 'parmapujya' (most
revered) to show respect to the leader during the Ambedkar Nagar
visit.

"Omission of contributions made by the dalit and minority leaders in
the booklet is not a mistake, but a deliberate act as a part of the
conspiracy," he alleged.

He alleged that the Congress always "used" Jagjeevan Ram and never
gave him the respect he deserved. Indian Express.

At a Depressed Classes Conference on August 8, 1930 Ambedkar outlined
his political vision, insisting that the safety of the Depressed
Classes hinged on their being independent of the Government and the
Congress both: We must shape our course ourselves and by ourselves…
Political power cannot be a panacea for the ills of the Depressed
Classes. Their salvation lies in their social elevation. They must
cleanse their evil habits. They must improve their bad ways of
living…. They must be educated…. There is a great necessity to disturb
their pathetic contentment and to instill into them that divine
discontent which is the spring of all elevation. It is high time
dalits come out of the clutches of the political bosses and organize
themselves. Reservations certainly helped these communities and with
the educational background they should be able to chart their own
course for development as envisaged by the great Dr.Ambedkar.

The reservations granted in the constitution to the SCs and STs at the
behest of Dr.Ambedkar too was used by Congress to political advantage
and building vote banks. Advent of parties like BSP, RJD, SP etc.,
with the same agenda put congress on the defensive. Hence the drama
being played by Rahul and company unfolded. Parties like BSP too,
instead of bothering about welfare of downtrodden fell victim to
idolizing their leaders. The recent incidents of Mayawathi`s antics
with idols and garlands proof. By simply mentioning the name of
Dr.Ambedkar in a commemorative book is not going to help improve the
lot of dalits. All the parties that are vying with each other to
project themselves as Messiahs of the dalits will do well to
understand the vision of Dr.Ambedkar for the erstwhile untouchables

The omission might have been intentional. Congress never had a high
opinion about Dr.Ambedkar. Gandhi and Dr.Ambedkar did not see eye to
eye on many issues. Even on matters like untouchability the two had
serious differences. Gandhiji calling Dalits as `Harijans` was
severely criticized by Dr.Ambedkar. During the second round table
conference in 1931 Dr.Ambedkar strongly advocated separate electorates
to the Dalits. This was fiercely opposed by Gandhi. When finally this
was granted by the British Gandhi went on fast unto death forcing
Ambedkar to backtrack fearing attacks on the dalits by caste Hindus
that are economically powerful.Ambedkar was a severe critic of the
Salt Satyagraha undertaken by Gandhi. He was critical of the Congress
and the upper caste leaders therein. If Congress had so much love for
the downtrodden it would have given Ambedkar post of Prime Minister or
Deputy instead of a constitutional post of the Chairman of the
constitution committee was given.Chandramohanrao

[ZESTCaste] ‘Dismiss Narendra Modi over Dalit atrocities’

'Dismiss Narendra Modi over Dalit atrocities'

Agencies Posted online: Friday , Apr 16, 2010 at 1618 hrs
Ahmedabad : Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) today demanded dismissal of the
Narendra Modi Government for failing to protect Dalits in Gujarat,
where some Scheduled Caste members were "thrown out of their own
village".
"When we got the reports that 145 Dalit families were treated as
outcast and thrown out of their own village in Gujarat, we could not
believe that such kind of incident was possible in Mahatma Gandhi's
land," LJP President Ram Vilas Paswan said while talking to
mediapersons here.

"But when we went to Vanthal village in Viramgam taluka of Ahmedabad,
we were surprised. There were locks on all Dalit homes," he said.

"We will be to meeting the President on this issue and also request
the Union Government to interfere in the matter."

"The Modi Government had been anti-minority, and now it has also
started opposing the Dalits," the former Union Minister alleged.

Looking at the non-response of the BJP Government towards
discrimination against Dalits in the state, the Centre should take
appropriate action and dismiss it, Paswan said.

The prominent Dalit leader said he met Gujarat Governor Kamla, who was
also surprised to hear about the incident.

[ZESTCaste] Nautch girls catch Cong on the wrong foot

http://www.tribuneindia.com/2010/20100421/main7.htm

Nautch girls catch Cong on the wrong foot
Shahira Naim
Tribune News Service

Lucknow, April 20
A booklet and a group of nautch girls have forced Congress leaders in
the state to look for cover. The two have unwittingly provided Bahujan
Samaj Party, smarting after the rousing Congress rally at Ambedkar
Nagar last week, an opportunity to get even.

The eight-page booklet was distributed on April 14 when Rahul Gandhi
flagged off ten 'Chetna Yatras', ostensibly to mobilise the masses and
Congress workers. The venue and the date were carefully chosen as it
was not only the birth anniversary of Baba Bhim Rao Ambedkar but also
the constituency which had elected Mayawati thrice to the Lok Sabha.

But while Rahul Gandhi stole the show last week, the BSP has now hit
back and pointed out that the eight-page booklet released on the
occasion does not make any mention of Dr Ambedkar.

"This is precisely what the Chief Minister Ms Mayawati meant when she
said that Congress had always ignored Dr Ambedkar and other dalit
leaders. Why, the booklet does not mention even Jagjivan Ram, the
other dalit icon of the Congress," says BSP state president Swami
Prasad Maurya.

The booklet devotes four lines to Lal Bahadur Shashtri and eight lines
to Dr Manmohan Singh as Finance Minister. But it has given one and a
half pages to Mahatma Gandhi, one and a half pages to Indira Gandhi
and Rajiv Gandhi besides one and a half pages more to Sonia Gandhi and
the Congress in the 21st century.

Party leaders are also squirming at reports that at another rally in
Bulandshahr on Sunday, to remind people of the 'glorious' 125 years of
the Congress, people were given a lesson in anatomy rather than
history.

The assembled gathering was entertained for over three hours not by
patriotic numbers but by nautch girls gyrating to raunchy numbers with
cutouts of a host of Congress leaders providing the backdrop. By the
time AICC General Secretary Pervez Hashmi and Mathura MLA Pradeep
Mathur arrived on the scene, three hours behind schedule, most of the
people had apparently left after the entertainment programme.

Congress leaders, red in the face, spluttered that an inquiry had been
ordered into the Bulandshahr incident. As for the booklet, the
omissions, though glaring, were 'unintentional', said the UP Congress
spokesperson Subodh Srivastava.

They had glossed over the absence of any photograph of Dr Ambedkar in
Congress posters by claiming that they were not 'official'. But in the
mine-field of UP politics, posters, a booklet and even nautch girls
threaten to upset political calculations.

stand on the finance bill that will come up during the ongoing session
of Parliament.

"We will decide later," Satish Chandra Mishra, BSP general secretary
and a close aide of party chief and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister
Mayawati, told IANS when asked if it would move a cut motion alongwith
other Opposition parties seeking roll back of the fuel and fertiliser
price hike.

The BSP has 21 MPs in the Lok Sabha.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Left have already announced
that they would bring cut motions.

On April 12, the BSP had stayed away from a meeting of 13 opposition
parties, held here to chalk out a strategy of a cut motion in the Lok
Sabha.

The BSP refused to attend the meeting as Mayawati's arch-rival Mulayam
Singh Yadav was also invited.

Sources in the government said the finance bill is likely to be taken
up April 27, the day the non-BJP opposition parties have called for a
nationwide shutdown against the price rise.

In a bid to ensure that the bill is passed without any hitch, the
Congress has issued a whip asking all its MPs to be present for seven
days of the Lok Sabha proceedings starting April 20.

When the budget proposals are presented before parliament for
approval, an MP can question a budgetary allocation in the form of a
cut motion. If that is implemented, it amounts to a vote of no
confidence in the government.

[ZESTCaste] Because Ambedkar sells in the vote bazaar

http://blogs.hindustantimes.com/hindi-heartland/2010/04/20/because-ambedkar-sells-in-the-vote-bazaar/

Because Ambedkar sells in the vote bazaar

I repeat here what you all must have heard or read umpteen times.
Caste and caste alone sells in Indian politics. Or else why do
political parties scramble for political space on Ambedkar Jayanti
while keeping Gandhi Jayanti a low-key affair?

Sadly, the Father of the Nation does not fetch votes in the vote
bazaar as Ambedkar does.

Come Ambedkar Jayanti and all parties get into an overdrive –
processions, speeches, garlands. People vote for Ambedkar, they
identify with him, his caste, not with Gandhi.

Circa 2008: Union Minister Sharad Pawar unveiled a 17ft-tall statue of
Ambedkar in Nagpur. A few kilometers away in the infamous Khairlanji
village where fellow villagers had butchered four Dalits in September
2006 people celebrated a weeklong Bhagwat Saptah to mark the return of
social harmony in the village.

The irony was that the only surviving dalit family remained within the
four walls of their home during the week. Despite round-the-clock
police vigil since the incident, the family members of Durwasji
Khobragade lived an isolated and insecure life.

Few perhaps remember that the incident had sparked off caste clashes
in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.

The statue that Sharad Pawar unveiled did not give them any sense of
security or dignity.

Come to 2010. Both the Congress and the BSP vied with each other for
the Dalit pie. Rahul Gandhi went to Ambedkar Nagar, flagged off ten
yatras that would tour all the 403 assembly constituencies in the
state for full 90 days.

The ruling BSP, that claims to enjoy Ambedkar's legacy, refused
permission to Rahul to garland his statue. So he garlanded his
portrait.

By now the yatra has already got stuck in controversies with nautch
girls taking the centrestage at some places, throwing the party's
dalit agenda into the backyards.

Mayawati also roared, refusing to get cowed down by opposition's
propaganda against the memorials and parks built by her. She also went
down accusing the Congress of denying Bharat Ratna to Ambedkar till
the 1990's. The message was clear; "Ambedkar got his rightful place
only after the BSP's emergence on the state's political horizon."
Thus, the BSP is the only party in the state that could safeguard the
interest of his followers too.

Thereafter, Mayawati went on an aerial survey of the celebrations
while her constituency of dalits fought for basics like water and
power on the ground.

The Congress exploited them, showed them dreams—- the same dreams
Mayawati is showing them today.

I wonder who will be the next!
