[ZESTCaste] what is the long term vision of this e group

It is quite apparent that this e group is working towards a casteless society, and to me that this is one of the important need of the hour as far as India goes. I have seen Vietnam progressing much faster without caste, as well as china (though without democracy)

How do we address other equity issues within such a society- patriarchy, class, religion etc. I feel that controlling women's bodies is essential to caste system. but breaking the caste system may not totally address patriarhcy

What is the broader paradigm of development? Do we want a casteless society within a global capitalist and imperialist model or do we want to challenge the paradigm of development?

If the latter, what should be our debates. The neo liberal paradigm and neo imperialism may leave no human beings left! We need non party political formations for that with perhaps dalits and adviasis taking the lead.

[ZESTCaste] CII boost for affirmative action

http://www.hindustantimes.com/CII-boost-for-affirmative-action/Article1-696354.aspx

CII boost for affirmative action
HT Correspondent, Hindustan Times
Mumbai, May 11, 2011

Amid talks that the Centre is mulling job reservation for
underprivileged sections in the private sector, the industry lobby
Confederation of Indian Industry has a set a voluntary affirmative
action target for its member companies, of employing 50,000 scheduled
cast and scheduled tribe people i
n 2011-12.

Another 50,000 people from these sections will be given skill
development training, CII president said B Muthuraman said here on
Wednesday.

Working in tandem with the Dalit Chamber of India, CII member
companies will also increase procurement from SC/ST entreprenuers to
15-20% during the year. A website detailing CII members' affirmative
action initiatives will be set up soon, he said.

The industry body plans to submit to the government a review of its
affirmative action efforts each quarter. "Our position on affirmative
action is that anything that is forced upon anyone will not work,"
Muthuraman said. "But companies should feel the need to employ people
from weaker sections of the society. The industry realises that if
this (affirmative action) is not done it can impede growth."

He said the CII would create four new skill development hubs and set
up 30 new district level 'gurukuls' (skill development centres). He
also said a CII task force chaired by Adi Godrej, president designate,
CII will spearhead efforts to develop a code of conduct on integrity
and transparency in governance.

[ZESTCaste] Industry moves to duck enforced job reservation

http://businesstoday.intoday.in/story/cii-member-firms-to-employ-50000-from-among-sc-sts/1/15500.html

Industry moves to duck enforced job reservation
Lalatendu Mishra Mumbai May 12, 2011

Corporates have come forward to voluntarily provide jobs to members of
the Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes (SC/STs) in a preemptive move
to deal with the demand for job reservation in the private sector.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), the apex body of Indian
private companies, has chalked out a roadmap to provide job-oriented
training to 50,000 people from the SC/ST category this year and
arrange employment for them in different categories this year itself.

The CII has asked all member companies to take this up on a priority
basis. CII will provide training to the people at different centres in
India. The companies will directly recruit them and a CII team would
monitor this on a continuous basis.

This is a marked change as CII has been acting as a lobbyist for the
corporate sector for over 115 years. In the past five years, the focus
is changing to improving the quality of life of the community as a
whole. The voluntary job offer for the disadvantaged is in line with
this. "This year we have decided to intensify efforts on affirmative
action by our member companies, which includes providing 50,000 jobs
to members of the SC/STs. The other two focus areas are skill
development and corporate governance," said B. Muthuraman, president,
CII.

"Affirmative action is fundamentally important. Next year more people
from the SC/ST category will be employed. This is purely voluntary in
nature," he added. The industry body has also asked members to
increase the purchase of goods and services from SC/ST-owned
enterprises by 10 to 20 per cent and help them enhance
competitiveness. The Dalit Chamber of Commerce & Industry will
recommend member companies in this regard. CII has also decided to
double the number of scholarships to 1,000 for SC/ST students this
year.

Dalit leaders have been pushing for a job quota in the private sector
on the lines of government jobs and even the prime minister has
mentioned this to the discomfort of the private sector.

Former commerce minister Kamal Nath had also asked corporates to take
voluntary action on this front, failing which the Centre would bring
out legislation to make job quotas possible. It is perhaps after this
that the industry has been taking steps to prevent any forced measure.

Meanwhile, for the benefit of the other sections of society, industry
plans to set up 30 skill centres at district levels to train youth for
jobs. Training in services-related jobs, apart from manufacturing,
would also be provided.

This is to further strengthen CII's maiden Skill Development Hub in
Chhindwara, MP. Four more such hubs would be set up in four regions of
the country. It is estimated that 10 million people would join the
workforce every year and it is the responsibility of the industry to
enhance their productivity and improve their skills.

[ZESTCaste] CII's inclusive growth plan to co-opt social sector

http://www.thehindubusinessline.com/industry-and-economy/economy/article2009610.ece?homepage=true

CII's inclusive growth plan to co-opt social sector
Our Bureau

Skill development, governance will be thrust areas
Mumbai, May 11:

Inclusive growth seems to be on top of the mind when corporates come
together. The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) will this year
focus on the social sector by giving them more jobs, procuring more
from their businesses as well as imparting skills to the backward
communities.

Speaking at a media briefing after the meeting with the CII Western
Region, Mr B Muthuraman, President of CII, said that affirmative
action, skill development and governance will be the key focus areas
of the industry chamber's work in 2011-12.

"In affirmative action, our chamber members will voluntarily look to
hire 50,000 people from scheduled caste/scheduled tribe (SC/ST)
communities. Member companies will also increase procurement from
SC/ST entrepreneurs by 20-30 per cent. For this, we are working with
the Dalit Chamber of India which will provide us the list of reliable
entrepreneurs," said Mr Muthuraman.
Skill development hubs

He added that 50,000 SC/ST youth will also be trained during the year
through CII's skill development initiatives. The CII President also
announced creation of four new CII Skill Development Hubs and setting
up of 30 new district level skill Gurukuls that are Skills Development
Centres of which five will be in Western Region.

"The gurukuls will have a capacity to train 100-300 people per quarter
and initially, they will be given training in the manufacturing
sector," said Mr Chandrajit Banerjee, Director-General of CII.
Better governance

Commenting on the need for transparency and governance, Mr Muthuraman
said that for an inclusive development model, the quality of
governance must be improved. "Simplification of rules and procedures
for transparent operations, carrying out police and judicial and
electoral financing reforms are necessary for improving governance,"
he said.

Mr Muthuraman said the CII would develop a code of conduct on
integrity and transparency and encourage its members to adopt the
code. In addition, he also mentioned that a CII task force on
integrity and transparency in governance, chaired by Mr Adi Godrej,
President-Designate, CII, would spearhead CII's and industry efforts
in this area.
