[ZESTCaste] Legal rights awareness camps for Dalits

http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/article940144.ece

NEW DELHI, December 9, 2010

Legal rights awareness camps for Dalits
Special Correspondent

In a bid to re-target and empower the Dalit population — especially in
States like Uttar Pradesh, which is bound for Assembly elections in
2012 — the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, under its new
chairman P.L. Punia, has decided to organise camps to apprise Dalits
of their legal rights.

According to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, these
awareness camps will be held in all divisions and mandals of all
States and Union Territories to disseminate information about the
rights and safeguards provided in the Constitution of India for the
Scheduled Caste population.

The Commission feels that unless the intended beneficiaries are made
aware of various government schemes and programmes, they will not be
able to enjoy their rights.

Constitutional rights include reservation in government services in
Group A, B, C & D, and human rights protection by way of the SC/ST
(Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, and the PCR Act, 1955, with
provisions for compensation.

[ZESTCaste] Acharya Dismisses Ritual As 'Innocuous'

Acharya Dismisses Ritual As 'Innocuous'

TNN, Dec 9, 2010, 12.06am IST

MANGALORE: While endowment minister V S Acharya termed the practice of
`Made Snana' at Kukke Subrahmanya temple as "innocuous'', the temple
administrator will seek directions from the endowment commissioner on
the continuation of the practice -- which is neither endorsed by the
temple nor the state.

`Made Snana' is a practice of people rolling on plantain leaves used
by Brahmins for meals, under the belief that it will cure them of skin
ailments. The devout perform this on special occasions, like the
annual shashthi inside the temple premises (horangana). This year, the
three-day annual fair starts on Thursday.

Acharya told The Times of India that the practice was a matter of
belief. "Those who believe (in the practice) can take part in it and
those who don't can stay away. Nobody can question the belief part,"
he said. When compared to other beliefs to subjugate people of the
lower castes, Acharya retorted, "Even a sashtanga namaskara
(prostrating in reverence) may be objected to by some. No harm is
caused to anybody by 'Made Snana'. It's innocuous,'' he added.

Puttur assistant commissioner Harish Kumar says the age-old practice,
rooted in religious belief, has a lot of sentiment attached to it. "It
is a sensitive issue and cannot be dealt with by law all in a day.
Neither the temple nor the administration endorses this (practice).
There is no service charge for this seva, nor is it listed. People do
it out of their own belief. Educating the devout is the only way out,"
he said. Kumar said Dalit leaders had called him to start the process
of creating awareness so that the practice can be stopped in a few
years' time.

The AC will now write to endowment commissioner B G Nandakumar,
gathering people's opinion (both for and against) seeking directions
on how to go about it. Interestingly, the educated too offer this
`seva' without any qualms.

The reference to this practice is found even in Skanda Purana for
ridding ailments associated with `naga dosha' like leprosy and other
skin diseases believed to be the curse of the serpent god. The temple,
which is a favourite with scores of celebrities, shot to fame after
Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar paid a visit in 2006 for his naga
dosha.

[ZESTCaste] SC transfers Dalit case from Haryana to Delhi

http://news.in.msn.com/national/article.aspx?cp-documentid=4674293

08/12/2010
SC transfers Dalit case from Haryana to Delhi

New Delhi, Dec 8 (PTI) The Supreme Court today transferred to a
special designated court in Delhi, the trial relating to mayhem
against dalits by upper caste Hindus in Haryana''s Hisar district in
April this year to ensure a free and fair trial.

A bench of justices G S Singhvi and A K Ganguly ordered the transfer
"to ensure that the trial is free from any fear or pressure from any
quater".

The apex court asked the Additional Session Judge (ASG), Hisar, who is
presently handling the case, to transfer all relevant records to the
Additional Sessions Judge, Rohini dealing with offences under SC/ST
(Prevention of Atrocities Act), 1989.

The bench said that the Special court at Rohini would be free to
re-examine the witnesses already examined by the ASG Hisar.

The apex court passed the order after examining the affidavits filed
by two court-appointed advocates, who had submitted that the witnesses
were under constant threat and fear due to the hostile atmosphere
created by the accused and their families.

[ZESTCaste] A window to the Dalit community

http://www.hindu.com/2010/12/04/stories/2010120452770200.htm

Kerala

A window to the Dalit community

Not many visiting the ongoing International Book Festival at the
Ernakulathappan Ground in Kochi would realise that the 21-year-old
guiding them from the committee office is a budding writer in her own
right.

Dalitharude Jeevitham Oravalokanam (A look into the life of Dalits)
authored by Ligy K.R. had fetched her the Dr. Ambedkar National
Fellowship Award. The book published by Kurukshetra Publications was
released in May this year.

She spent a week with the Adivasis of Wayanad to research on the
subject. "It was an enriching experience as I always wanted to know
about the Adivasi community," said Ligy.

The book split into seven chapters runs into 95 pages. It tries to
give an overview of the life of the Dalit community in the State and
the historical injustices done to them. The book remains simple but
informative.

It looks into the reasons why the Dalits were denied proper education
and revolts held to win the community their rights.

The lives of some giants who fought for the community and the rights
ensured to the Dalits in the Indian Constitution were some of the
other topics.

While it was her first published work, the first completed book was on
the topic " Vaishnava Bhakthi Paramparyam Bharatiya Kalakalil"
(Vaishnavite influence in Indian arts). It was actually an essay that
won her the first prize in the competition organised by the Guruvayur
Devaswom in 2008 that inspired her to write. She has now focused on
what she regards as the lopsided liquor policy of the State
government. She has already started writing. "Why can't the government
hike the price of liquor sold through Beverages outlets on a par or
more than what's being charged in bars and use the increased returns
from it to subsidize essential items," she asks.

She has graduated in Economics and is now pursuing an MBA degree.

Hailing from a poor family in Chengamanad near Angamaly, Ligy is
candid about her financial situation and the need to start earning a
livelihood.

Her father is a daily wage worker while her mother is bed-ridden owing
to a spinal disease.

She is realistic enough to earn a job with a steady income and to
carry on with writing alongside.

During this week, however, she will keep aside all her worries
enjoying her time with the books which she so dearly loves.

[ZESTCaste] Kalipalayam village Dalits' plea

Tamil Nadu

Kalipalayam village Dalits' plea

Staff Reporter

an appeal:Residents of Kalipalayam in front of the Tirupur
collectorate on Monday.

Tirupur: A group of Dalits from Kalipalayam village complained to the
Collector, C. Samayamoorthy, that they were not yet officially
enumerated as 'Scheduled Caste' despite them being from the community
and possesses all documents pertaining to substantiate it.

They pointed out that the discrepancy was noticed only during the
recent ward realignment process carried out in the panchayat in which
each of the total three wards were bifurcated to constitute six wards.

"The data on the government gazette released in connection with the
ward bifurcation process stated that only 59 Dalits are there in the
entire Kalaipalayam village panchayat as against the actual figures of
around 900," panchayat ward-II member K. Sundaresan said.

He said that as many as 435 Dalits figured in the electoral list
published even as early as in 1995 itself.

"In 2009 Parliamentary elections also, 479 Dalit electors from the
panchayat exercised their franchise," Mr. Sundaresan said.

[ZESTCaste] Nepal: More Dalit women victims of post-marriage violence

http://www.ekantipur.com/the-kathmandu-post/2010/12/07/nation/more-dalit-women-victims-of-post-marriage-violence/215757/

More Dalit women victims of post-marriage violence

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, DEC 07 -
Dalit women are increasingly becoming victims of different forms of
social violence after they inter into inter-caste marriages, Dalit
women said on Tuesday.

In an interaction organised by the Feminist Dalit Organisation (FEDO),
Radha Dhakal Sunar of Surkhet said she had a love marriage with Bimal
Rana Magar in 2006. Her mother-in-law kicked her and her husband out
of the house after seven days of their marriage. They didn't have
shelter and food, she narrated.

Subsequently, her husband went to India to look for jobs. However, as
he was uneducated and unskilled, her husband's hands don't work now
after he got an electric shock while working in India.

Currently, Sunar is in Kathmandu while her husband is in India.
Sunar's husband had asked his brother to take Sunar to India. However,
the brother has not accepted Sunar as his sister-in-law and refused to
obey his brother.

"What can I do in such a situation?" Sunar, who has two children, said.

Other Dalit women shared similar experiences at the programme.

Kamala Pariyar of Chitwan also had a love marriage with Shree Ram
Lamichane in 2008. As soon as they got married, Lamichane's family
members kicked the newly-wed couple out of the house saying Pariyar
belonged to an "untouchable" social group. Pariyar, her husband and
their son are now living in her maternal home.

According to Durga Sob, president of FEDO, Dalit women have become
victims of social violence after they engaged in

inter-caste marriages. They have been tortured and often kicked out of
the house.

Sob further said different laws have been formulated to promote
inter-caste marriage, but they have failed to ensure Dalit women's
rights.

"We want effective laws from the government," Sob added.

At the programme, Home Minister Bhim Bahadur Rawal committed to bring
in effective laws. "Laws are not enough to end this kind of
gender-based violence. What we need is social awareness. Women are
suffering from violence due to social stigma in the name of tradition
and social values and norms."

Give Varanasi anti-terrorism force: Mayawati

2010-12-08 12:00:00

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has demanded that the Central
Government should provide Varanasi with an anti-terrorism force
similar to the one provided to Mumbai after 26/11.

After visiting the blast site, which left a child dead over 30 others
injured, Mayawati said: We will request the Centre to provide us with
a Special Force to tackle such incidents in the future and ensure that
such incidents don't take place.

"We will request the Centre to provide us with similar security
arrangements made after 26/11 in Mumbai," she said.

She said she will write a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and
Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram in this regard.

Earlier, she presided over an emergency meeting of senior government
officials in Lucknow and sent a team of officials, besides BSP state
unit president Swami Prasad Maurya, to Varanasi.

Meanwhile, the Union Home Ministry has sounded a nationwide alert with
special stress on four major cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and
Hyderabad - in wake of the blast.

"A general alert has been sent to all state governments and they have
been asked to stay on high alert," said Union Home Secretary G K
Pillai.

"It was low intensity blast which occurred at about 6.20 pm in which
three-four people were injured. Subsequently we understand there could
have been a stampede...as a result 15-20 people were injured. So
roughly 20-25 people injured," he said.

The blast occurred at around 6:20 p.m. on Tuesday when thousands of
devotees and some foreign tourists had assembled at the Dashashwamedh
ghat for having darshan of the Ganga Arti ritual.

Terror outfit Indian Mujahideen(IM) claimed responsibility for the
blast in e-mails sent to media houses and said it "attributed" the
attack to the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992. (ANI)

[ZESTCaste] Fwd: Caste still a reality

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Vidya Bhushan Rawat <vbrawat@gmail.com>
Date: Thu, Nov 25, 2010 at 3:00 PM
Subject: Caste still a reality
To:

Understanding Bihar's verdict

By Vidya Bhushan Rawat

Bihar polls have brought 'smile' to many faces on our TV channels. As
Nitish Kumar romp through a landslide victory along with his ally in
the NDA, the media started writing obituary of Lalu Yadav as well as
Ram Vilas Paswan. I still remember a statement from George Fernandez
not to make mistake of writing obituary of political leaders unless
they are buried or cremated as they can always bounce back. There is
no scientific methodology for people to vote. A middle class hero Man
Mohan Singh could be defeated easily from a constituency like South
Delhi which is considered to be 'educated and well off'. Hence it is
too much if we think that caste has been eliminated from the minds of
people in Bihar in particular and India in general since our TV
'experts' wants us to believe so without changing their own caste
mind.

Yes, Bihar's results need more analysis and in-depth reading. Did Lalu
and Ram Vilas's arrogance hurt the voters? Did they take their voters
for granted? Is corruption not an issue with the Dalit Bahujan
communities? I think one will have to analyse the whole issue. Has
Mandal failed or the forces of social justice let down the Mandal
revolution in India with their continuously opportunistic and unholy
alliances with the caste forces?

Coincidently, when Bihar's Nitish Kumar government assumes office for
second term, a new scenario has emerged for the forces of Social
Justice which need to be understood. And it is post modern Mandalism
now with most backward communities challenging the status quo and
asking for the accountability. That you can not rule over them in the
name of Dalit and backward without providing a space for them in the
governance structure. If the political class in the name of social
justice does not come out of the family business, they will be wiped
out as happened in Bihar. The forces of social justice can not have
Gandhi family as their idol.

However, these polls also show the inadequacy of political system
where a party just getting 39% of the popular votes has got nearly 89%
seats in the assembly. Most of the media termed that Bihar has now got
rid of caste identities but the fact is that the Maha Dalits and most
backward castes are seeking their space and Nitish Kumar should not
feel that he can put the upper caste agenda on Bihar to term it as a
'casteless' state. How many of them are ready to leave their caste
interest aside and speak for a casteless society. Will the forces of
Hindutva work for a casteless society? If yes then the annihilation of
caste is annihilation of Brahmanism in India which is not really the
agenda of Nitish Kumar and his allies.

Nitish Kumar failed in implementing the Bandhopadhyay Commission
report on land redistribution. Just a few days before the election
results we saw violence against Dalits by powerful Bhumihar community
which seemed to enjoy Nitish Kumar's rule in Bihar. The violence by
Bhumihars on the Dalits was because of the land issue in Pathua
village of district Lakhisarai in which about 900 bighas of land
declared surplus under Ceiling Act was being encroached by the goons
of a particular Bhumihar leader as they wanted to uproot the Dalits
and most backward communities living on the said land. Land will
remain one of the most contentious issue and if Nitish Kumar in the
din of the euphoria created by corporate media ignore this issue then
he will meet the same fate as Lalu and Ram Vilas Paswan have met with.
That the most backward communities and Dalits have signaled to Bihar
politicians which largely revolved around powerful OBCs, Bhumihars,
Brahmin, Kayasthas and Rajputs that they too are an important segment
of state. The Pasmanda Muslims also joined hand with these forces and
hence the expectations are high. However, an attempt is being made to
convert the entire verdict into so-called developmental frame work.
While it is true that people want accountability from their leaders
and they want participation in power. They will not be satisfied with
the rhetoric of development. We all know Bihar remain peaceful during
the past few years as no displacement took place because of so-called
industrialization as it did not happen. The first phase of Nitish's
rule was basically roads, electricity and water but big companies are
eyeing Bihar now. Nitish Kumar should be careful enough to understand
that he can not take away people's land in the name of development. An
image is being created for Nitish Kumar as if he is the replica of
Naveen Patnayak of Orissa. Nitish should be careful enough in dealing
people's issues s Bihar is definitely not Orissa and any such
displacement of people will come to haunt him and decimate him for
ever. We know the media is very happy with 'merit' winning in Bihar
because they want to push their own agenda and get land for a few
corporate houses.

As Nitish takes over the reins of tomorrow, he would probably remember
his colleague and senior leader V P Singh's effort for probity in
public life. It is important to understand the importance of VP Singh
today and how Nitish could further that agenda of Mandal. The result
in Bihar are not end of Mandal politics but as VP Singh often remarked
that the Mandal forces have to capture the opposition space also. It
is important for the forces of social justice to be free from
corruption and family business. Nitish Kumar could do it. Bihar's
voter was very clear this time when they defeated all the major
Bahubalis and those who thought politics as family domain. In the
realm of social justice politics there are very few who did not leave
behind any family legacy for the others.

We know it very well that the corporate run media is hell bent to undo
the historical change of the post Mandal era. They do it with all
their might. Using every thing under their belt to scuttle all the
voices of social justice. It is not for the unknown reasons that
V.P.Singh still remains one of the most hated politicians of the
country. Lalu and Ramvilas must understand. Nitish and Sharad may
understand it even when they are being glorified by the same upper
caste media which villainised them in 1990. Is not it a fact that
Sharad Yadav and

Ram Vilas Paswan were two most hated face along with V P Singh during
those tumultuous years that India faced just because a government
dutifully promised to implement the Mandal Commission Report.

It is time to revisit that. It is time for introspection. The
political forces of social justice actually betrayed themselves. The
issue of corruption may not look important to all those ideologues who
are in a comparative mode but it affects the common people. It does
not matter whether the corruption involve Karunanidhi, Lalu Yadav or
Rajiv Gandhi. It simply means loss of generation for poor in India. It
means denial of their right and basic facilities. And people today are
judging their political leaders. They understand that the political
class is corrupted by the power politics and that is why Lalu and
Rabri might not have thought that she will face such humiliating
defeat in her own den where Yadavas called the shot. The verdict is
clear that you can not take your own community for granted. May be
they could have learnt a few lesson from Kanshi Ram who had no family
to place over the people. He created a Mayawati and a committed cadre
in BAMSEF and among various Dalit communities and people accepted her
wholeheartedly. Ofcourse, Mayawati too, should take a few lessons from
Bihar verdict even when Bihar and Uttar-Pradesh are quite contrast yet
none should take their own community as for granted. Mayawati will
have to work for Sarvjan but not at the cost of the Dalits in
Uttar-Pradesh otherwise the most loyal voter will ditch her. There is
a limit to the people's patience. That is one big lesson we get from
the defeat of close relatives of both Ram Vilas Paswan as well as Lalu
Yadav. One can not term mere representation of one's family as the
'voice' of people. You will have to go beyond slogans and create a
movement. People are not going to believe in your hollow secularism
unless you launch an anti caste struggle. Unfortunately, anti caste
movement was never on the agenda of those who claimed the legacy of
social justice movement in India. Yes, we need people with clean image
and clear ideology to fight against the brahmanical forces who are
basking over the glory of Bihar's rejection to 'caste'. One hope
Nitish Kumar understand that caste is the real cause of poverty in
Bihar as well as in India. Mushahars, Dushadhs, Nishads, Chamars, Doms
are not poor because of their class only but because they were born in
these particular communities. So, he will have to reach them. He
formed Maha Dalit to break the greater Dalit alliance and
unfortunately none noticed it but the fact is these are the time of
alliance building. Nitish's alliance is still artificial as there can
not be any alliance between the exploiters and exploited. Nitish
Kumar's upper caste vote bank will still not want that land reform be
implemented and land be redistributed to poor. That Lalu too does not
want.

It is important to break the myth of Bihar's revolution. Bihar
actually has little to offer to Dalits as the politics here is very
much a domain game of powerful upper castes verses neo powerful OBCs.
Dalits and Muslims are just an annexure to their broader agenda. It's
similar to what is happening in Tamilnadu in the name of social
justice. It is actually the biggest failure of Ramvilas Paswan and
Lalu Yadav as they failed to reach the poorest Dalit and economically
backward communities who were feeling marginalized and left out.
Nitish Kumar carefully cultivated them along with Muslims and
succeeded. Those pretending to lead anti caste forces must unite all
such forces victim of caste forces in Bihar in complete harmony and
not mere followers of a few individuals and their families.

As a Dalit autobiography, it naturally transcends the personal
narrative of the author's life story and seamlessly entwines with that
of Dalits following their legendary leader Babasaheb Ambedkar, with
whom Nimgade had a long acquaintance

Dalit autobiography is essentially a new genre of literature created
by the first generation of Dalits in the turbulent times of the late
1960s, when they had begun to come out of universities with a rolled
up degree in their hand and a blank wall as their future.

Within a decade of Dr Ambedkar's demise, their movement appeared to
crumble: their leaders deserted it and joined enemy camps, their
people faced more and more atrocities, and all the constitutional
promises made to them were being made a mockery of.

Inspired by the movements of Blacks in the US, their protest found
expression in a body of work that is today read as Dalit literature.

Although writers like Baburao Bagul, Bandhu Madhav, Shankarao Kharat,
and Annabhau Sathe were already writing about the lives of Dalits,
Dalit literature acquired its unique identity only later, following
the formation of Dalit Panthers. Poems, short stories, novels and
autobiographies written by Dalit writers projected the perspective
that 'Dalit is dignified' (rather like 'Black is beautiful'),
rejecting the sub-human status imposed on them by the Hindu social
order.

Autobiography, as a matter of fact, came a decade later, after the
initial barrage of poems and short stories. Dalit writers, like the
black writers from Frederick Douglass to Malcolm X and Eldridge
Cleaver, narrated their life stories focused on the painful histories
of Dalit selfhood.

Baluta of Daya Pawar and Athavaniche Pakshi of PE Sonkamble were one
of the first autobiographies published in 1978. They created waves and
was soon followed by a spate of autobiographies during the 1980s:
Lakshman Mane's Upara (1980), Shankarrao Kharat's Taral Antaral
(1981), and Baby Kamble's Jine Amuche (1986), just to name a few.

As in the case of Black autobiographies, they immediately caught the
fancy of readers because of their bizarre and voyeuristic value.

They were soon picked up for translation into other languages,
including the foreign ones. They overtook the market for other forms,
bringing corresponding name, fame and even pecuniary benefits to their
authors.

Though these autobiographies projected the subjectivity of their
writers, they simultaneously portrayed the collective Dalit self as
well.

As Stephen Butterfield writes of African-American autobiographies,
"the self belongs to the people, and the people find a voice in the
self." Subjectivity in these autobiographies is thus complicated by
the deep connection between the individual self and the communal self.

Nimgade's book is no exception. His narrative, comic at the surface,
has a strong undercurrent of anguish and pain inflicted by the caste
system. Compared to most Dalit autobiographies written by seemingly
successful people that subtly celebrate personal achievements,
Nimgade's narrative never strays from its undertone of humility.

Yet his achievements are not small when compared with that of theirs.
After Ambedkar, he is perhaps the first Dalit to have obtained a
doctorate from an American university, and that too in physical
science. But he humbly puts it all down to inspiration from Dr
Ambedkar.

While others inspire awe in common Dalit masses by playing up their
accomplishments, Nimgade seeks to assure them that if they persevere,
they too can overcome the odds and reach their goals.

This book, therefore, can serve as a real inspiration to millions of
aspiring Dalit youth.

Thus, apart from being different from other such autobiographies,
Nimgade's narrative also contains a unique treasure in the form of his
reminiscences of Dr Ambedkar. Besides numerous references, one entire
section (out of six) of the book is devoted to Dr Ambedkar. It
provides valuable insights into the persona of the great man.

Dr Ambedkar makes several appearances in Nimgade's story, apart from
being his mentor, and eventually inspires him to mentor and help poor
students all his life.

Like all other Dalit autobiographies, this book was also originally
written in the language of the writer, Marathi, and was titled
Dhulitun Dhyeyakade (From dust to destiny). Indeed, it was an amazing
leap, for Namdeo of Sathgaon to become Dr Nimgade. Unlike other Dalits
who have penned their memoirs, Nimgade is not known to be a writer.

But with the support of his close friends and relations, he has done a
good job of it. The Marathi book was translated into Hindi by him and
his wife on public demand. This English translation, also done by him
with editorial help from others, is almost as good as the original in
its expression and readability.

It must be read not only by all those who want to understand the Dalit
universe but also by those who enjoy a good Indian book in English.

Anand Teltumbde is a writer and a civil rights activist.

Supporters welcome John Pandian out of jail

December 7th, 2010
DC Correspondent Share Buzz up!Salem, Dec. 6: Dalit leader John
Pandian stepped out of the central prison here on Monday after serving
eight years of a life term slapped in connection with the sensational
daylight slaying of Viv-ekanandan of Coimbatore in a love triangle
tragedy in 1993.
The Supreme Court had ordered his release on Friday, acquitting him
and four others for want of sufficient evidence that they had carried
out the contract killing
hired by the jilted lover of Vivekanandan's wife.
Over 5,000 members of his Tamizhaga Munnetra Kaz-hagam, a dalit
splinter group, descended at the jail since morning as news spread
that their leader would be freed. Their cars, vans and buses blocked
the Yercaud Road for over three hours and police had a tough time
regulating the crowds. Emerging from the jail, the tall and well-built
Pandian waved to the fans, garlanded an Ambedkar statue about a km
away and addressed the media before tasting the cake fed by wife
Priscilla, a
practising lawyer.
"I have been locked up for 8 long years because of conspiracy by
vengeful elements and bad judgments," Mr Pandian said, "The coming
Assembly elections will show the strength of our
Devendrakula people," adding that he would take a decision about
contesting in the elections.

[ZESTCaste] 800 workers clean up after visitors throng Shivaji Park

800 workers clean up after visitors throng Shivaji Park
HT Correspondent , Hindustan Times

Mumbai, December 08, 2010First Published: 02:01 IST(8/12/2010)

A day after Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's followers thronged his memorial at
Chaityabhoomi at Shivaji Park to mark Mahaparinirvan Din — his death
anniversary — the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) pressed
over 800 staff to clean up the area. The BMC staffers collected
garbage weighing 55 tonnes from the area over a period of two days.
This is in addition to the 10-12 tonnes of regular garbage that this
area produces on a regular day.

BMC officials said strict orders were given to workers of the solid
waste management team to begin a cleanliness drive from midnight on
Monday.

"We collected garbage from the roads, mopped the pavements and roads
and also treated the area with disinfectants," said deputy municipal
commissioner, Kishore Kshirsagar.

Arterial and the smaller internal roads were cleared of garbage and
litter by Tuesday morning.

All the temporary shelters that were erected for the followers have
been dismantled," said another official, on condition of anonymity, as
he is not authorised to speak to the media.

"The BMC has done a satisfactory job of cleaning the place. But the
facilities that the BMC provided during the event were not adequate,"
said Ashok Rawat, activist and resident of Shivaji Park.

Officials said apart from washing the roads, machines were used to clean them.

The ground was opened for sports on Tuesday afternoon.

Makeshift toilets and drinking water taps were provided along the
route to Chaityabhoomi. The BMC lifeguards and boats were also
stationed along the seafront near Shivaji Park.

[ZESTCaste] Mayawati unveils more Ambedkar parks

Mayawati unveils more Ambedkar parks
Published: Tuesday, Dec 7, 2010, 2:00 IST
By Deepak Gidwani | Place: Lucknow | Agency: DNA

Apparently emboldened by the Supreme Court's permission to the
Ambedkar Park in Noida, UP chief minister Mayawati inaugurated two new
parks dedicated to Dr BR Ambedkar on his anniversary in Lucknow on
Monday. She also inaugurated eight other projects, including a bridge
in Agra, named after Ambedkar.

The two parks are spread over an area of about 20 acres each and
together cost Rs150 crore, official sources said. The inauguration of
two more parks in the name of Ambedkar are seen as the feisty Dalit
icon's unique way of hitting back at political opponents who have
often criticised her for "wasteful" expenditure on parks, statues and
memorials dedicated to Dalit leaders.

Mayawati made full use of the opportunity at hand to justify the mega
projects dedicated to Ambedkar, Kanshi Ram and other Dalit icons.
"Memorials, museums, park, galleries, crossings and statues in the
name of great Dalit leaders like Dr BR Ambedkar would serve as an
inspiration for the coming generation," Mayawati said after
inaugurating the new projects.

The BSP chief made oblique references to the Congress without naming
it. "It is not because of the parties which have ruled the country for
a long time that the backward and deprived classes got reservation in
education and government jobs. This was an achievement of Dr BR
Ambedkar," she said.

"Dr Ambedkar made several provisions in the constitution to ensure
that Dalits get social justice and a life of dignity," she added.
