Rahul Gandhi ups ante against Mayawati
Mrigank Tiwari, TNN | Jan 22, 2012, 04.49AM IST
JARI (ALLAHABAD): Not letting his guard down in the electoral bout
against Mayawati and her party symbol 'haathi' (elephant), Congress
leader Rahul Gandhi dubbed the pachyderm as "Jaadu ka haathi jo sab
kuch kha jaata hai (a magical elephant that munches everything)" and
went on to attack Mulayam's much-touted campaign of "Ummeed ki cycle"
(Cycle of hope) which sent the crowd at Krishak Intermediate College,
Garaiyya, Jari on Saturday into peels of laughter.
Questioning the manifesto of Samajwadi Party and terming it as "a box
of empty promises", Rahul came down heavily against Mulayam Singh
Yadav for his false promises. Referring to SP poll manifesto released
on Friday, Rahul said: "If you ask SP chief to turn the sky green from
blue, he would also promise to do so."
Not running short of taking a jibe at BJP's 'India Shining' slogan,
Rahul continued with his new-found oratory style by interacting
directly with a villager his name and his views on whether India was
actually shining.
On receiving a reply in the negative, he went on to highlight the
public welfare schemes undertaken by the UPA since 2004, which include
waiving of agricultural loans, MNREGA and NRHM, even as the BSP and
BJP kept on harping as to from where the UPA government would bear the
voluminous expenditure.
Perhaps aware of the fact that how deeply caste-based politics has
made inroads into the minds of the voters, Rahul sounded a note of
disenchantment over the sorry state of affairs in UP under successive
governments of SP and BSP. "UP has not progressed and developed under
successive governments headed by SP and BSP over the last 22 years,"
he said.
Annoyed over opposition parties for branding his bonding with the poor
as 'natak' (drama), Rahul said: "Now I am going to tell you about the
biggest drama which is Right to Food Bill, which when implemented,
would ensure that no poor labourer or farmer's son remains without two
square meals. The bill would envisage compulsory food for poor
sections of the society in the form of 35kg free foodgrain every
month."
