Caste discrimination behind Sunar's killing: Report

KATHMANDU: A field study carried out by a Dalit organisation claimed
that caste-based discrimination was behind the December 10 murder of
Manbir Sunar of Kalikot.

At a programme in the Capital today, NGOs, including Dalit NGO
Federation (DNF), National Dalit Society Welfare Association and Nepal
and Dalit Service Association, among others, jointly made public the
report of their field study.

The report states that locals had thrashed Sunar to death when he
allegedly entered the kitchen of a hotel operated by a so-called
upper-caste person to light a cigarette.

The report says, hotel owner Jasa Bahadur Shahi pushed Sunar out of
the kitchen saying he had desecrated it. Later, Min Bahadur Shahi and
Deep Bahadur Shahi, who were mending the hotel roof thrashed Sunar in
the hotel yard, said the report.

Dalit organisations also charged the Shahi duo had thrashed Sunar to
death at his home.

Rubbishing the report prepared by Informal Sector Service Centre
(INSEC) and the Local Peace Committee (LPC), DNF Chairman Gajadahar
Sunar said INSEC and LPC reports were grossly false.

He further demanded compensation for Sunar's family and stern action
against the perpetrators.

INSEC and LPC reports had ruled out caste-based discrimination as the
cause behind Sunar's murder. The reports said Sunar died in a drunken
