Ambedkar's ideology lauded at national seminar
Warangal: The two-day national seminar on "Socio-Political Philosophy
of Dr. B R Ambedkar: Contemporary Social/Literary Perspectives" began
at Kakatiya University here on Friday.
The seminar was being organized by Dr B R Ambedkar Studies Centre of
Kakatiya University and was sponsored by University Grants Commission
(UGC) for the spread of Ambedkar philosophy and ideology.
Speaking after inaugurating the seminar, UGC former chairman and
Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) chairman Professor
Sukhdeo Thorat said that Ambedkar was a great philosopher, social
reformer and a visionary.
"Ambedkar struggled throughout his life for reconstruction of the
Indian society based on liberty, equality and fraternity. He was one
of the three great men, besides Mahatma Gandhi and Chinese leader Mao
Zedong who not only preached ideals but practiced them with
sincerity", he stated.
Giving a detailed account of Dr. B R Ambedkar's life, struggle and
ideology, Prof. Thorat said that Ambedkar worked for incorporating
ideals like social and economic equality in the Constitution along
with democratic socialism. The rights and privileges enjoyed by the
Dalits today were the fruits of his efforts, he noted.
Though Ambedkar differed with Gandhi, he was the only person with whom
he could communicate on the emancipation of the Dalits.
It was through Gandhi, he could get Dalit issues to the centre stage
in Congress, he revealed. Caste was an important factor which could
not be ignored in any issue related to Indian society and its
development, he said.
Presiding over the inaugural session, the University Vice-Chancellor
Prof. B Venkat Rathnam opined that Ambedkar had acquired the status of
god to the Dalits in India because of the his contribution to uplift
of their lives.
English and Foreign Languages University Prof. G Aloysius in his
keynote address, stated that for Ambedkar democracy was not different
from nationalism and he strove to create a nation based on common
brotherhood. Ambedkar's philosophy was narrowed down by many
intellectuals to suit their ideas and policies, he lamented.
The seminar director, Dr. B. Krishnaiah, presented the theme paper and
said that the KU Ambedkar Studies Centre was striving to spread the
philosophy of Ambedkar to the rural masses.
Former APPSC member Dr. T V Narayana, Dalit Sena state president J B
Raju, University of Hyderabad Professor V Krishna spoke.
