Unrelenting Jats threaten to intensify agitation
TNN | Mar 25, 2011, 04.34am IST
CHANDIGARH/LUCKNOW: Jat leaders on Thursday threatened to intensify
their agitation after a protester on hunger strike died in Haryana.
The leaders also blamed the Congress for "sabotaging" the movement.
The agitation demanding reservation in Central services and states of
Punjab, Haryana and Jammu under the OBC category has led to
cancellation of hundreds of passenger, goods and express trains
causing not only inconvenience to the people, but also resulting in
disruption of coal and grain supplies. The railways have lost hundreds
of crores of revenue.
Railway officials said the Rohtak-Panipat track remains blocked since
March 13 and the Bhiwani-Hisar section is "jammed' since March 6.
On Thursday, protesting Jats continued their agitation and blocked
railway tracks in defiance of high courts' orders in UP and Haryana.
All India Jat Arakshan Samiti (AIJAS) president Yashpal Malik said as
of now, the plan to demonstrate on roads leading to Delhi stands. "We
will agitate as per our plans," he said.
"The Congress-led Central government is trying to sabotage our
agitation," said Mallik. He said the community was studying the
Supreme Court and high courts' orders about restrictions on blocking
rail and road routes. He said the community would discuss the matter
in its panchayat and would approach the court soon.
He also said the community will "request the court to consider that
the governments do not listen to people till there is some
disturbance."
Malik and chief of Haryana wing of AIJAS Hawa Singh Sangwan reached
Mehuwala, Fatehabad, where a protester, Vijay Singh Khadwasra, died
late on Wednesday. "If the state uses force against us, we will fight
back. We will not leave the tracks till our demands are met," said
Sangwan.
