'I hate Ambedkar' page deleted from internet

MUMBAI: The webpage - I hate Ambedkar - on a popular social networking
site, which created a stir across the city last month, has been
deleted. The police, probing the case, found its origin in a foreign
country.
The defamatory page about Babasaheb Ambedkar, father of the Indian
Constitution, had created a riot-like situation in several areas in
the city. A mob went on the rampage in Bandra and Khar, following
which the police registered a case of rioting. The city crime branch
had written to the Central Emergency Response Team (CERT) in New Delhi
asking the body to block the page.
"During our investigation, we found that the page had been created on
Facebook from a foreign country. We had earlier blocked this page in
India and sent a request to the social networking website to delete it
globally," said a police officer.
"The page was recently deleted from the website's server," said the
officer. The police are, however, yet to identify the person who put
up the page. The Khar police had registered a case of creating enmity
between two communities against unidentified persons who uploaded the
page on the web site.
A few days after the page was created in February, Dr Ambedkar's
followers were alerted of its existence. The violence of the protests
took the police by surprise. "Even the top hierarchy of the city
police had no idea of the trouble that was brewing because of the
webpage," said a senior crime branch official. The police had obtained
an order from the Bandra court, scanned and e-mailed it to CERT and
Facebook asking them to block the page.
The social networking website has a 'report abuse' link for members
who wish to bring any questionable content to the management. On
clicking the link, the user is given a series of options for why he or
she wishes to report the page. One of the reasons listed is 'contains
hate speech or attacks an individual'. The I hate Ambedkar page had
created uproar on the internet, with surfers waging an online battle
on other websites as well.
