More quota for weaker section students in KVs
TNN, Feb 7, 2011, 12.03pm IST
Allahabad: One of the largest group of schools in the country, the
Kendriya Vidyalaya, have now decided to extend an increased
reservation, 25%, for students belonging to weaker section the
society. The reservation, to be given on the total numbers of seats in
class I, follows the obligation of KV Sangathan under the Right To
Education Act and would be implemented in the coming session of
2011-12 in around 850 KV schools being run in the country and abroad.
This was decided in a meeting of the Board of Governors (BOG) of KV
and has been incorporated in the new admission guidelines to be
followed by the KVs in the academic year 2011-12. Presently, KVS has a
provision for 22.5% reservation for SC/ST students (15% for SC and
7.5% for ST), i.e, nine seats out of 40 are reserved for SC/ST
students. Now, 10 seats would be reserved for SC/ST students in class
I and the class strength would be increased to 41.
Besides, children getting reservation will avail free education till
the completion of compulsory elementary education.
One set of NCERT text books would be given to each child by the
school. The school will also bear their other expenses like note
books, stationery, uniform and transport, mention the new guidelines.
KV Sangathan defines a disadvantaged child as one belonging to the
SC/ST category, socially and educationally backward class or such
other group having disadvantage owing to its social, cultural,
economical, geographical, linguistic, gender or such other factor as
may be specified by a government notification.
"This is a welcome step and would be an add on to the existing
facilities being provided to various sections of the society. After
its implementation from the coming academic session, we are sure that
children coming from this particular section would be at par with
their counterparts coming from the better section," said assistant
commissioner, KVS Lucknow Region, Ranbir Singh.
