MARGAO: The Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat, during the SC/ST
convention at Curtorim on Sunday, promised ` 5 crore to the SC
corporation and ` 1 crore specifically for the Dhangar community,
which has still not been notified as part of the ST.
"The Dangar community has not been named among STs and to ensure that
they are not neglected, the government has given them ` 1 crore," the
Chief Minister said while addressing a widely-attended ST convention
in the presence of the PWD and RDA Minister, Mr Churchill Alemao,
Panchayat Minister, Mr Manohar Azgaonkar, Quepem MLA, Mr Chandrakant
Kavlekar, Raia sarpanch, Mr Joseph Vaz and others.
Mr Kamat also said that his government had changed all land
acquisition procedures to ensure that all the "small persons" get fair
value for their lands if they were acquired by the government.
The government decision to give the affected people a better deal for
the land the government may have acquired was proof that the
government was helping the smaller people, the
Chief Minister claimed.
"This government will never allow injustice to happen to the SC/ST
community," he said.
The RDA Minister brought up the memory of Mr Floriano Vaz, who was
martyred during the Konkani agitation and also spoke about his efforts
to try and get as many Goan SC and ST into
the BPL list.
MP, Mr Shantaram Naik told the gathered that it was the Congress party
that had worked for the benefit of the community right from the time
of Indira Gandhi to Rajiv Gandhi and now to Ms Sonia Gandhi.
He also claimed that the Congress had asked for a special census and 8
seats out of 40 for the SC/ST community in the Assembly.
