TAHDCO finds jobs for SC/ST grads in private
TNN, Sep 18, 2010, 04.09am IST
CHENNAI: Thirty two unemployed SC/ST graduates were appointed as bank
officers for ICICI Bank on Friday, as part of a placement scheme
overseen by Tamil Nadu Adi Dravidar Housing and Development
Corporation (TAHDCO).
Under a special tie-up with Institute of Finance, Banking &
Insurance ( IFBI), these graduates underwent a six month training
course on banking operations and communication skills.
Said Chandrakant B. Kamble, managing director of TAHDCO, "This is the
first time we are providing jobs in the private sector. We are
altogether supporting the course costs for 100 students, amounting to
Rs 30 lakh. The course, though brief, is very exhaustive and gives
them a thorough grounding in banking, accounts, financial management
and all other matters related to banking."
Graduates in 17 districts were invited to apply for this course and
were screened using an online aptitude test and a face-to-face
interview. The 100 candidates who were shortlisted for the training
will be posted as bank officers in various branches of ICICI in Tamil
Nadu and will earn an annual salary of Rs 2,50,000. The course,
according to the candidates, was structured to help students with no
knowledge of banking. "None of the students had any background in
banking," said Arvind Ganesan, a computer science engineering graduate
from Madurai who has been posted in ICICI's Ambattur office, Chennai.
"But the way they approached the concepts made it very easy. They
conducted role-playing for us to improve our interaction skills."
Concurring with this, Dinesh Pandian, a BE graduate from Pollachi who
has been posted to the bank's Coimbatore head office added, "Most of
the faculty members had worked in the banking sector and shared their
experience with us. But best of all, they had a short but really good
communication course which greatly helped us. Many of the students,
including me, were from rural backgrounds with schooling in the Tamil
medium. This course has given me confidence to converse fluently in
English."
