Maya hails SC verdict on reservation
STAFF WRITER 21:11 HRS IST
Lucknow, May 11 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati today
welcomed the Supreme Court judgement upholding reservation for
backward classes in local bodies.
Mayawati, in a statement here, directed officials to strictly follow
the prevailing reservation facility in view of the apex court's
verdict.
Lashing out at the Congress, she said it was because of its passive
attitude that the backwards were still lagging behind academically,
socially and financially.
She cited the Mandal Commission report to stress her point.
The Chief Minister said her government was committed to improving the
lot of backward castes and referred to steps taken by her in this
regard.
The Supreme Court today upheld the constitutional validity of
reservation for backward classes in rural and urbal local bodies and
rejected the plea that the creamy layer should be excluded.
