Explain 'support' to khaps: Cong to Jindal
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
New Delhi: Congress has come out strongly against Khap s t r i d e n
cy, with All India Congress Committee asking Kur u k s h e t r a
Member of Parliament Navin Jindal to explain the controversy about his
involvement on the issue of same-gotra marriage.
All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Prithviraj
Chavan is learnt to have asked Jindal about the facts relating to
reports that he was sympathetic to Khaps seeking ban on samegotra
marriage but which also backed honour killings in defence of their
tradition.
Jindal told TOI that he had clarified through a letter to the
leadership that he had not backed any wrong action of any outfit.
The Congress's demand for explanation and Jindal's lawis-supreme
stand underlines a growing unease in the party at being seen as soft
on pressure tactics from caste panchayats.
A controversy erupted when Jindal attended a Khap meeting in
Kaithal and announced that he would take up their cause with the party
leadership.
Chavan seems to have spoken to him on Tuesday following increasing
pressure on how the party's young Member of Parliament was siding with
medieval practices which seemed to condone murder.
Speaking to TOI, Jindal said he had written to All India Congress
Committee on Tuesday evening to explain his position.
"I have not supported anything wrong by any outfit. What is morally
wrong cannot be politically correct. I have been misquoted in the
press," Jindal said, summing up his clarification.
The MP clarified that "he had only gone to a congregation of
elders" in his constituency and agreed to hand over their memorandum
to the higher-ups in government and the party leadership as they
wanted.
"I am morally bound to do so," he said, adding, "But the law of the
land is supreme. If there is anything illegal, it will be dealt with
by the administration. I am a legislator and not an administrator or
police."
A senior party leader said Jindal had given his explanation and was
not in support of Khaps.
