28 Get 3 Years in Jail for Casteist Slur

Twenty-eight persons have been sentenced to three years in jail by a
court in Bhandara district for abusing Dalits by caste and assault.
Handing down the sentence yesterday, Additional Sessions Judge A Z
Telgote in Khamgaon imposed a fine of Rs 2,500 each on the convicts.
On April 14, 2006, the day of B R Ambedkar birth anniversary, a
quarrel broke out in village Dhorpgaon over a procession in support of
the Dalit icon.
Abusive language were used during the quarrel which resulted in
assault and injuries to some persons, according to the prosecution.
One Wasudeo Avdhut Dhurandhar lodged a police complaint against 28
persons. Police booked them under Indian Penal Code and SC/ST
(Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
