Ruckus at Kancha Ilaiah's book release function
Special Correspondent
Speakers at the release of a Telugu translation of Kancha Ilaiah's
book "Post Hindu India" and some pro-Hindu audience entered into
heated arguments disrupting the book release function at the main dais
of the Vijayawada Book Festival here on Saturday.
This is the first time in 23 years that there was such a row at a book
release function at the book festival. Several new books in Telugu and
sometimes translations are released from the main dais in the
Vijayawada Book Festival a calendar event that always takes place from
January 1 to 11.
Trouble started at the programme when a physician from Khammam
Gopinath said Hinduism was on the wane because it was undemocratic and
giving a gross description of what he called Hindu fundamentalism. But
some people in the audience took objection to Dr. Gopinath's
attributing some brutal acts in Gujarat to Hindu fundamentalists.
A few in the audience tried to disrupt the meeting demanding the
organisers to stop Dr. Gopinath from speaking. Meanwhile, Mr. Ilaiah,
who was also on the dais, took the mike and said he was of the opinion
that Hinduism would not be able to continue if it does not treat
people of all castes equally. He said the people, who belong to castes
that were considered menial by Hinduism were the most productive,
generating wealth for the nation.
Saying that more and more people were distancing themselves from
Hinduism, Mr. Ilaiah said this was happening because the religion was
not in sync with science. He said Afghanistan, Pakistan, and
Bangladesh had taken to Islam because of the flaws in Hinduism and
people in the North Eastern states had embraced Christianity for the
same reason.
He opined that he was against the Telangana movement because the
leaders of the movement were saying that there was no place for others
in the region. Such arguments should be opposed and he was even ready
to give up his life in the fight, he said.
