Mayawati rejects corruption charges against family, issues white paper
on government functioning
Ashish Tripathi, TNN | Dec 16, 2011, 06.45PM IST
LUCKNOW: UP chief minister and BSP supremo Mayawati on Friday came out
in defence of her family and rubbished charges of corruption levelled
by Opposition against her brother and family.
She also rejected allegations of corruption in her government and
issued a `White Paper' in the form of a 84 page booklet on the
activities and tasks performed by its various departments in her term
so far.
The move comes after the BJP and other opposition parties levelled
corruption charges against Mayawati's brother and demanded that
Mayawati issue a white paper on the performance of the state
government, declare her assets and those of her family members.
Speaking on behalf of the chief minister, state cabinet secretary
Sashank Shekhar Singh claimed that the BSP government reporters
inherited corruption from previous governments but has done all it
could to check the menace. "Chief minister has has said that
Opposition has no concrete agenda against the state government, hence
it is dragging names of her family members making false charges
against them. The chief minister has also said that what her family
members do for living is their private matter. Nowhere the state
government has done anything to benefit her family members," Singh
told reporters and read out the statement issued by the chief minister
which stated "I have said it earlier that I keep my family members
away from politics and government work. Procedure of government has
not been compromised for anyone."
On the release of a `White Paper', Singh said that it has been brought
to counter charges of corruption against the state government levelled
by the Opposition parties. All the departments under the state
government have been asked to put information of the work done by them
in detail on their respective websites, he added. The white paper
covers the state's land acquisition policy, rise of revenue upto 20%
in the excise department, need to sell sugar mills, which were in loss
besides highlighting achievements of the energy department. Singh said
that the UP is the first state in India to have issued a `White Paper'
on various functions and tasks undertaken by Mayawati government since
it came to power in 2007.
"During the last five years a lot of work has been done in the
infrastructure development, power generation and the agriculture
sector and these areas have attracted a lot of investment too. The
Mayawati government had taken several measures to raise money which
includes borrowing from Central government, funding agencies, FDI and
raising money from equity model for public welfare projects, the
details of which have been uploaded on our official website and open
for public scrutiny," said Singh.
Justifying expenditure on parks and memorials, Singh said that it was
less than one% of the state's budget and it was done as per
constitutional provisions. He said that UP was probably the only state
where there is no problem in the land acquisition due to its policy
through which farmers consent was taken before acquisition. "The cane
price is also announced keeping in view interest of farmers", he said.
