Why doesn't Mayawati visit your huts, asks Rahul Gandhi

Keeping up the heat on Mayawati, Congress general secretary Rahul
Gandhi on Saturday said the Uttar Pradesh chief minister is scared of
reaching out to the people of the state for fear they would see
through her hollow promises.

"Why doesn't she come to your houses, eat with you or drink water from
your well? She is scared… that if she visits villages and interacts
with people, you will make sure to appraise her of the fact that if
MNREGA is properly implemented in the state, it will develop and the
poor will benefit," Rahul said, while addressing a rally in
Maharajganj district on the last day of his Jansampark Yatra.

The Congress leader once again repeated what he had said on Friday.

"The elephant in Lucknow eats up all the (central) funds that are sent
for various schemes and for the development of the state. A change is
necessary for the development of the state," he said.

"I am ready to give this in writing (with my signature) that you will
not be able to recognise your (developed) state in the next 10 years
after we form the government," Rahul claimed.

He also said Punjab owes its growth in foodgrain production to the
labourers from Uttar Pradesh, who toil in the field. "During my recent
visit to Punjab, farmers there said that without the people of UP
(working for us in our fields) we cannot imagine being one of the
largest producers of foodgrain," he said.

Rahul felt the long stretch of roads (in Punjab) would not have been
possible without the people of UP (working as labourers).
