New norms for fee reimbursement
TNN | Aug 3, 2011, 01.42AM IST
HYDERABAD: Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Tuesday announced the
changes in the fee reimbursement and scholarship scheme in the state.
The Group of Ministers (GoM) constituted for examining the scholarship
scheme also announced their recommendations for efficacy in the
process.
One of the recommendations made by GoM is that the age restriction to
qualify for the post-matric scholarship (PMS) scheme now be made 30
years for other categories of students, and 34 years for SC, ST
students with effect from July 1 this year.
The PMS is given to students pursuing courses like B.Tech, MBA, MCA,
intermediate, B.Pharm, polytechnic, post-graduate courses, nursing,
B.Ed etc.
The GoM has also recommended for grading of the colleges, that a
vigilance committee be constituted for surprise checks and has asked
for reorganization of the paramedical courses. Andhra Pradesh is
currently giving scholarships to 26 lakh students, the highest number
in the country. It is also the first state to make the entire PMS
scheme an online process, and makes payments for the scheme directly
into students' bank accounts. It has been decided that the payment of
reimbursement of tuition fees will now be made in two installments,
while maintenance charges will be paid in four installments.
The CM on Tuesday directed the social welfare department officials
dealing with the PMS to ensure that no eligible student is deprived of
benefits, even while weeding out duplicate and fake claims for
scholarships.
The officials have assured the CM that the online system is foolproof.
He also asked the officials to clear all backlog payments towards the
reimbursement of tuition fees and maintenance charges for 2009-10 and
2010-11, amounting to Rs 480 crore within a month.
