Mayawati finally lends her support to Anna Hazare
Ashish Tripathi, TNN | Aug 17, 2011, 04.31PM IST
LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh chief minister and BSP supremo Mayawati finally
broke her silence on Wednesday and announced her party's support to
Anna Hazare's fight against corruption.
The statement came immediately after the minister of state for animal
husbandry and dairy development Awadh Pal Singh Yadav tendered his
resignation. Yadav resigned after being indicted by the UP Lokayukta
for corruption. The Lokayukta submitted his report on Tuesday
following which the BSP top brass found itself in a dilemma over
staying distant from Anna's countrywide agitation against corruption
when one of its ministers had been indicted for the same.
As a face saving exercise, the BSP decided to ask the minister to
resign on his own on the `moral ground' and then chose to issue a
statement on Anna. The minister, who is also an accused in a recent
triple murder case, had earlier rejected the demand of resignation.
The ruling party had even defended the minister in the UP assembly on
the grounds that the allegations did not mean that a person was
guilty. But the opposition accused Mayawati of protecting a corrupt
minister.
On Wednesday, minutes after Yadav submitted his resignation saying
that he was resigning on the moral grounds and in the interest of free
and fair inquiry of charges against him, the BSP leader Mayawati in an
official statement said that her party had always been against
corruption and criminalisation of politics.
She also said that the BSP had also been supporting Anna's agitation
against corruption since the beginning. She said that the central
government should invite the civil society for talks and reach a
consensus on the issue of the Lokpal.
Maya also described Anna's arrest by the Delhi police as
unconstitutional and undemocratic. She went on to say that the BSP was
not only with Anna but with every organisation fighting against
corruption. She claimed the BSP was founded to fight against
corruption. The BSP, she said, was formed only because all other
political parties which ruled the country after independence failed to
serve the people, particularly the poor masses and downtrodden, with
honesty and dedication.
