Dear Ranjani,
Jai Bhim!

Thanks for bringing these details before the group. Generally its
difficult to know such details of movements as media has become too
much localised and also emails get so much stuffed that it becomes
difficult to filter information.

I have been hearing a few aspects of SIPCOT industrial park and its
likely socio-politco-economic and environment impact from Madhu, Sweta
and others  like CR Bjoy. It is also very encouraging that populist
leaders like Medha had come to extend support towards the movement.
What I understand from your mail is that this movement is gaining
support from

I have a few questions based on my closed association and observation
of many of the environmental movements.

a) I understand that two-third population consist of Dalits (SORRY IT IS 76% AS PER LAKSHMANAN'S REPORT AND 0.5% STS). How does
the caste equation works?

I have seen discriminatory practices within
many of the high profile and populist movements like Narmada where
there were clear cutting lines between the Patidars vis-a-vis Bhils
and Bhilalas right at the beginning of the Maheswar dam struggle in
early 90s.

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THIS. I AM A NEW ENTRANT INTO ACTIVISM. CAN YOU SEND DETAILS.

FRANKLY AS AN INDEPENDNET RESEARCHER AND ACTIVIST I AM CONCERNED THAT JUSTICE COMES TO DALITS OF THERVOY (75%) AND OTHERS THERE.

WHAT HAPPENED IN NARMADA MAY HAVE BEEN RIGHT OR WRONG, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO PUT THE DALITS OF THERVOY AT THE CENTER OF DECISIONS.

b) What is the land holding pattern in Thervoy Kandigai and
neighbouring villages? Who holds the majority of land?

WILL REQUEST LAKSHMANAN MIDS TO SEND YOU RPEORT (HE IS A DALIT)  CCED ABOVE

FROM PAGE 31 OF HIS EIA.

WORKERS: 37.9%
MAIN WORKERS: 28.9%
MIAN CULTIVATORS:15%
MAIN AL: 69.5%
MAIN WORKERS IN HOUSEHHOLDS INDUSTRIES: 3.89%
OTHER WORKERS: 11.41%
MARGIANLA WORKERS: 9.22%
MARGINAL CULTIVATORS: 2.44%
MAIN AGRIC. LAB: 95.12%
MARGINAL WORKERS IN HOSEHOLD IND: 1.22%
MARGINAL OTHER WORKERS: 1.22%
NON WORKERS: 61.87%

c) What is the role of the Dalit groups in the entire struggle? Who
plays the lead role?

MAHESH, THEROVY MUNNERA SANGAM: PHONE 9965350288, A DALIT. THE LETTER SENT TO ALL OF YOU COULD HAVE GONE ON HIS NAME, BUT WE COULD NOT DO THAT WITHOUT CONSULTING HIM. IF YOU FEEL THAT HE SHOULD BE SENDING THE EMAILS, I PERFECTLY UNDERSTAND.  WILL GO EMPLOWER HIM. YOU WILL HAVE TO BEAR WITH BROKEN ENGLISH OR LET HIM POST IN TAMIL.

PROF LAKSHMANAN HAS DONE A STUDY FROM MIDS, A WELL REPUTED DALIT RESEARCHER. C Lakshmanan <laxman@mids.ac.in>;

d) How does the Dalit community organisations understand/take this
movement? Have they come forward to support it?

-YES, THERVOY MUNNERA SANGAM IS INVOLVED. MAHESH..MEAHESH WAS NTO THERE WHEN LETTER DRAFTED. WE DID NOT BELIEVE THAT HIS NAME CAN BE ADDED WITHOUT ASKING HIM
WHILE I AM RECEIVING CALLS FROM MARKET RESEARCH COMPANIES (I AM SURE ACTIING  ON BEHEST OF MICHELIN COMPANY) , SHOULD MAHESH BEAR THIS BRUNT IS ANOTHER QUESTION WHICH I WANT CLARITY FROM ALL OF YOU
- PROF LAXMANAN, MIDS, A DALIT IS INVOLVED. HE WAS NOT THERE WHEN THIS LETTER WAS WRITTEN, OTHERWISE HIS NAME WOULD HAVE BEEN ADDED IF HE WANTED IT
- ONE DALIT NGO/AMEBDKAR MANDRAN  IS INDEPENDTLY INVOLVED AND CAME ON THE COMMON PLATFORM WHEN MEDHA CAME..

e) Apart from the environmental support groups, had it got the support
of the Dalit movements in the State?

NICHOLAS GAVE FULL SUPPORT. FURTHER DETAILS FROM MAHESH.

Please get back to me either on my personal email or the DMA group.
Maybe it would help the ones to know more about the movement. As
instructed by you, I also have added Arul Doss to the group too.

THANKS SO MUCH. AT NO COST SHOULD DALITS LEAVE THIS GROUP BECAUSE OF ME/ARUL/NAPM.

BUT LET MAHESH/LAXMANAN COME IN IF THEY WANT TO

With much metta
Goldy

*Creation of a casteless and peaceful society is indeed the first step
towards just, egalitarian, and harmonious society. A society of equals,
neither unequal nor more-equals, beyond the strings of caste, class, gender,
race, ethnicity, etc. Otherwise it leads to social oppression, political
exploitation, economic deprivation, cultural domination, gender
discrimination, class isolation, deliberate exclusion. Lets' believe in a
society beyond this....*
