It is not a bylined write-up but its author is Nagaraju Koppula, who is
probably the first Madiga (the single largest Dalit community in Andhra
Pradesh) person to become a reporter in a English Newspaper. At least, I
don't know of another Madiga entering English newspapers. It is a small but
significant piece of good news. He has post-graduate education in History
from UoH, Journalism from IIJNM, Bengalore and Creative Writing diploma from
Tehelka School of Journalism and interned with The Hindu before joining The
New Indian Express, Hyderabad.
Unlike the Dalits in other professions, journalists from our community have
to approach for contacts, opinions, materials and information suddenly
because they themselves are given assignments at a short-notice. Most
developed and dominant communities have their own ways of making their own
versions about everything to pass on to journalists to influence the popular
opinion. Dalit communities sadly lack such mechanisms and mentalities. It is
the community's responsibility to be additionally forthcoming and helpful
when journalists need its help and cooperation. I hope Nagaraju Koppula will
get such support from the community- particularly students, activists,
professionals, politicians and intellectuals.
Nagaraju can be reached at: nagarajkoppula@gmail.com
It is also a happy news that this item is about the first "Ambedkar Studies"
Department in a Central University. Again, it is established by Dr. K. Y.
Ratnam of Department of Political Science.
Yours,
Chittibabu Padavala
