Mayawati can''t hijack our following among Jats: RLD
PTI | 11:03 PM,Mar 29,2011
Allahabad, Mar 29 (PTI) Attacking alleged "duplicity" of the ruling
BSP in Uttar Pradesh over the Jat stir, the Rashtriya Lok Dal today
said Mayawati would not succeed in "hijacking" its following among the
community accusing the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister of hoodwinking
them. "The repeated claims of Chief Minister Mayawati that she was
supportive of the Jats' demand for reservation is yet another example
of duplicity on her part. I have been raising the issue on the floor
of the Parliament and none of her MPs has ever supported me on the
issue in the House", RLD general secretary Jayant Chaudhary told
reporters here. He said the RLD fully supported the Jats' demand for
reservation, but did not approve of "the methods employed to raise the
issue, which has resulted in widespread lawlessness and inconvenience
to the general public". Chaudhary, who is the son of RLD supremo
Chaudhary Ajit Singh, also said his party suspected "the lawlessness
was stage-managed by the ruling BSP which is trying hard to cut into
our electoral base in Jat-dominated areas of western UP ahead of the
assembly elections due next year". "We are however confident that
Mayawati will not succeed in hijacking our following among the
community as we have been raising its concerns at the appropriate
forums unlike the ruling party which has only been hoodwinking them.
The ruling party's conspiracy is evident from the alacrity with which
the stir was pulled off and railway tracks were cleared once the
Allahabad High Court acted tough", he said. "People can not be fooled
so easily. They will see through the drama. In neighbouring Haryana,
which too witnessed similar agitations, the Chief Minister at least
had the decency to talk to the agitators and give the assurance that
he will do his bit. The UP CM has been doing little other than writing
letters to the PM and demanding more central forces to maintain law
and order", the RLD leader remarked. Chaudhary, who is touring eastern
Uttar Pradesh, said his party has "always supported creation of
smaller states for better governance" and it would do so with regard
to the demand for a separate state of Poorvanchal.
