Nalgonda: A large number of Dalits and girijans, including Chenchus in
their traditional attire, have been staging a sit-in in front of the
Collectorate here since Monday morning as part of a 48-hour protest
programme to lay siege to the centre of power in support of several
demands of Dalits and tribals who constitute over 28 per cent of the
population in the district.
The demands include making available adequate budget to be spent under
a sub-plan for the expeditious development of Dalitwadas and girijan
thandas.
The protestors took part in dharnas, marked by various programmes like
'vanta-varpu' (mass cooking ) and gave a display of their varied dance
forms. An estimated 2,000-3,000 Dalits and tribals who represent three
CPI(M)- affiliated organisations-Association Against Caste
Discrimination, AP Vyavasaya Karmika Sangam and State Girijana
Sangham-blocked the entry of Collector S.A.M. Rizvi, who, after an
argument with leaders of the agitators, got into the office from
another gate.
The Collectorate staff, who are already participating in the
non-cooperation agitation by the government employees demanding
introduction of a bill in the current session of Parliament on the
creation of statehood for Telangana for the last ten days were absent
in their offices. Only a few persons were seen on the premises as it
was a scheduled Grievances Day.
Nandyala Narasimha Reddy, CPI(M) district secretary, Nomula
Narasimhaiah, former party's floor leader in the Assembly, Kondamallu
Narasimha, Kula Vivaksha Porata Samiti's district secretary, M.
Ramulu, president, Agricultural Workers' Union, and Sriramulu Naik,
secretary, Girijana Sangam, Swaruparani, State All-India Democratic
Women's Association secretary, Muralikrishna, State president, AP
Vyavasaya Karmika Sangam, were among the leaders who are taking part
in the protest programmes along with the activists of the
organisations.
