Basant Gupta, sub-judicial magistrate (SDM) of Bansgaon in east Uttar
Pradesh's Gorakhpur district breaks out in cold sweat as chief
minister Mayawati arraigns him with one poser after another about
development works in an Ambedkar village in the area.
The official is virtually reduced to a nervous wreck by the time the
Dalit leader struts sway declaring that she would be back in a month's
time to take stock so things should be spruced.
Gupta is not alone. Many like him are at the receiving end of
Mayawati's wrath, which has come to acquire legendary status amongst
the state's bureaucracy.
Mayawati is out to set things straight and she apparently wants the
effect to show at the grassroots level in view of the UP elections due
next year. Scenes of top officers blabbering before the mighty Behnji
are a common sightas the UP CM heli-hops across the state, landing
wherever she pleases, shunting and suspending officers.
The very first day of the Dalit icon's review tour of the
Gorakhpur-Maharajganj region on Tuesday brought bad tidings for the
state's officialdom. Kushinagar district magistrate (DM) SVS Rangarao
got marching orders. Sources said the CM blew her top over tardy
electrification work in an Ambedkar village.
The chief medical superintendent (Kushinagar) got away with an adverse
entry in his annual report. Vice-chairman of the Gorakhpur development
authority and the district inspector of schools (DIOS) were handed
transfer orders.
Mayawati has been taking the officials by surprise. The first day,
Kushinagar was not on her flight plan but she insisted on landing
there. The next day, she paid a similarly surprise visit to Agra which
found no mention in her original itinerary.
