Doctors apprehend misuse of SC/ST Act
STAFF WRITER 18:8 HRS IST
Kanpur, Feb 4 (PTI) With four medicos in private clinics being booked
under the SC/ST Act after patients belonging to dalit community died
while undergoing treatment, doctors in the district have expressed
apprehension that it could set off a wrong trend.
Devendra Lal Chandani, Kanpur head of the Indian Medical Association,
said that the doctors are afraid to take up cases, especially when
patients are being brought to them in critical condition, after the
recent incidents.
"Four private doctors have been booked under the Scheduled Castes and
the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and Section 304
(culpable homicide not amounting to murder). A woman doctor even had
to spend 45 days in jail," he said.
Chandani said that the issue was being discussed by IMA members here.
"We are trying to find a solution," he said adding that there should
not be any hasty move by police in such cases.
