JAJPUR (ORISSA): Police on Thursday quizzed a few people in connection
with the rape and murder of a Dalit woman two days ago. The
36-year-old Dalit lady Damayanti Mallick was reportedly found raped
and murdered in Gadamadhupur forest area in Orissa's Jajpur district
in October 26 night.

According to her family members, along with a few women Damayanti, a
native of Kusapasi village under Jenapur police station limits had
gone to the forest to collect fire wood. Suspicion arose as she didn't
return home in time.

"The women who had accompanied her told me that she was along with
them till the afternoon. But they didn't find her while returning back
to their respective homes. Believing that she might have returned back
they didn't pay much heed," said the victim's husband Jhari Mallick.

"When she didn't return home till the late evening, I along with some
local villagers went on searching in the jungle, nearly 2 km from our
home. We spotted her body in the forest. She had injury and nail marks
on her cheek, neck, chest and belly. As she was bleeding we believed
she was raped and then strangulated to death," he alleged.

Meanwhile, police have registered a case and initiated thorough
investigation. A team of scientific officials and police dog squad
have visited the spot. Still the police are yet to make any
breakthrough in this case.

Police sources said efforts were on to identify the accused person and
nab him. "We suspect the woman has been raped and murdered as she had
injury marks on her body and was bleeding. But we are waiting for the
post mortem report. Raids are on in different places to nab the
accused," said police inspector Sriharsa Mishra.

Tension ran high in the village as the villagers demanded immediate
arrest of the accused and stringent punishment for him. "We have
quizzed the women who had accompanied the victim. Though we didn't get
any substantial clue, but hope to get the lead very soon," the police
officer added.
