Cornered Haryana sets up probe panel

CHANDIGARH: Pushed to the wall by Supreme Court's rap on Mirchpur,
Haryana government on Friday finally set up a one-man commission of
inquiry headed by retired Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Iqbal
Singh,to probe the caste violence in this Hisar village on April 21.
A Dalit was charred to death along with his physically challenged
daughter after Jats torched their houses. Such an occurrence in a
Congress-ruled state, led to Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi
visiting the state and party chief Sonia Gandhi coming down hard on
Haryana chief minister B S Hooda for the incident, making it clear
that the atrocities were unacceptable.
In fact, the Hooda government initially failed to realize the gravity
of the situation. The government's complacence stemmed from its
success in handling other controversies like fake encounters or firing
on guest teachers. Badly misjudging the situation, Hooda visited the
village only six days after the incident.
Though he tried his best to pacify the Dalits with offers, it was of
no help as he had come after Kumari Selja, Dalit face of the Congress
and a strong claimant for the CM's post. But, it was the low profile
visit of Rahul Gandhi that gave a real jolt to the CM.
