Dalit man attempts self-immolation on Ambedkar Jayanti
TNN, Apr 14, 2010, 10.43pm IST
RAJKOT: A Dalit man attempted to immolate himself in the city alleging
injustice on Wednesday, which was coincidentally celebrated across the
country as birth anniversary of Dr B R Ambedkar. The man was arrested
immediately in a timely intervention by police.
Sources said Bhurelal Munshi (48) of Motibarar village in
Maliya-Miyana taluka in Rajkot had asked for a piece of land for
residential purpose from his taluka development officer. As a
labourer, Munshi was expecting a piece of land as per a government
policy.
According to Munshi, he was not allotted the land intentionally and
thus, he decided to kill himself in front of his leader Dr Ambedkar's
statute on his birth anniversary. He said he had also given his
requirement in writing, but to no avail.
"However, getting a whiff of his intention, officials of A division
police station reached the spot and took Munshi into custody at 11
am," said investigating officer I M Barot.
"Munshi is a labourer and has two sons, one of which is working with
State Reserve Police (SRP). Another one lives with him in his village.
As they did not have any house, they had asked for the 100 sq ft piece
of land from the government," Barot said.
In fact, this is Munshi's second protest. In February, he had sat in
protest near the taluka office for a few days. He was then convinced
to break his fast by government officials who had promised action
within 15 days. "As nothing happened, I got desperate," Munshi, who
was let out on bail after being presented before the mamlatdar, said.
