Dalit Killings: Buta Visits Village, to Submit Report Soon
Hisar (Haryana) | Apr 24, 2010
Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes Buta Singh
today visited Mirchpur village in Haryana's Hisar district where two
dalits were charred to death in a flare up of caste violence early
this week.
Accompanied by senior civil and police officers, Singh took stock of
the situation in the village in the wake of the killings and promised
adequate security for dalits.
He said he would submit his report into the outbreak of caste violence
to the President, the Prime Minister and the Governor and the Chief
Minister of Haryana at the earliest.
Buta also visited the house of the dalit girl and his father who were
burnt alive when members of a particular caste set afire a number of
houses in the village.
Ending a two-day stand off, the two dalits were cremated last evening
after the administration promised action against those found guilty
and announced compensation for the bereaved family.
The Bhupinder Singh Hooda-led Congress government had announced
financial relief of Rs five lakh for the family and Rs one lakh each
to those whose houses were torched.
The state government had already suspended an SHO in connection with
the violence.
Eighteen-year-
Tara Chand, 70, were killed when members of upper castes torched some
12 to 15 dalit houses on April 21.
The Opposition INLD demanded the resignation of Hooda in the wake of
the killings.
"Hooda has no moral right to continue in office. His claim his
government is committed to the welfare of dalits has fallen flat,"
INLD leader Ajay Chautala told reporters here.
He should immediately resign, the party Secretary General said.
Chautala alleged police had remained a mute spectator when the houses
of dalits were set ablaze.
