[ZESTCaste] Vendetta? Akhilesh undoes Maya effect

Vendetta? Akhilesh undoes Maya effect
Published: Sunday, Mar 18, 2012, 10:15 IST | Updated: Sunday, Mar 18,
2012, 1:23 IST
By Deepak Gidwani | Place: Lucknow | Agency: DNA

Just two days old in the Uttar Pradesh chief minister's chair,
Akhilesh Yadav has started overturning his predecessor Mayawati's
decisions in a big way.

Among his first decisions, he has cut down the Dalit leader's
elaborate security. Over 400 police personnel posted for Mayawati's
security at her home and office have now been removed. She would now
get Z-plus security like any other former CM.

The number of cars in her cavalcade has been almost halved, and
security from her Delhi residence removed completely.
The government has, in fact, decided to review all the decisions taken
by the Mayawati regime over the past two months.

One of the Dalit icon's last decisions, taken on the day the results
came in, was to provide a driver and a peon to all retired chief
secretaries and cabinet secretaries.

The move was solely aimed to benefit Mayawati's Man Friday ex-cabinet
secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh. The decision has already been
challenged in court, but sources say it might be struck down even
before the petition is heard.

The new government is also expected to take a decision soon on the
Lokayukta's report recommending a CBI inquiry against Naseemuddin
Siddiqui, the senior-most minister in Mayawati's cabinet.

Earlier, Mayawati had returned the report challenging the Lokayukta's
authority to look into the matter, and summarily refusing to take any
action based on his report. Siddiqui faces serious charges related to
corruption and amassing disproportionate assets.

Interestingly, UP Lokayukta NK Mehrotra, who was to retire on March
15, has been given a two-year extension.

The Samajwadi Party government has passed orders to freeze all
recruitment exercises initiated by the previous government. All top
bureaucrats who ruled the roost during Mayawati's regime have been
stripped of their posts and kept in waiting.

All political appointments made for the posts of chairmen in various
boards, corporations and commissions have also been cancelled with
immediate effect.

The State Advisory Council, a powerful body constituted under BSP MP
and Mayawati's legal eagle Satish Chandra Mishra, has been dissolved
by the new government.

In a major shift, powers of the chief secretary have been restored
completely. In the previous regime, the chief secretary was
overshadowed by the cabinet secretary, a post which has now been done
away with. Akhilesh has also promised to establish an enquiry
commission to get all charges of corruption against the previous
government investigated.

[ZESTCaste] Dalit party upset with Sena-BJP in Maharashtra

Dalit party upset with Sena-BJP in Maharashtra
Submitted by admin4 on 17 March 2012 - 7:42pm

By IANS,

Mumbai : Barely a month after the civic elections in Maharashtra,
cracks seemed to have appeared in the Republican Party of India's
(RPI) ties with the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (SS-BJP)
alliance, sources said Saturday.

Stung by the denial of a Rajya Sabha nomination to RPI chief Ramdas
Athavale, the party has decided to discard all the alliance posts
allotted to it by the SS-BJP as a mark of protest by the Dalits, a
party leader said.

The Sena recently announced the nomination of Anil Desai as a Rajya
Sabha candidate, rejecting former Lok Sabha speaker Manohar Joshi. The
RPI hoped its nominee would be accommodated in place of Joshi.

"We have never sought a Rajya Sabha nomination, but we were expecting
it since we have wholeheartedly contributed to the SS-BJP's victory in
Mumbai, Thane and its good showing in other parts of the state," said
party spokesperson Arun Dangle.

RPI legislator Sumantrao Gaekwad asserted that the party would
continue to remain with the SS-BJP alliance despite the denial of a
Rajya Sabha ticket.

"Our aim was not to secure a Rajya Sabha ticket, but to trounce the
ruling Congress-Nationalist Congress Party, not only in the recent
civic elections, but also in the forthcoming 2014 assembly elections,"
Gaekwad said, at a joint media interaction here with Dangle.

The RPI had decided to discard all the alliance posts allotted to it
by the SS-BJP, Dangle said.

He added that Athavale would shortly meet Shiv Sena chief Bal
Thackeray and executive president Uddhav Thackeray in this regard.

The RPI leaders claimed that the RPI's support had widened the support
base of the SS-BJP in the recent civic elections all over Maharashtra.

However, they pointed out that barring Mumbai, the RPI nominees did
not get the advantage of SS-BJP votes in any other civic body in the
state.

Ahead of coronation, Akhilesh's partymen thrash Dalits

New Delhi: With just few hours to go before the Akhilesh Yadav-led
Samajawadi Party government takes charge in UP, the lawlessness by
the SP workers in the state has yet again started to show.

In continuation of violence reported across Uttar Pradesh after the
SP's victory in the assembly elections, over a dozen Dalits were
thrashed by party workers in the Dadri area, where outgoing CM and BSP
supremo Mayawati's ancestral village, Badalpur, is located.

According to the media reports, a few SP workers allegedly thrashed
dalits in Ramgarh area in Dadri on Wednesday over a petty issue.

Local residents said that after the incident, the Ramgarh village head
and his family members and supporters brutally thrashed the dalit
group in which at least 20 people were injured, six of them
critically.

Among the injured are women who have been admitted to hospitals with
fractured bones.

Tension prevails in the area even as additional police personnel were
deployed at the village to prevent fresh outbreak of clash.

An FIR was lodged at Dadri police station late evening in connection
with the incident.
