Pitroda's new role: OBC poster boy for Cong in UP polls

LucknowYes, I am the son of a carpenter, and I am proud of it!" This
is none other than Satyanarayan Gangaram Pitroda, aka Sam Pitroda, the
IT czar who sired the Indian telecom revolution, in his new avatar as
star campaigner for the Congress in Uttar Pradesh.

"If Pitroda can do it, so can you. So can a million others as well. In
order to change the face of India, we first need to change the heart
of India. The body cannot leave the heart behind," Pitroda tells
leaders from his community, who gather to meet him as he releases the
party's Vision 2020 document in Kanpur on Friday.

Comfortable in his new role as poster boy for wooing the backward
castes, after Rahul Gandhi announced in a rally of "most-backwards"
last month that Pitroda belonged to the Vishwakarma caste and was a
badhai (carpenter) by profession, he tells this reporter: "I thank the
Congress party for giving me this opportunity and though I have many
engagements, I will do whatever little I can do to help."

While he is upfront in owning up to his caste background, as well as
his friendship with the Gandhi family, Pitroda makes little of the
hype that Rahul deliberately revealed his caste to woo the OBCs, and
that he is the Congress' trump card against BJP's Uma Bharti and Babu
Singh Kushwaha. "What Rahul said should not be seen in the context of
caste and vote bank politics. It was a statement made to mirror a
reality that exists. And also the fact that caste identity is not
supreme. Opportunity is the key and if I can use opportunities that
came my way and make it so far, why cannot they?" he argues.

Stating that Rajiv Gandhi wanted UP in the forefront and technology
was the key to solving problems relating to infrastructure, health and
education, he says the next 10 years are very crucial for India and
for UP. "I strongly believe that if the rest of India is growing at
8%, UP must grow at 10%. Growth has to reach the bottom of the pyramid
and basic needs relating to education and health need to be addressed.
To weed out disparity, which is our biggest problem, we need to focus
on young talent and the role of technology. This is a vision of the
Congress, the vision of Rajiv Gandhi. His unfinished agenda will now
be completed by his son Rahul. He has the same vision, he understands
technology," says Pitroda, sounding like a seasoned politician.

Currently adviser to the Prime Minister on public information
infrastructure and innovations, Pitroda is likely to address some
political rallies of the Congress in eastern and central UP. Raj
Babbar, chairman of the UP Congress media campaign committee, says,
"It is unfortunate that the state has stopped where the Congress left
it 22 years back. Since then, no work has been done on the development
front, be it industrialisation or agriculture. The Congress has a
vision for the state, a concrete road map which has been prepared on
the basis of the feedback of the people. Since Sam Pitroda comes from
the working class, he can explain, not just to the English speaking
classes, but also to the backward classes what it means to think big.
He has the credibility to go to the people and tell them, 'We can do
it; we will do it'."

[ZESTCaste] Cong makes desperate dash to garner UP Brahmin votes

Cong makes desperate dash to garner UP Brahmin votes
TNN | Jan 29, 2012, 04.38AM IST

NEW DELHI: Few in Uttar Pradesh would have heard Mange Ram Sharma's
name. But the Congress leader from Haryana has been asked to campaign
in the state. So are many others who may be faceless for an average UP
voter, but have a surname that suggests they are Brahmins.

Congress is mobilizing Brahmin leaders of consequence or otherwise
from across the country to boost its campaign in Uttar Pradesh amid
concern that the party's strong pitch for Muslims and OBCs may have
left the Brahmins peeved.

The upper castes formed the Congress core since Independence and were
expected to be the first to return to the party fold after Rahul
Gandhi took over the reins. However, the 'social engineering' for the
upcoming polls seems to have blacked out the community, who are being
wooed by BSP's sarvjan slogan and BJP's use of Atal Bihari Vajpayee's
image. The belated concern has forced the Congress to send an SOS to
its Brahmin leaders - big and small, young and old. Delhi CM Sheila
Dikshit and many others from north India are likely to descend on the
state soon.

The worry on the Brahmin front is a first for Congress which, despite
the premier community's desertion in the wake of Ayodhya movement, was
assured its return would lay the foundation for the party's revival in
the state.

But Congress's most serious attempt in UP in the last 20 years does
not seem to have enthused the Brahmins. Many attribute the
indifference to the party's blind focus on OBCs, Muslims and dalits,
complaining the community felt taken for granted. The leadership front
too seems barren despite Rita Joshi and Pramod Tiwari being heads of
Congress state unit and legislature party, respectively, who are
overshadowed by the central leaders.Insiders have advocated caution in
junking the old support-base for the new combination.

However, much changed over the last few years to resurrect Congress's
fortunes. For instance, BJP's continuing failure in Delhi has nudged
the Brahmins to reconsider their options, while their short-lived
bonhomie with BSP post-2007 seems to have soured too. Congress
strategists say the party is keen to seize the vacuum on the Brahmin
front.

Cong drafts Brahmin leaders to woo upper caste vote bank

NEW DELHI: Few in Uttar Pradesh would have heard Mange Ram Sharma's

in the state. So are many others who may be faceless for an average UP
voter, but have a surname that suggests Brahmin caste.

complaining the community felt taken for granted. The leadership front
too seems barren despite Rita Joshi and Pramod Tiwari being heads of
Congress state unit and legislature party, respectively, who are
overshadowed by the central leaders.

Insiders have advocated caution in junking the old support-base for
the new combination. The Brahmins form a critical group across UP and
their support can make or mar the chances in many assembly seats, and
their good presence even in strong OBC strongholds like central UP and
Bundelkhand are a case in point. "So, why unnecessarily give them a
reason to feel aggrieved?" a leader said.

Brahmins' exit from Congress was part of the unraveling of Congress's
traditional base during the Ayodhya movement. The temple-triggered
polarization snuffed the life out of the grand old party, as Muslims
slipped towards 'Maulana Mulayam' and BJP swept the upper castes with
Hindu appeal. A declining Congress star was the apt recipe for the
rising BSP to work its magic on dalits. That was the end of
dalit-Muslim-Brahmin axis that formed the basis for Congress's
invincibility in the heartland.

However, much changed over the last few years to resurrect Congress's
fortunes. For instance, BJP's continuing failure in Delhi has nudged
the Brahmins to reconsider their options, while their short-lived
bonhomie with BSP post-2007 seems to have soured too.

Congress strategists say the party is keen to seize the vacuum on the
Brahmin front.

The state police on Saturday ruled out any plot behind the desecration
of B.R. Ambedkar's statue, stating that the offence was committed by
the three youths in an intoxicated condition.

However, there is no explanation from the police on the series of
incidents of statues of other leaders being damaged across the state.

The state intelligence suspects that the desecrations may be an
attempt to ignite a caste war in the state and divide the people of
two communities.

After the Ambedkar statues, statues of former chief ministers N.T.
Rama Rao and Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, on Saturday reports came of
freedom fighter and educationist Acharya N.G, Ranga and Cong-ress
leader Vangaveeti Mohan Ranga's statues being damaged in coastal and
Ranga Reddy district .

A senior police official said, "It all started after Telugu Desam
president N. Chandrababu Naidu's remarks that he will pull down former
chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy's statues if the TD comes back to
power as some of the statues were blocking free movement of traffic.
Even the verbal war between Congress leader K. Chiranjeevi and actor
N. Balakrishna led to a flare up of emotions between the people."

[ZESTCaste] Government firm on shifting statue of Ambedkar

http://ibnlive.in.com/news/government-firm-on-shifting-statue-of-ambedkar/225212-60-115.html

Government firm on shifting statue of Ambedkar
indianexpress Express News Service , The New Indian Express

MANGALORE: The state government on Saturday remained firm on its
decision to shift the statue of Ambedkar, in front of Vidhana Soudha,
in order to expedite Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited's
(BMRCL) metro project in Bangalore.

"The Ambedkar statue will be shifted temporarily to a safe place in
order to facilitate BMRCL's metro project," Chief Minister D V
Sadananda Gowda told reporters soon after his arrival at Maryhill
helipad, to inaugurate developmental programmes in Mangalore.

It will be re-installed at the same place after the completion of
work, the Chief Minister clarified when reporters sought to know about
the government's stand, as Dalits were stiffly resisting the
relocation of the statue.

Justifying the decision to shift the statue as "necessary", he said
the decision to relocate the statue was taken after convening a
meeting of the Social Welfare Department and the Cabinet.

On rising communal conflicts in the district, he said the government
will take action against the culprits.

"There is no question of favouring any community," he said. Asked
about the Governor's decision to clear the name of Justice
Chandrashekharaiah for the post of Upa Lokayukta, the Chief Minister
refused to discuss anything about the Governor in the public domain.
