MADURAI: Fearing an outbreak of communal violence in Villoor village
at T Kallupatti union in Tirumangalam taluk in Madurai district,
following a dispute over a Dalit riding a two-wheeler across the
street of Caste Hindus on Sunday, a large posse of police personnel
were deployed in the area.

Additional forces were also pressed into service after Asra Garg, SP,
was forced to open fire in the air to disperse a rampaging mob, which
even tried to attack the Superintendent of Police.

It may be recalled that G Thangapandian, a Dalit living in the
village, was riding his motorcycle along the Kaliamman Kovil main
street, an area which has been out of bounds for the Dalits for a long
time. On noticing this, Caste Hindus, particularly those belonging to
the Agamudaiyar community, prevented him from riding the two-wheeler.
This led to an altercation and the issue was brought to the notice of
the SP, and it led to the arrest of five persons belonging to the
Agamudaiyar community.

When Madurai Superintendent of Police, Asra Garg, attempted to convene
a peace committee to bring about a solution to the issue, a gang of
Caste Hindus tried to attack Asra Garg.

In self defence, the SP was forced to open fire in the air in which
three persons were injured. P Kalimuthu, suffered a bullet injury,
while S Muthiah and A Pazhani were injured in the lathi charge. The
three were admitted to Government Rajaji Hospital and the condition of
all the three is said to be stable.

During this clash, the SP's car was damaged. The windscreen and
lights of the vehicle were broken. The houses of G Murugan, brother of
Thangapandian, his uncle and also that of Thangapandian were attacked
by the gang, but no one was injured, said Murugan.

On Sunday afternoon, f men and women cops strolled in the village and
all the shops run by Caste Hindus were closed. Around 45 people
belonging to the Agamudaiyar community were held, with eight cases
being registered, said IG M N Manjunatha, South Zone.

[ZESTCaste] ADGP warns police officials who ''misled'' govt over caste clash

ADGP warns police officials who ''misled'' govt over caste clash
PTI | 12:05 PM,May 04,2011

Madurai, May 4 (PTI) Visiting a village in the district where caste
clashes took place recently that resulted in the police opening fire,
seriously injuring three, a senior official today warned district
police officials who had been "misleading" the government about the
situation in the region. Additional Director General of Police K
Radhakrishnan, who visited Villoor village near Tirumangalam, about 40
km from here, where Dalits and members of the dominant community in
the village had clashed on May 1, warned that police officials who
failed to take action against Dalit atrocities would be booked under
the provisions of the SC/ST act. Radhakrishnan also warned the
district police officials against misleading the government by giving
a "false picture about the clash". Talking to reporters here late
yesterday, he said that the Dalits in the village were not allowed to
wear chappals, ride vehicles or even allowed seats in restaurants. "I
understand they were made to sit on the floors in the hotels. A Dalit
by name G Thanga Pandian was prevented from riding his vehicle on a
caste Hindu street on Aug 31,2010".Thanga Pandian's vehicles was also
allegedly seized by members of the dominant community. "The special
branch CID had warned about the possible unrest. But the police
officials had failed to take any action. The District officials had
also claimed that the clash reports that had come in the newspapers
were false, thus misleading the state administration. "If action had
been taken on time such untoward incident would not have taken place",
he said. Radhakrishnan commended the action of SP Asra Garg, who had
ordered police to open fire after the failure of efforts to control
members of the dominant community who had pelted stones, injuring some
policemen, demanding the release of five persons arrested in
connection with the seizure of Thanga Pandian's two-wheeler. Police
also arrested 100 persons in connection in connection with the unrest.
Meanwhile, People's Watch, an NGO fighting for human rights, demanded
action under various sections of SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act
against those who practiced untouchability. As the Villoor village had
many forms of atrocities, necessary action should be taken, it
demanded in a statement. The NGO said externment powers under sections
11,12,13 of SC/ST PoA Act should be used against the members of the
dominant caste in the village who were most likely to commit an
offence against the Dalit community. Externment power had not been
sufficiently utilised by the state and it should be used in such cases
to protect the oppressed, it said.

Re: [ZESTCaste] 'Beef fest' leads to tension on Eflu campus

It is suggested that Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists show their protests in all the 5 star hotels where Beef is served daily to its customers in general whenever there is any kind of seminars, where majority of the participants are brahmins in particular. Is it that the brahmins are permitted to eat whatever they like especially when they are working in Foreign countries ?

'Beef fest' leads to tension on Eflu campus
TNN | May 2, 2011, 12.05am IST

HYDERABAD: Tension prevailed on English and Foreign Languages
University (Eflu) campus on Sunday following the attack a day before
on dalit students of the university by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi
Parishad (ABVP) activists. On Saturday, about 15 dalit students were
attacked by ABVP activists for planning to conduct a 'Beef Festival'
on campus.

According to members of Dalit Adivasi Bahujan Minority Students'
Association (DABMSA) and Telangana Students' Association (TSA) who
jointly planned to conduct the festival from Saturday with the support
of almost all student unions on campus, the ABVP activists barged into
the campus kitchen and threw down the vessels in which the beef was
cooked.

They also reportedly broke furniture in the mess hall and pelted
stones at the college buildings. The two groups of agitated students
were dispersed by Osmania University police.

On Sunday morning, the university authorities closed the men's hostel
mess to prevent any untoward incident.

However, a large section of students are reportedly demanding that
beef be included in the mess menu. Dalit and OBC students comprise 50
per cent of the student population at Eflu.

The dalit activists said they had taken up the issue of serving beef
in the mess hall following a talk given about a month ago by Veena
Satrugna, former deputy director, National Institute of Nutrition, on
beef being ignored from the "traditional" Indian meal.

The students said that several discussions were held on including beef
in the menu during which objections were raised on cooking and serving
issues. "We had promised other students that beef would be cooked
using separate vessels and would be served outside the mess hall. Our
demand is that the exercise be brought under the purview of the mess
committee,'' said a dalit student and member, DABMSA.

A representation signed by 60 students was submitted to the university
authorities requesting that beef be part of the menu.

This is not the first time that such a festival is being conducted on
the campus here. The beef fests in the past were conducted smoothly
without any opposition from any student groups.

"The university cannot prevent students from conducting such a
festival on campus and we are not averse to the idea of the festival
and respect the sentiment behind it. The mess hall which was damaged
by the students will be reopened after a few days. The university and
police are investigating into the violence on campus," said
Nagamallika Gudipaty, dean, School of Communication and spokesperson,
Eflu.
