Lucknow: Union minister Kapil Sibal on Friday ridiculed Uttar Pradesh
Chief Minister Mayawati for "remaining ignorant" of corruption by her
ministers for full five years and coming to know about it only at
election time.

"It is surprising that when the entire country was aware of corruption
in her government, she remained ignorant during her full five-year
term and today when elections have been announced she has come to know
of it," he told reporters here.

The HRD Minister said the rate at which he has removed 12 ministers,
by the time elections are held all the remaining ones might also be
sacked on corruption charges and Mayawati might find herself alone in
the ministry.

Sibal was here on way to Gorakhpur to participate in a programme but
could not proceed due to bad weather.

Terming the BSP government as the most tainted, he said corruption has
been made an election issue by the people who had been at the
receiving end during the past 20 years by every political permutation
and combination in Uttar Pradesh.

The state has got one corrupt government after the other in these 20
years, he said adding people of the state are tired of these parties
and have made up their minds to repose faith in the Congress.

Attacking the Chief Minister, Sibal alleged that one-third of the
state's budget has been spent by her on statues while Rs 12 crore has
been spent on her own residence.

Though funds were required in drought-prone Bundelkhand region, the
money was spent on her statues, he alleged.

Ahead of the upcoming Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, the Election
Commission is likely to take a decision on Saturday on whether to
cover up statues of chief minister Mayawati and that of the Bahujan
samaj Party's poll symbol, the elephant.

According to a CNN-IBN report, the EC
may take a decision on this at its meeting on Saturday evening as many
political parties, including the BJP, have complained that the statues
give the BSP an unfair advantage.

The BJP had demanded that the Election Commission should order removal
of statues of elephants - the poll symbol of BSP - installed in the
state.

"Though government hoardings and advertisements were removed after
model code of conduct came into effect, the statues of elephants have
not been removed," BJP national spokesman Ramnath Kovid had said in
Lucknow on last Saturday.

LUCKNOW: Politicians in Uttar Pradesh are now openly promising cheap
liquor and free-for-all firearm licences if voted to power in the
assembly election.

After Samajwadi Party (SP) state president Akhilesh Yadav sought
public support at a public meeting in Bhimnagar pointing out that the
prices of alcohol have gone up in the Mayawati regime, Bahujan Samaj
Party (BSP) leader and social welfare minister in Mayawati's
government Indrajeet Saroj, at a public meeting in Kaushambi, assured
people that firearms licences will be distributed in large numbers in
the area if BSP continues in power after the election.

Yadav, who has opposed the entry of west Uttar Pradesh mafia don D P
Yadav in SP, landed in a controversy on Thursday when he said that not
only the prices of petrol and diesel have gone up, people are not
evening getting their daily dose of 'evening medicine' (liquor) as
prices have shot up.

He said that people who consume alcohol are the real campaigners of
the party. He said those who consume 'sham ki dawa' are with the SP
and thus, they are the party's real campaigners. Saroj, on the other
hand, promised voters firearm licences in exchange for support to the
BSP.

He said that people need firearm licence for self protection. Saroj
was apparently trying to appease the people in the area where firearms
are a status symbol. Most people in the upper castes have firearms.
Lower castes now also aspire to match upper castes. While the Congress
party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have lashed out at the BSP
and SP for stooping low for electoral gains, the Election Commission
has reports from district administrations of Kaushambi and Moradabad
on the above issues.

Bharatiya Janata Party leaders said that this shows how desperate the
SP and BSP are to grab power. Congress leaders, on the other hand,
said that the promises made by the SP and BSP leaders are unethical
and open violation of model code of conduct.

New Delhi: Ailing but alert Amar Singh predicates Mayawati retaining
her control over power in UP post forthcoming assembly elections,even
though as he himself says, " I wish Congress form the government in
UP." In an interview with Ms. Anurradha Prasad for her weekly show
'Aamne-Samne',the former strongman of Samajwadi Party, Amar Singh says
that despite all out effort to grab the power in the last elections,
Samajwadi Party able to muster barely 142 seats. " That was the time
when SP had leaders from all castes and communities and also getting
support from stars like Sanjay Dutt. The situation has changed since
then," he felt. 'Will your Lok Manch support BSP in Uttar Pradesh ?'
"Of course, I support Mayawati as she has supported our cause in
taking the lead in carving out Purvanchal from Uttar Pradesh", Amar
Singh said, adding , " Even she took the lead in this regard purely on
political reasons, she did what we really wanted for the overall
development of backward Purvanchal region." Replying to another
question, Amar Singh said even though Mayawati has not given him time
for a meeting, he still feels that BSP has an edge over SP as there is
no charge against her (Mayawati) other than corruption. " This is not
possible for Congress to pin her down on this ground after it is also
under soup due to series of scams like 2G and CWG. 'Surveys predicting
photo-finish between SP and BSP in UP ?' Citing the results of
previous election surveys, Amar Singh said that in the last assembly
elections of Tamil Nadu, surveys predicated close fight between DMK
and AIADMK. However, those who did the survey eat the dust. 'Who would
be the Chief Minister of UP if Samajwadi Party gets the majority?' " I
believe that Mulayam Singh would give way to Akhilesh Yadav to become
the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. I feel there is nothing wrong if
he does that after all Congress too wants to anoint Rahul Gandhi as
the leader of the party. Sharad Pawar also feels the same way for her
daughter,Supriya Sule," Amar Singh told us. 'Will he rejoin Samajwadi
Party ?' " I can beg on the street, but it is unthinkable for me to
join SP once again," he made it clear. 'Did you ever thought that one
day you would have to stay behind Tihar Jail?' And taking a gentle dig
on the court order, Amar Singh said, " While all the accused in the
cash for vote case were granted the bail on a cash surety of Rs 1.50
lakh to Rs 2 lakh, I got the bail after surety of whopping Rs.1.50
crore. And it is true that I worked overtime along with Delhi Chief
Minister Sheela Dikshit to get the support of MPs from North-Eastern
