A dalit boy gives ray of hope in Jharsuguda

JHARSUGUGDA: It was a mixed year for the industrial district of Jharsuguda.

A Dalit boy Ashok Rohidas proved that humble background is no hurdle
to success. He rose from being a cowherd to a meritorious student,
completed his diploma engineering and joined a local private industry.

The year was marked by high-profile visits of Naveen Patnaik,
Governor M C Bhandare and Congress scion and AICC general secretary
Rahul Gandhi.

However, the district had its share of accidental deaths as three of
a family were electrocuted after high tension overhead wires snapped
and fell on them at village Kodaloi in Lakhanpur block. Six of a
wedding party died after the vehicle carrying them rammed into a
stationary truck on NH-200 near Sukhabandh village.

SCERT deputy director Srikant Routray alleged of molesting five girl
students of Gandagura Upper Primary School generated much heat and
condemnation leading to his subsequent arrest.

The district saw students' agitations for days after a college girl
was raped and murdered by one of her family acquaintances who was
later arrested by Brajrajnagar police.

Towards the end of the year, 10 passengers of the Samaleswari Express
suffered injuries after it collided with a goods train.

[ZESTCaste] Mayawati likely to sack more Ministers in image makeover

Mayawati likely to sack more Ministers in image makeover
Press Trust of India

In the past four days alone, the Chief Minister has sacked six of her
Ministers, many of whom were facing graft charges.
Lucknow, Dec. 29:

While the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Ms Mayawati, has set a record
of sacking 15 Ministers in order to refurbish her image, more heads
may roll ahead of the Assembly polls with as many as 13 Ministers
landing in the Lokayukta net.

In the past four days alone, the Chief Minister has sacked six of her
Ministers, many of whom were facing graft charges, leaving 35 members
in the Mayawati Ministry.

While Lokayukta Justice N.K Mehrotra has already recommended removal
of the Small Scale Industry Minister, Mr Chandra Dev Ram Yadav,
finding him guilty of indulging in corrupt practices, 13 Ministers,
including her close aide Mr Naseemuddin Siddiqui, are facing inquiry
from the anti-graft ombudsman.

Besides, many of the 28 MLAs facing Lokayukta inquiry are from the ruling BSP.
Series of sackings

Yesterday, Ms Mayawati sacked two Ministers, including the Minister of
State for Alternative Energy, Mr Akbar Hussain, and the Minister of
State for Science and Technology, Mr Yashpal Singh, on charges of
corruption and anti-party activities.

Earlier of Sunday, she had removed four Ministers, including the
Higher Education Minister, Mr Rakeshdhar Tripathi; the Agriculture,
Education and Research Minister, Mr Rajpal Tyagi; the Minister of
State for Backward Welfare (independent charge), Mr Awdhesh Verma; and
the Minister of State for Home Guard, Mr Hari Om. Though the
government did not give any reason for sacking them, sources said that
the step has been taken against these Ministers as they were mired in
controversy involving corruption charges.

Of the three, Mr Rakeskdhar Tripathi is facing Lokayukta probe in
alleged cases of corruption.

Earlier, five Ministers, including the Minister of State for Religious
Endowment, Mr Rajesh Tripathi; the Minister for Animal Husbandry, Mr
Avadhpal Singh; the Secondary Education Minister, Mr Rangnath Misra;
the Labour Minister, Mr Badshah Singh; and the Ambedkar Village
Development Minister, Mr Ratan Lal Ahirwar, were removed from their
posts.
NRHM scam

The NRHM scam and murder of two Chief Medical Officers and a deputy
CMO in jail earlier this year had led to removal of two senior
Ministers, Mr Babu Singh Kushwaha, a close confidant of the Chief
Minister, and Mr Anant Kumar Misra alias Antu.

Another Minister Mr Anand Sen Yadav was arrested after his name
cropped up in a rape and murder case while his colleague Mr Jamuna
Prasad Nishad, who later died, was also shown the door following a
criminal case against him.

It will be a seven-phased poll in Uttar Pradesh between February 4 and 28.

[ZESTCaste] Attack on Shankar to make Damodar HM

http://www.andhraheadlines.com/state/attack-on-shankar-to-make-damodar-hm-4-94019.html

Attack on Shankar to make Damodar HM

Hyderabad, Dec 29: Mala Mahanadu State president Karem Shivaji has
alleged that Madiga Reservations Porata Samiti founder-president Manda
Krishna Madiga was trying to make Deputy Chief Minister C. Damodar
Rajanarasimha as the Home Minister and was using Minister for
Handlooms Dr P. Shankar Rao as pawn in his political game.

Speaking to media persons here today, Shivaji criticized Krishna
Madiga for using attack on Dr Shakar Rao, which took place in Home
Minister Sabita Indra Reddy's constituency, to politicize the issue
and was trying to force the Home Minister to step down. He also
alleged that Krishna Madiga, who always opposes the Mala community
people, has suddenly extended his support to Dr Shankar Rao after the
attack took place. He also wondered as to why Krishna Madiga suddenly
supported Dr Shankar Rao. He criticized Krishna Madiga for organizing
"Dalita Athma Gowrava Sabha" to politically benefit his community
leader. Shivaji warned that the leaders would face severe consequences
in future if they use caste politics to benefit their political
career.

[ZESTCaste] Ilaiah plays the contrarian again

http://ibnlive.in.com/news/ilaiah-plays-the-contrarian-again/215960-60-121.html

Ilaiah plays the contrarian again
indianexpress Express News Service , The New Indian Express

HYDERABAD: The Telugu translation of 'Post-Hindu India' written by
Professor Kancha Ilaiah was released here on Wednesday. The book
highlights the contributions of the marginalised sections in the
society to science and technology.

Speaking on the occasion, Kancha Ilaiah waded directly into another
controversy, supporting the demand for a ban on the Bhagavad Gita in
Russia.

"I have been insisting that it is the most violent piece of mythology
written and no wonder that the Russians found the writings extremist
in nature," said the director of CSSEIP at the Maulana Azad National
Urdu University (MANUU).

The Lokpal committee members were also not spared by Ilaiah as he said
that the demand for representation from each section of minorities was
not adhered to in the formation of an impartial body.

"Mayawati is the new icon indicative of a post-Hindu nation where
power lies in the hands of a Dalit majority," said the writer who
highlights the contrast between 'faith' as ordained by Hinduism and
labour and know-how practised by the subaltern classes in the society.

In the same breath, he said he had never prayed to God. "But I
dedicate the book to Gods of different faiths and ideologies
including Karl Marx," he said. Titled 'Hindu Mataananthara Bhartha'
the volume has been translated by Prabhakar Mandara who is a Sahitya
Akademi awardee. The translation is brought out by EMSCO publishers .
