MUMBAI: The face-off between the government and Dalit leaders over the
proposed memorial for Dr B R Ambedkar in his home state in Maharashtra
continued to worsen with the Union Government expressing its desire to
part with less land than what had been demanded.

Dalit leaders are up in arms against the Union Government's decision
to allot merely 4 acres against the 12 acres of Indian United Mill
land in Mumbai that has been demanded by the Dalit community for the
construction of a memorial for Dr B R Ambedkar. Ever since December 6,
the death anniversary of Dr Ambedkar, Dalits have forcibly entered the
mill premises that is close to Chaitya Bhoomi in Mumbai where the
leader's remains have been consigned. Anandraj Ambedkar chief of
Republican Sena a wing of Bharipa Bahujan Mahasangh (Prakash Ambedkar)
and his 1000 odd followers have taken forcible possession of a portion
of INDU (India United) Mill in central Mumbai to erect the memorial of
Dr B R Ambedkar and other facilities for the followers of the Dalit
leader.

Republican Party of India (RPI) leader Ramdas Athavale said that he
will not allow any Union Minister to set foot in Maharashtra till the
land for the memorial is officially allotted for the memorial.
Athavale was responding to the statement made by Minister of State for
Textile Panaba Laxmi in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

[ZESTCaste] Dalit businessman breaks the glass ceiling

http://ibnlive.in.com/news/mumbai-dalit-businessman-breaks-the-barrier/212901-7.html

Business | Updated Dec 18, 2011 at 10:02am IST
Mumbai: Dalit businessman breaks the glass ceiling
Kajal IyerKajal Iyer, CNN-IBN

Mumbai: A Dalit businessman Ratilal Makhwana, who fought against caste
barriers in his profession, now owns three companies with an annual
turnover of a whopping 400 crores. When Makwana started his business
30 years ago, he least expected untouchability to be a hindrance in
his growth trajectory.

"When we got a government contract, manufacturers boycotted our
inauguration," Makhwana said.

Today Makwana owns three plastic goods companies with a turnover of
400 crore. At this trade fair organised by the 1000-member Dalit
Chamber of Commerce, Makwana and other successful Dalit entrepreneurs
are adding a new brand equity.

This new breed of Dalit capitalists who believe in being job-givers
and not job-seekers, Govind Gaikwad, who has invented a machine to
make cartons for pharma companies, feels it's high time the community
broadbases its thoughts from reservation.

"I have not availed benefits of any scheme. I didn't ask for any, nor
did the government come forward," Dalit entrepreneur Govind Gaikwad
said.

For this enterprising first-generation bunch of entrepreneurs,
capital, however, remains a problem. And they are looking at the new
procurement policy to make their job easier.

Dalit entrepreneurs say they are confident of making it on their own.
With the endorsement of Corporate India and stalwarts like Ratan Tata
and Adi Godrej pledging their support, setting up shop for these
entrepreneurs doesn't seem too difficult.

[ZESTCaste] Women entrepreneurs shine at Dalit trade fair

http://news.in.msn.com/business/article.aspx?cp-documentid=5686393

18/12/2011
Women entrepreneurs shine at Dalit trade fair

Kalpana Saroj, 50, is the daughter of a Dalit police constable in
Akola district of Maharashtra. Today she heads a Rs.3,000 crore
business enterprise.

Saroj was one of five women entrepreneurs at the first trade fair
organised by the Dalit Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DICCI)
who have fought not only social prejudices but also gender bias.

The trade show aimed to change the traditional image of Dalits - some
of India's most socio-economically marginalised - as always being
seekers and dependent on government aid. And these five women - Saroj,
Geeta Parmar, Aparna Kadam, Sana Ansari and Ishita Lal - had more to
be proud of in a field that has historically been a male-dominated
affair.

Saroj was pulled out of school and married off at the age of 12 only
to return home in a pathetic state due to the physical and mental
torment of her in-laws.

She attempted to join the police force at age 13, but failed. She
tried her hand at nursing and failed again. She then learned stitching
and sewing and made efforts to stitch clothes of her fellow villagers.
But this only antagonised the villagers who thought a 'returned bride'
was stepping beyond her social boundaries.

"At the age of 15, I moved to Mumbai and was lucky enough to be
sheltered by a benevolent Gujarati family. I then joined a hosiery
unit on a wage of Rs.2 per day and have never looked back since,"
Saroj told IANS.

At 22, Saroj married a small-time furniture manufacturer. She also
revived his ailing steel-cupboard manufacture business.

This mother of two then started a construction company. "In 1995, I
bought a piece of land at a throwaway price and managed to clear
encroachments and other litigation on it," Saroj told IANS.

In 1997, with the help of institutional finance, Saroj erected a
residential and commercial complex at a cost of Rs.4 crore and sold it
for a tidy profit.

Often referred to as someone who turns an ailing business to a
profitable one, Saroj took over Kamani Tubes. "A brand leader in
non-ferrous tubes, the company was started by Mumbai's well-known
industrialist Ramji Kamani, a Gandhian and close associate of
Jawaharlal Nehru," Saroj said.

Today Saroj's interests include various industries such as
construction, hotel, sugar, non-ferrous tubes and art galleries. She
is all set to enter the steel business soon.

Another such example is Parmar, who, along with her husband, has been
running a furniture manufacturing business since she married in 1971.
Though 61, she is as fit as a fiddle and puts in long hours to manage
the business in Mumbai while her husband manages the factory in
Gujarat.

"It took me some time to settle down in Mumbai. Out of sheer love for
the family, I went on to help my husband alongside taking care of my
three children," she said.

Also fighting her own battle in a man's world is Kadam, 28, who runs
her own event management firm alongside leather and jewellery
manufacturing businesses.

"Event management is a strictly male-dominated business. You will see
girls working for the firms, but not owning them," Kadam said.

"I still face dirty competition from my male counterparts in this
business. But with the support of my husband and family, I will make
it big here," she added.

An artist and freelance corporate designer Lal, however, thinks life
has been easier for her. "I am mainly into corporate branding,
marketing and rebranding and have given new faces to existing
businesses by way of my rebranding ideas," Lal said.

"I am glad that I have not faced as many problems in my career.
However, I have not been professionally trained in art. Hence, the
challenge for me is to emerge as the best in whatever I do," she said.

Also sitting quietly at her stall and attending to the visitors is
Sana Ansari, 36, who runs a small manufacturing unit that makes
scarves and 'hijabs' for Muslim women.

"It started about eight years back when my 20-day-old daughter Iqra's
head needed to be covered with the long scarf that women in our
community wear. I designed a scarf that could stay on her tiny head
and not fall off," Ansari said.

"A lot of women asked me where I got it from and that they also wanted
the scarf for their infant daughters. I started to make them on my own
initially and also started making 'hijabs'. Gradually, it prospered
and I hired people to help me with the tailoring."

Ansari supplies the 'hijabs' and scarves all over India and produces
over 10,000 pieces each year.

[ZESTCaste] Mayawati Tramples Opposition’s Charges

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/lucknow/Mayawati-Tramples-Oppositions-Charges/articleshow/11162250.cms

Mayawati Tramples Opposition's Charges
TNN | Dec 19, 2011, 04.39AM IST

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati defended her family and
party leaders against the corruption charges levelled by the
opposition.

The Bahujan Samaj Party chief said her rivals are making baseless
charges because they do not have any issue against her government in
the assembly election. She said people have to choose between BSP's
good governance on one hand and the misrule of Congress, goonda raj of
SP and communalism of BJP on the other.

"People need to exercise their franchise judiciously for the future of
the state," Maya said while addressing a large crowd at BSP's Muslim,
Kshatriya and Vaishya brotherhood convention here on Sunday.

Mayawati answered the opposition charges one after another. To the BJP
leaders, who have accused her family members of running ghost
companies for money laundering, she said they should to leave it to
the Income Tax department to find out such companies.

In reply to Rahul Gandhi's description of her government as an
elephant (election symbol of BSP) which feeds on currency notes, Maya
said Congress has lost its mental balance, that's why they are imaging
a money-eating-elephant. She also came down on Rahul for supporting
the FDI in retail sector.

"Traders (Vaishya community) should see that Rahul favours FDI in
retail, which, if implemented, would render crores of people jobless
and destroy small and cottage industry in the state," BSP chief said.

Describing the Congress as the fountainhead of corruption, Mayawati
said: "The number of scams under the UPA government expose the
corruption of the Congress."

Taking on the Samajwadi Party, she said traders have not forgotten how
mafia and criminals used to extort money from them under Mualyam's
rule. She also raised the issue of black money and said that neither
the Congressled UPA government nor the BJP-led NDA government did
anything to bring back black money stashed in foreign countries. This,
Maya said, proves that leaders of both the parties have accounts in
tax havens abroad.

Mayawati also blamed 40 years of Congress rule for the backwardness of
the state and large-scale migration of workers and labourers from UP
to other states for livelihood. Now, she said, Rahul Gandhi calls UP
migrants as beggars.

In comparison, Mayawati said, her government not only took action
against criminals and corrupt but also established the rule of law by
taking action even against her party leaders. Raising the issue of the
division of states, she said her government passed the resolution to
divide UP into four parts for better administration and development
but the Centre has not responded to it.

Demanding quota for poor among upper castes to woo Kshatriyas,
Mayawati said that her government has brought the best land
acquisition policy in the country and has worked for the all round
development of the state. "UP got first prize for high agriculture
productivity and urban management.

The state would be self sufficient in electricity by 2014 due to the
projects initiated by my government," she said. Mayawati accused the
Centre for neglecting UP. "I had recommended a separate bench of
Allahabad high court at Meerut in west UP and requested the Prime
Minister to take up the issue of floods in rivers originating from
Nepal but nothing has been done," she said.

The BSP chief described the right to food law proposed by the UPA
government as a promise which will be forgotten after elections. She
also gave a slogan to her party workers for the coming election -
"Chhadh Vipakhsi Ki Chhati Par, Button Daba Hathi Par".
