20-year-old dalit girl assaulted, gang raped

AHMEDABAD: Two men allegedly raped a 20-year-old dalit girl, who had
come to the city seeking a livelihood.
Police arrested six people including a woman and the two men who the
girl accused of raping her on Friday night in Sola area.
Sola police told TOI that Savita (name changed), who is from Amreli
used to work with a city-based film production company till four
months ago. She was out of the job for the last four months because of
a severe back pain and had been staying with her sister in Amreli. Her
father died two years ago and her mother remarried leaving her to fend
for herself.
She came to Ahmedabad a week ago looking for a job and came in contact
with Kajal Dave alias Meena. Dave let her stay with her at her home in
Bansidhar Aavas in Sola and promised to find her a job, said Sola
police. Savita told the police that on Friday Dave got drunk and told
her that she was into prostitution and invited Savita to join her.
The horrified girl walked out of the house with her belongings and
when she reached Navrangpura, around 9 pm, two youths abducted her on
a bike from near the old high court.
The girl identified the youths as Mayur and his friend Jaydev. Police
said Mayur, who works as a floor assistant at a mall, is Dave's
boyfriend and used to help her financially. Savita knew him as he used
to stay with Dave occasionally.
She said in her statement that he had got furious after she left and
pursued her. He took her to a house in Akanksha flats near Sola
bridge, which belonged to an autorickshaw driver, Jeetubhai.
She told police that the men beat her in the presence of Jeetubhai's
sons Aalap and Darshan, locked her up and raped her. Later Dave came
to the scene and got into an argument with the men. In the commotion,
Savita called up the police control room. When Mayur learnt of the
call, he broke her cell phone and robbed her of Rs 10,000. She however
managed to flee and landed in the custody of Sola police who had
reached the spot. Police detained the accused from the flat. The case
was transferred to the SC/ST cell of the city police since Savita is a
dalit.
R L Chavda, deputy superintendent of police, SC/ST cell, told TOI that
they have sought medical and forensic reports in the case and have
arrested Mayur, Jaydev, Aalap, Darshan, Jeetubhai and Meena. The
bedsheets and clothes found from the spot were handed over to forensic
experts for investigation. Police also found used condoms and
pornographic material from the spot. Jeetu's autorickshaw parked below
the flat was vandalized by the local residents after the incident came
to light on Saturday, said officials.
