Houses of Dalits set on fire in Bihar, 40 injured

Darbhanga (Bihar), Apr 15 (PTI) At least 24 houses belonging to Dalits
were set on fire by unknown people at Bishunpur in Bihar's Darbhanga
district injuring 40 people, following a clash between rival groups,
police said today."A group of people of Panchob village allegedly
attacked a Dalit locality at Harchanda village late last night and set
fire to the houses following an inter-caste marriage," Superintendent
of Police (SP) Vikas Vaibhav said.The injured were rushed to a
hospital, he said.A case has been registered against 98 people,
Vaibhav said, adding, so far 45 of them have been arrested.Elaborate
security arrangement has been put in place in Harchanda village as a
precautionary measure, the SP said.Director General of Police (DGP)
Neelmani described the situation in Harchanda village as under control
and said that strict action will be taken against the culprits. PTI

Tension in Bhilwara town after Dalits' entry in temple

Jaipur, Apr 14 : Tension prevailed in Haled town of Bhilwara district
in Rajasthan following minor clash between two groups over entry of
Dalits in a temple today.

According to official sources, a group of Dalits celebrating 120th
birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar entered
a temple.

This made a section of people annoyed who roughed up and scuffled with
them and their supporters who gathered there later.

About half a dozen people injured in the clash were admitted to
hospital, sources said adding that additional police force was
deployed as a precautionary measure.

Four to five persons were nabbed in this connection, they added.

Panchkula : The National Commission of Scheduled Castes (NCSC),
Chandigarh, on Friday took cognisance of the Newsline story '25 km
from city, Dalits have nowhere to go'. It sought a factual report on
Dalit repression from Superintendent of Police (SP) Maneesh Chaudhry
and Panchkula Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ashima Brar. The DC also issued
a press statement saying that she "has constituted a committee, to
resolve the prevailing tension between different groups of village
Batour, falling under Barwala Block in district Panchkula".

SC/ST federation registers its protest

KOCHI: The Kerala SC/ST Federation has protested against a few
officials sprinkling cow dung-laced water in the office and official
car of the former Registration IG A.K. Ramakrishnan.

Addressing the media here on Monday, president K.V. Kumaran said that
the issue would be taken up at the national level, including with
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and United Progressive Alliance
chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

A special delegation would meet them, after a rally is organised
across the State.

"We will also initiate legal action and the issue will be taken up
with the National Human Rights Commission," he said.

NEW DELHI: On Thursday, Hindu College student Naushad Ali Khan became
Naushad Gandhi. Businessman Bharat Bhushan Sharma changed his name to
Bharat Bhushan Bhratiya. Dr Siddharth Chaudhry chose to be called just
Siddharth. Around 50 doctors, students, businessmen and government
officials dropped their surnames on Thursday to contribute towards
making society casteless on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti. With
hands on their hearts, they took an oath to look beyond the divisions
of caste. So from Thursday onwards, they ceased to be Brahmins,
Kshatriyas, Vaishyas or Shudras. They were just free Indians.

"Castes still divide people in India. Back at my village in Almora in
Uttaranchal, we still have two wells - one for the people of 'lower
castes' and the other for the rest. It's time to end such
discrimination and it can be done only by starting a movement. I have
taken the first step by giving up my caste," said Devendra Diwan, who
was Diwan Singh Negi before taking the oath. Brought together by NGO
Swaraj over a period of one year, these people will now advertise
their new names in the newspaper and get the old names changed on
necessary documents.
