Dalits denied pattas, driven out: Study

CHENNAI: A study conducted by the Tamil Nadu Untouchability
Eradication Front (TNUEF) has revealed that families belonging to
Scheduled Castes in Chennai have been struggling for the past several
decades to get pattas for their lands.

The report on the field study done in 31 localities in Chennai between
September and October was released on Wednesday by TNUEF president P
Sampath and general secretary K Samuelraj. Denial of patta was a
primary problem faced by them, the report stated. Their demand for
pattas has not yielded results despite struggling for the past
half-a-century. They have been fighting for pattas in many areas,
including Kumarasami Rajapuram and M S Nagar in Egmore, Korukkupet,
Sikkanderpalayam, Perambur, Mettupalayam, Kolathur SRP Colony and
Dharmapuram.

Under the guise of removing encroachments, the oppressed people were
being driven out of their traditional residential areas. Also, the
benefits of urbanisation have not reached them. There were no adequate
toilet facilities forcing them to defecate in the open, the report
stated. The facilities in the hostels meant for Scheduled Caste
students too were appalling.

Dalits were being driven out of places where they had traditionally
lived. They were being forced to live in tenements of just 120 sq ft
size in new residential areas in Sholinganullur and Semmancherry, the
report pointed out.

[ZESTCaste] To regain OBC votes, SP looks to Gorakhpur

http://www.indianexpress.com/news/to-regain-obc-votes-sp-looks-to-gorakhpur/731057/

To regain OBC votes, SP looks to Gorakhpur

Sanjay Singh Posted online: Thu Dec 30 2010, 03:25 hrs
Lucknow : The Samajwadi Party's decision to hold its three-day state
conference in Gorakhpur beginning February 10 has much to do with its
chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's concern about his declining significance
as a leader of Other Backward Castes (OBC) and Muslims in eastern
Uttar Pradesh.

For the last two decades, the region has been a major source of
political strength for the party. At present, 50 per cent MLAs in the
SP legislature party are from eastern UP. Out of the 22 seats it has
in the Lok Sabha, nine MPs were elected from this region in the 2009
elections.

The selection of Gorakhpur as venue comes at a time when strong
regional political outfits like Peace Party of India (PPI), Janwadi
Party (JP), Bhartiya Samaj Party and Ati Pichhara Varg Mahasangh are
badly damaging SP's prospects in the area. While PPI enjoys good
support among the Muslims, particularly the poor, JP and Bhartiya
Samaj Party have their political bases in Chauhan and Rajbhar castes.

Things have worsened for SP in the wake of expelled party leader Amar
Singh's ongoing padyatara in favour of a separate Purvanchal state
comprising 147 Assembly and 28 Lok Sabha seats. Mulayam has always
opposed such an idea.

The last time SP had held its state conference in eastern UP was in
1999. The meet was organised in Deoria district. "In the last one
decade, it had preferred places like Agra, Meerut and Kanpur," said a
leader.

Against such a backdrop, the SP is finding it difficult to restore its
lost votebank. According to insiders, through this state session, the
party aims to mobilise its workers among the OBC and minority
community. During the meet, it plans to give due importance to all
leaders representing the region.

Admitting that the emergence of regional outfits in the region is a
source of worry for the leadership, party MLA Ambika Choudhari said:
"By selecting Gorakhpur, the party has certainly sent out a strong
message about its concerns for the problems faced by the people here."
The party will pass its political-economic resolution at the state
session, he added.

"By the time the 2012 Assembly elections will begin, the regional
outfits will not remain such important political forces. It was a
phase and such outfits came up. We will make the people realise that
such forces are meant for damaging our mission to end Mayawati Raj,"
said party spokesperson Rajendra Choudhari.

The leaders of the regional outfits maintained that Mulayam's decision
to hold the state conference in Gorakhpur is a reflection of the
party's desperation to bring back OBC voters into its fold.

"The Gorakhpur session is not going to give any relief to Mulayam
Singh Yadav. Gone are the days when he was considered to sole leader
of OBC in this region. His politics is confined to only a particular
caste," said Dr Sanjay Chauhan, president of Janwadi Party. His party
had bagged good votes in Lok Sabha seats of eastern UP.

Bhartiya Samaj Party president Om Prakash Rajbhar said Mulayam has
ditched the poor people belonging to the OBC. "Time has changed and
one cannot fool the voters," he said. According to him, regional
outfits like PPI, Janwadi Party and Bhartiya Samaj Party have joined
hands to contest the 2012 Assembly elections.

The Bhartiya Samaj Party had fielded 21 candidates in the last Lok
Sabha elections and bagged over 50,000 voted in constituencies like
Chandauli, Ghosi and Varanasi.

The president of PPI, Ayub, is also not surprised by Mulayam's move.
"We are not a threat to anyone. We want to ensure smooth transfer of
power in the hands of the people who are really poor," he said.

[ZESTCaste] Reservations on Quota at JNU?

http://www.mid-day.com/news/2010/dec/301210-News-Delhi-Students-protest-OBC-students-court-order.htm

Reservations on Quota at JNU?
By: Vatsala Shrangi Date: 2010-12-30 Place: Delhi

Student associations of Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU) are back
demonstrating as the varsity has failed to admit students from the
Other Backward Classes (OBC) category despite a recent court verdict
directing it to do the same. Student leaders with their groups came
out shouting slogans, carrying placards and posters condemning the
university administration.

Over the past three years, progressive sections of the entire JNU
community have been striving for the proper implementation of the
legally mandated OBC reservations in the campus. Yet again students in
the OBC category have been denied admission as against the High Court
verdict, which declared the university admission criteria faulty.

"This is not the way a central university works. It is worse than any
dictatorial institution in the world. There is no authority, no
members in the administration, the VC is on extension. The university
cannot do this to students after the court verdict. This is complete
anarchy; we don't know who is running the university," said Vismay
Bose, Vice-President, All India Students' Association (AISA).

"Should a central university create such an unprecedented situation
wherein every student eligible for admission is forced to move the
courts, fight a long legal battle, and prove once more that JNU is
legally in the wrong?" said a morose Usham Rojio Singh, the student
who successfully moved the Delhi High Court in order to be able to
study in JNU.
Another day in court

Instead of implementing the HC verdict and moving towards modifying
its policy, the JNU administration chose to challenge this verdict in
the High Court. Subsequently, on December 23, 2010, the HC once again
upheld its 7th September verdict and dismissed the JNU review
petition.
"This is a highly dangerous trend, with far-reaching repercussions for
JNU's transparent and democratic decision-making process," said
Sucheta Singh, from Students Federation of India (SFI).

On reading this mail, I promptly I talked to Dr. Milind Jiwane on his mobile. He is well as usual, nothing happened any untowards as narrated in the mail. He told me that he had received many phone calls and aware them of my hacking of email ID. The mail is FAKE; hence the same may be ignored.
I had also undergone the same situation twice. Anyhow I could retrieve my email ID due to my email ID data (at the time of creating e-mail ID) was available with me. Both time, the hackers hailed from South Africa.
Anyway, I request on behalf of Dr. Jiwane Sir that all readers of the group and others concerned social and dhamma groups etc to ignore this FAKE email.

Hi,

Apologies for having to reach out to you like this, but I made a quick trip to London,United Kingdom and had my bag stolen from me with my passport and credit cards in it. The embassy is willing to help by authorizing me to fly without my passport, I just have to pay for a ticket and settle Hotel bills. Unfortunately, I can't have access to funds without my credit card, I've made contact with my bank but they need more time to come up with a new one. I was thinking of asking you to lend me some quick funds that I can give back as soon as I get in. I really need to be on the next available flight.

I can forward you details on how you can get money to me. You can reach me via email or the hotel's help desk, +447045749898. I hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks
Dr. Milind Jiwane
