MANGALORE: The Dakshina Kannada district unit of Karnataka Dalit
Sangharsh Samiti (DSS-Bhimavada) has demanded that chief minister B S
Yeddyurappa accommodate senior Dalit leader and MLC D S Veeraiah in to
his cabinet. The Dalit community in the state has been getting a raw
deal from political parties that ruled the state so far and have been
giving them mere assurances without translating it in to reality, DSS
leaders said.

P Keshava, state committee member in a release here stated that
elected representatives from Dalit community are sidelined when it
comes to giving them ministerial berths. Terming the move by present
BJP government under Yeddyurappa to continue with this practice of
discrimination against Dalit leaders as regrettable, Keshava demanded
that CM show his pro-Dalit stand by inducting Veeraiah in to his
cabinet.

Keshava also criticised the state government for its decision to
transfer IAS officer V Ponnuraj as deputy commissioner of Shimoga
district. Listing out the various development initiatives taken by
Ponnuraj during his 22-month tenure as DC of DK district, Keshava
stated all like-minded Dalit organisations condemn this administrative
move, and blamed various powerful lobbies behind the departure of
Ponnuraj.

Noting that there are moves to shift the office of the superintendent
of police from Mangalore in wake of the city police commissionerate
being set up here, Keshava stated that all prominent government
offices in Dakshina Kannada district are located in the city. It does
not make sense to shift the office of the SP of DK Rural district
outside the city, he stated adding a memorandum has been sent to the
government in this regard.

Jajpur (Orissa), Oct 20 Two children belonging to dalit community were
allegedly denied admission at the anganwadi school at Oddiso village
in Orissa's Jajpur district.

The incident came to light after victims mother brought it to the
notice of the authorities.

According to the complaint filed with the secretary, Women and Child
Development department and a copy of which was also given to the
district collector by Tulasi Sethy of Oddiso village stated that her
children were denied admission into the village Anganwadi centre as
they belong to Dalit community.

Jajpur Collector Pramod Kumar Mohanty said an enqiry into the incident
has been ordered.

The Anganwadi worker being an upper caste lady allegedly declined to
admit the duo on the ground of untouchability.

Punjab, October 19: A dalit couple on Saturday allegedly committed
suicide by jumping into a canal near Daudhar village under Badhnikalan
police station of Moga district in Punjab.

The couple was under dipression due to some ailment and poverty since
a long time, the police said.

Harnek Singh and his wife Manjeet Kaur, residents of Rasulpur, jumped
into the Abohar branch canal.

Their bodies were found on Sunday evening, the police added.

The couple had seven children and their financial condition was very weak.

They were suffering from an ailment and were unable to afford costly
treatments, the residents said.
In another case, a couple committed suicide in Madhavram in Chennai dy
drinking poison on Saturday saddened by the death of their 10 years
old child.
The chid demised after a knee operation six months ago.

Barabanki: A Dalit man's face was blackened by villagers in the
Barabanki district for allegedly trying to molest a village girl.

Babloo Rawat, the accused was tied to a tree and a garland of shoes
was hung around his neck as a punishment for his alleged offence.

He also allegedly tried to strangle her after attempting to outrage her modesty.

Babloo is alleged to be a serial offender who has complaints regarding
the same against him in the past. The villagers had complained about
his conduct to the village elders in the past as well.

"An FIR has been registered against Babloo," said the circle officer
of the area Deependra Nath Chaudhary.

The villagers who beat him have not been booked as the accused has not
given any written complaint against them.

Contempt petition brings movie on Ambedkar out of cans

A contempt petition filed in the Madras High Court had brought out the
Tamil version of the movie 'Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar' out of the cans.
The original movie directed by Jabbar Patel in which Malayalam actor
Mamooty donned Ambedkar's role got entangled in red tape and remained
in the can for more than five years.

The English version of the movie which was produced jointly by
Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and government of
Maharashtra was released in the year 2000.

In December 2006 the government of Tamil Nadu sanctioned rupees ten
lakhs for dubbing the movie into Tamil. In spite of the amount
sanctioned, the movie never hit the screens. S. Sathiachandran,
advocate and Dalit activist in March sent a representation to the
government of Tamil Nadu to take necessary action to release the movie
on April 14, on the eve of Ambedkar's birth day. When there was no
response from the government, Sathiachandran filed a writ petition in
the Madras High Court seeking a mandamus to the General Manager of the
National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) to release the movie. The
High Court of Madras in its order on April 30, directed NFDC to take
necessary steps, expeditiously to release the movie within a period of
four weeks.

Since the movie has not been released so far, Sathiachandran, moved a
contempt petition before the Madras High Court to initiate contempt
proceedings against both NFDC and the distributor for their failure to
comply with the Court's order.

In his affidavit filed before the High Court today, D. Ramakrishnan,
Deputy General Manager today informed the Court that the Tamil version
of the movie on Ambedkar would be released in theatres on the December
6, which happens to be the death anniversary of Dr. Ambedkar.

Ramakrishnan, in his affidavit apologised for his failure to comply
with the Court's earlier orders and contended that the analog and
digital prints of the movie are being collected from the previous sole
distributor and all steps would be taken to release the movie on
December 6.

When Law et al. News spoke to S. Sathiachandran, the petitioner, he
said it is unfortunate that he had to knock the doors of the Court for
releasing the movie and move a contempt petition for
non-implementation of earlier orders. However, he expressed hope that
the NFDC would keep up its promise and the Tamil version of the movie,
will be released as submitted before the court.
