Jat protests flare up again; bank set on fire

Hisar: The situation across Haryana remains tense. Protesting Jats
continued with blockades in parts of Hisar and nearby districts today.
Many see the amnesty by the government as a sign of weakness,
prompting a virtual free for all, with many protesters attacking and
looting banks and private property as well.

Jat villagers remain belligerent defying a call to stop violence from
their own leaders. The protesters blocked the national highway linking
Delhi to Hisar for several hours today.

Ajit Singh a Jat villager from Hisar said, "We will continue this till
the situation is not sorted out and we don't get the OBC status".

But that's not all that is at stake. The rioting, since Monday, has
also been accompanied by looting. A State Bank of India branch, less
than 300 meters from the army Cantonment, was set on fire by rioters
after the mob took out and looted the ATM machine.

Even a private textile mill was not spared. Uday Singh, security
in-charge of the HP Cotton Mills in Hisar said, "1,500-2,000 people
came, beat up the guards, and then set the factory on fire. They also
stole our computers from the offices."

Several vehicles were set on fire along the highway.

And what's fuelling the protests further is what many see as the
buckling under by the state government which in a desperate bid to end
the violence announced an amnesty on Tuesday for all those who were
involved in rioting. The government has also suspended the Hisar SP
Subhash Yadav and filed murder charges against him for ordering police
action in which a youth, who was part of the mob, was killed.

The Sangharsh Samiti has declared a truce with the government but it
seems that other Jat leaders don't want to back down just yet. And
with police forces already spread thin, the worry is that the fire and
protests from Hisar could spread to other districts as well.

CHANDIGARH: Delhi government might have to tackle a different flood
during the Commonwealth Games if the reservation tangle of Jats is not
resolved by October 3.

Jat community bodies, agitating for reservation under OBC category,
plan to buy tickets to CWG in bulk to facilitate disruption of the
games at different venues.

The Jat plan is simple — why clash with security forces outside CWG
venues when they can enter venues easily and then play the spoilsport.

"As it is, over 15 lakh security personnel would be pressed into
action for the CWG, whereas we have a population of five crore in
India. Also, we have enough resources to purchase tickets in bulk. We
may boycott by not making it to venue leaving it almost empty or can
protest there," said Yash Pal Malik, national president of Jat
Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti.

Speaking to The Times of India, he said, "We would wait till October
3, the deadline given by us to Central and Haryana governments to add
us in OBC quota. Else, we would go ahead with our agitation plan.''

Referring to their action plan, Samiti's Haryana state president Hawa
Singh Sangwan, said Jats were willing to take on anyone to get the
reservation and were in no mood to relent, even if it led to a huge
embarassment with CWG getting disrupted. Sangwan said that the
agitating Jat groups also have plans to cut supplies to Delhi and
create all kinds of obstructions during the games. Haryana and Uttar
Pradesh are the main suppliers for provisions and milk products.

All India Jat Mahasabha (AIJM), which also has plans to agitate on the
quota issue before and during CWG, has decided not to indulge in any
kind of violence. "Our agitation began long ago. We would oppose the
Queen's Baton and CWG, but in a peaceful manner," said AIJM state
president Om Parkash Maan.

Meanwhile, greeting the Queen's Baton on September 26 with black flags
at Sirsa would be Jat Aarakshan Sangharsh Samiti's first protest in
their run up to CWG. "We would line up on both sides of the road from
Sirsa to Delhi, waving black flags till the Baton reaches Delhi,''
said Hawa Singh Sangwan, Haryana head of the Samiti.

Maadara swami visits Brahmin colony

Mysore, Sept 16, DH News Service: Maadara Channaiah Swamiji of Maadiga
Gurupeetha in Chitradurga was accorded a warm welcome at Krishna Dhama
–– where Pejawar Seer Vishwesha Teertha is staying currently as part
of his Chaturmasya celebrations –– and also at Krishnamurthypuram,
where he undertook a padayatra and visited some families.

Following a padayatra by Pejawar seer to the Dalit colonies in the
city, Maadaara Channaiah Swamiji had offered to go on a padayatra into
Brahmin colonies as part of his attempt to steer the social change
further.

He arrived in the city on Tuesday night and stayed as a guest at the
residence of a Brahmin family. Next morning, before setting off on the
padayatra, he came to Krishna Dhama and met the Pejawar Seer.

During the interaction, Pejawar seer stressed on the fact that Dalits
were indeed part of Hindu religion and had to stay as members of the
faith and Maadara Channaiah Swamiji said Dalits had bigger issues such
as dignity, discrimination, hunger and livelihood as their priority
and hence, conversion was something that was not of immediate
importance.

Minister Suresh Kumar joined the padayatra for a brief while at 8 am
when it began.
Post-padayatra, the Maadara seer along with Pejawar seer addressed the
gathering at Rama Mandira and said he was happy with the enthusiasm
among people to bring about the social shift.

Later, he addressed a gathering of members of Samarasya Vedike and
Rashtriya Swayamsevaka Sangha at RSS main office Madhava Kripa here.

Dalits have bigger issues at hand: Channaiah swamiji

Mysore: When the much awaited meeting between Pejawar mutt seer
Vishvesha Teertha Swamiji and Maadaara Channaiah Swamiji of Maadiga
Gurupeetha, the discussion centred around the welfare of Dalits as
against the overall welfare of Hindu dharma.

While Maadaara Channaiah Swamiji maintained that Dalits had bigger
issues at hand with their dignity and lives being threatened with
repeated attacks on the community members, Pejawar seer said
conversion into other faiths would not serve as an answer to the
existing problems.

In an interaction meeting with Pejawar seer Vishvesha Theertha
Swamiji at Krishna Dhama, Pontiff of Maadiga community stood his
ground and said conversion into Christianity or Buddhism was
'individual preference'. "Issue of conversion is not of paramount
importance for Dalits, as they feel they are being discriminated
against, by upper castes all the time," he said.

In all his concern towards Dalits, Pejawar Seer, who has held
padayatras in Dalit colonies in an attempt to end centuries of
discrimination and humiliation against Dalits, offered to give 'Bhakti
Dikshe' to Dalits. This would be an attempt to restrain them from
converting to Christianity or Buddhism either by force or through
enticement in view of protecting Hindu culture, as conversion would
put an end to their native culture by imposing its own practices on
them. To a query pertaining to the attempt being a move to strengthen
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) vote bank, Pejawar seer clarified that,
his initiative was devoid of any such motives. "I am not responsible
if politicians use it to their benefit," he asserted. Prior to that,
prominent members of Brahmin community in the leadership of MLA S A
Ramadas welcomed Maadaara Channaiah Swamiji at Krishna Dhama, where
the Pejawar seer is camping as part of his Chaturmasya celebrations.

Villoor Dalits facing peculiar problem

The Dalits of Villoor village under Kalligudi taluk near Thirumangalam
in Madurai district are facing a peculiar problem as they are not
allowed to ride two-wheelers along the street (Periasamy Koil Street)
of caste Hindus.

Those who defy these norms are being attacked and ostracised by the
dominant caste in the village. A few villagers and a shopkeeper on the
street said that the practice had been there for a long time.

In the recent past, a Dalit youth, G. Thangapandian (24), who had
completed teacher training and spent most of his time in urban living
conditions, invited the wrath of caste Hindus when he rode his
motorcycle through Periasamy Koil Street. The caste Hindus interrupted
him and questioned his behaviour. A minor scuffle ensued and he was
allegedly beaten up by a caste Hindu youth. When Thangapandian tried
to file a complaint at the Villoor police station, he was prevented
from doing so by caste Hindus.

Following this a peace committee meeting was called for by the caste
Hindus to which Thangapandian's brother G. Murugan was invited.
Fearing reprisal, he avoided the meeting and as a result, the caste
Hindus laid a siege to a town bus on September 4, demanding that
Dalits should come for talks.

However, the caste Hindus, with the intervention of police, later
agreed for an alternative route to the Dalits, which is circuitous.
The officials in the police department said that the practice of not
allowing two-wheelers was age old, which had been internalised by the
Dalits and nobody stopped them from riding two–wheelers but they
themselves had refrained from doing so.

The Revenue Department officials, when contacted, said that the police
had conducted talks with the villagers and once "they send the report
we will forward it to the Special Tahsildar, Adi Dravidar Welfare, for
perusal." One of the officials said that the problem of separate
routes for Dalits had already been an issue in 2000 and now it had
come up again.

Two routes have been identified by the Revenue Department. Eastern
Puliyampatti Vilakku is a route which has been suggested by the Dalits
but the problem is that the route passes through patta lands of the
caste Hindus and so it is a difficult task for the administration and
the other route, the Maravapatti route, could be cleared for the use
of Dalits.

The village has a major population of a dominant OBC caste and Dalits
are in miniscule number. They are secluded in the eastern part of the
village (Kizhakku Theru). Most of the Dalits are part of agricultural
labour force and a few among them are engaged in making broomsticks
during off-season.

SC/ST panel issues notice to VC of UAS

Bangalore: The Karnataka State Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes
Commission has issued notice to the Vice-Chancellor of the University
of Agricultural Sciences for keeping promotions of 29 assistant and
associate professors in abeyance.

Commission member M. Kumbaiah said in his notice that promotions had
been given to 29 people only after the commission had directed the
university to do so. The promotions and revised salaries were given a
month ago.

However, now with the promotions kept in abeyance once again, Mr.
Kumbaiah has said that the action of the university attracts
provisions of the Atrocities Act.
