Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Thursday criticised Communist Party
of India (Marxist) on the Natarajar temple and Uthapuram issues.

Addressing a function to mark the 107th birth anniversary of former
Chief Minister K. Kamaraj here, Mr Karunanidhi said that the CPI (M)
was organising an agitation to demand that the path to the temple in
Chidambaram which was said to have been used by Nandanar, a Saivaite
saint, should be thrown open. The agitation was not for Nandanar but
to create deliberately an obstacle to the execution of good schemes,
the Chief Minister said.

On the Uthapuram wall issue, he recalled how the wall, which separated
a Dalit colony from caste Hindus for years in Uthapuram village of
Madurai district, was demolished [in May 2008] on his instruction.
Caste Hindus, who were initially upset over the move, were later
mollified and the issue was sorted out, the Chief Minister said.

Alluding to the recent CPI (M) agitation on the matter, he said that
for some parties, if any issue had been resolved, they would become
irrelevant. This was why they were instigating people in the area.

The Chief Minister also recalled how his government ensured the
successful conduct of panchayat elections in Keeripatti, Pappapatti,
Nattarmangalam and Kottakanchiyendal villages and it organised a
function in Chennai, under the chairmanship of CPI leader R.
Nallkannu, to felicitate elected chairpersons of the villages.

Mr Karunanidhi inaugurated the execution of developmental works
undertaken by the School Education department at a cost of about Rs.
188.94 crore. He distributed appointment orders to five
differently-abled persons on their recruitment as secondary teachers.

Thangam Thennarasu, School Education Minister, said that in the last
four years, 569 primary schools were opened while 2,626 middle
schools, 630 high schools and 520 higher secondary schools were
upgraded. A primary school had been set up for every one km; middle
school for every three km and high school for every five km.

K.V.Thangkabalu, Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, praised the
Chief Minister for taking steps to perpetuate the memory of Kamaraj.

Girl alleges rape, lover held
Shiv Sharma, TNN, Jul 17, 2010, 07.08am IST

AMBALA: Feeling betrayed in love, a 20-year-old Dalit girl got a case
of rape registered against her lover with the Naraingarh police on
Thursday. Cops arrested him the same day. The girl and the boy used to
work in a factory at Tirlokpur of Himachal Pradesh.

The girl of Bada village and an upper caste boy, Gurmeet, of Husaini
village had eloped on June 5. They returned to the boy's house on July
13.

In her complaint, she alleged that when she asked the boy to marry
her, he and his family refused. Disappointed, the girl narrated her
ordeal to the sarpanch of Husaini.

To settle the matter amicably, the sarpanch called a panchayat at
Naraingarh on Thursday. It was attended by both the families.

However, during the course of negotiations, heated words were
exchanged between the girl and boy

[ZESTCaste] Japanese journalist refused visa extension

Japanese journalist refused visa extension

Monday, July 12, 2010 7:34:27 PM by IANS

New Delhi, July 12 (IANS) The Indian government has refused to renew
the visa of Shogo Takahashi, the New Delhi bureau chief of Japan
Broadcasting Corporation (NHK), with the broadcaster expressing
surprise at the decision.
After making repeated attempts to get his visa renewed, the
46-year-old Takahashi, who had been the bureau chief since 2008,
returned home Sunday.

A NHK spokesperson said that the broadcaster was surprised at the
Indian government's abrupt decision.

The broadcaster has not, however, given up and written to the Indian
embassy in Tokyo requesting a meeting to discuss the matter. The reply
is being awaited, sources said.

According to sources, the external affairs ministry was upset over
some biased content in some of the NHK's documentary programmes.

The NHK's coverage of the Lok Sabha elections last year, with its
focus on role of caste system in Indian politics, did not go down well
with Indian officials, sources said.

Takahashi had contributed to the documentary series 'Indo no Shogeki'
(the impact of India) which was broadcast from 2007-2009.

Surprisingly, the refusal to renew Takahashi's visa comes weeks after
a Japanese journalist had complained to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
at a nationally televised press conference in May that it was very
difficult for foreign journalists working in India to get
accreditation from the Press Information Bureau (PIB).

"I am very sorry to hear this," Manmohan Singh had said, and assured
that he will "ask the relevant minister to look into it".

Reports on poverty? Japan scribe shown door

OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT
New Delhi, July 16: A Japanese journalist has been given marching
orders for his allegedly biased and "consistently negative reporting"
about India.

Government sources said the Centre had refused to extend Japan
Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) journalist Shogo Takahashi's visa
because his reports focused "excessively" on poverty and caste system
in India.

Takahashi, 46, returned home after working as NHK's New Delhi bureau
chief since early 2008. Sources said he was told a month ago that the
Indian government was unhappy with his reports and that his visa would
not be extended.

The sources alleged that Takahashi often filmed documentaries without
taking permission from the government, as all foreign journalists are
required to do. He is also believed to have misused permission on
occasions by shooting documentaries different from plans submitted to
the government, and even filmed high-security defence installations.

The decision to not extend Takahashi's visa was taken jointly by the
ministries of external and home affairs. His employers have expressed
surprise at the Indian government's apparently "abrupt" decision.

NHK has sought an appointment with Indian embassy officials in Tokyo,
a spokesperson said. It may approach the Japanese foreign ministry to
take up the matter with Indian counterparts.

A foreign correspondent said NHK's coverage of the 2009 Lok Sabha
elections had greatly displeased Indian officials. "They were upset
that the documentary focused overtly on the role of caste system in
the Indian electoral system," the correspondent said.

Takahashi was a contributor to a documentary series, Indo no Shogeki
(The Impact of India), broadcast from 2007-2009.
