MANGALORE At a meeting of Dalit leaders held in the city on December
14, Wednesday

under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner Chennappa Gowda, RE :
several Dalit leaders made

a vehement appeal to the authorities to give Dalits an opportunity to
serve food at the temples

under government control.

A Dalit leader participating in the meeting said Dalits were given
opportunity only to remove the

leaves after devotees have food in temples like Kateel and
Subrahamanya which are under the

control of the Mujrai Department. Henceforth, Dalits should also be
allowed to serve food, he

urged. He further said Koraga or Dalit community men also do not get a
chance to be trustees of

the temples though Marathi Naika community men are chosen for the
post. Exploitation of Dalits

is continuing through temples," he added.

Another Dalit leader Shekhar Belthangady who spoke at the meeting said
the Deputy

Commissioner was directly to be blamed for the attack on a Dalit
leader at Subrahamanya as he

had revoked the earlier order banning Made Snane.

Several Dalit leaders and representatives of various organizations
participated in the meeting.
