Re: [ZESTCaste] Impact of discrimination still haunts Dalits

The surest and easiest way to do away with discrimination is to use BSP by handing over the Master key to it. Voting to the Elephant symbol iis the only way out.
The educated Sarvajan Samaj should work towards this end, instaed of wasting their time and energy in other activities.

Re: [ZESTCaste] Mayawati's wealth (Letter to the Editor)

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and BSP supremo Mayawati said on
Friday that it was shameful to make comments on her assets as she had
been honest unlike many other politicians who were dishonest and had
stashed away ill-gotten wealth in foreign countries.

Mayawati has declared her assets worth over Rs 80 crore in the
affidavit filed along with her nomination papers for election to the
state Legislative Council. She also challenged her detractors to
disclose their current assets as well as their worth before entering
or holding public office. She said it was because of such politicians
that billions of rupees kept in foreign banks would be come back to
India.

Mayawati said that she had been informing the Income-Tax Department
about her assets from time to time in a transparent manner and the
Opposition leaders' comments in the media were not only laughable, but
also showed to what extent they could stoop in a bid to regain lost
political ground.

Singling out Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, Mayawati said
before entering politics, he had only a few 'bighas' of land and a
bicycle, but now, he and his relatives had unaccounted wealth.

Mayawati's wealth

It is agonising that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has amassed
assets worth Rs.88 crore, as declared by her, during her political
career so far. Here is a fit case for investigating how she came by
this wealth. The public have the right to know the truth.

[ZESTCaste] Mayawati has change of heart, won't deny criminals ticket

Mayawati has change of heart, won't deny criminals ticket

Deepak Gidwani / DNAMonday, May 31, 2010 0:29 IST

Lucknow: BSP chief Mayawati took many by surprise when she announced
last week that all party MLAs would be repeated as candidates in the
2012 assembly election.

"Opposition leaders are spreading canards through the media that MLAs
with criminal records will be dropped," she said at a meeting of party
leaders at her official residence. "No BSP MLA will be denied ticket,"
she asserted.

Mayawati came up with an ingenious reason for giving tickets to
criminal MLAs. "Criminal background of such MLAs can be overlooked as
they have not committed crime after joining BSP… they will neither be
expelled from the party nor denied ticket," she said, drawing a round
of applause from the meeting.

Mayawati has faced embarrassment on several occasions due to the
presence of criminals in her party. She had announced recently that
criminal elements would be weeded out from BSP.

However, she seems to have had a change of heart after reports
claimedmany MLAs, fearing stringent action and denial of ticket, were
planning to desert the party.

At the meeting, Mayawati also announced another term in Rajya Sabha
for BSP general secretary and confidant Satish Chandra Misra.

The other BSP candidates for the biennial election are Ambeth Rajan
(already in Rajya Sabha), Jugal Kishore, Salem Ansari, SP Singh
Baghel, Narendra Kashyap and Rajpal Saini.

The Uttar Pradesh chief minister also announced eight candidates,
including herself, for the biennial legislative council election.

[ZESTCaste] Amar warms up to Mayawati

Amar warms up to Mayawati

May 31st, 2010
DC Correspondent

New Delhi, May 30: Warming up to the UP Chief Minister and BSP
supremo, Ms Mayawati, with an apology, the expelled Samajwadi Party
leader, Mr Amar Singh on Sunday charged leaders of his former party
for implicating him in a Rs 500 crore financial fraud case.

Claiming this in his latest blog post, Mr Singh tendered an apology to
Ms Mayawati and stated that he was "ashamed" for attacking her. Mr
Singh goes on to offer his wholesome praise to Ms Mayawati's
administration and lists police recruitment as a major achievement.

Also reaching out to the Congress, the expelled SP leader added that
"he felt shameful for accusing Ms Mayawati and the Congress" for
implicating him in the fraud case.

Mr Singh's attempt to warm up to the BSP supremo is being seen as his
most desperate attempt to keep himself politically relevant in UP,
after his newly launched "Lokmanch" received a lukewarm response from
the people of Uttar Pradesh.

Claiming that he was revealing shocking news, Mr Singh alleged in the
blog that it was "the brother and son of the SP chief, Mr Mulayam
Singh Yadav, who got him framed in the Rs 500 crore financial fraud
case."

In October last year, an FIR was lodged against Mr Singh and his wife,
Ms Pankaja, at Babupurva police station in Kanpur. He said that an SP
office bearer was paid Rs 7 crore for the purpose.

Not Mayawati, Akhilesh framed me in fraud case: Amar

Express news service Posted: May 31, 2010 at 1004 hrs

New Delhi Expelled Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh on Sunday mounted
a frontal attack against SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's son and Lok
Sabha MP Akhilesh Yadav, alleging that he was behind the case of Rs
500 crore financial fraud registered against him in Kanpur last year.
"First of all, I want to apologise to UP CM Mayawati because it was
not she but the brother and son of the SP supremo (Mulayam Singh
Yadav) who got me framed in the case lodged at Babupurva police
station (in Kanpur)," Amar Singh wrote in his latest blog post,
without naming Ram Gopal Yadav (Mulayam's brother) and Akhilesh.

Amar Singh was referring to an FIR lodged against him and his wife
Pankaja in Babupurva police station (in Kanpur) in October last year
in connection with a financial fraud. The complainant, advocate Shiv
Kant Tiwari, had alleged that the couple had amassed nearly Rs 500
crore between 2003 and 2008.

"A functionary of my old party (SP) was given Rs 5 crore in first
tranche and then Rs 2 crore in second trance, a total of Rs 7 crore,
to frame me," he alleged, claiming that one Dhirendra Sahay, whom he
describes as Akhilesh Yadav's friend, among others, which included a
Congress Member of Parliament and a senior bureaucrat in Mayawati
administration, were aware of the conspiracy from the very beginning.

Akhilesh rejects charges

NEW DELHI: Akhilesh Yadav rejected Amar Singh's charge that he was
behind framing him in the financial fraud case. "I don't have any
friend by the name of Dhirendra Sahay. It is neither in my character
or nature nor in my habit to frame anybody in false charges ostensibly
to settle political scores," Akhilesh told The Indian Express . ENS

[ZESTCaste] Sorry to Mayawati, Cong; SP conspired against me: Amar Singh

http://www.hindustantimes.com/Sorry-to-Mayawati-Cong-SP-conspired-against-me-Amar-Singh/Article1-550811.aspx

Sorry to Mayawati, Cong; SP conspired against me: Amar Singh
Press Trust Of India
New Delhi, May 30, 2010

Charging Samajwadi Party leaders with conspiring against him, expelled
party leader Amar Singh today apologised to Uttar Pradesh Chief
Minister Mayawati and the Congress party for accusing them of framing
him in a Rs 500 crore financial fraud case.

"Fellow bloggers, this is my last blog posting on my previous party,
the Samajwadi Party. I want to apologise to Chief Minister Mayawati
because it was not she but the brother and son of SP supremo (Mulayam
Singh Yadav) who got me framed in the case lodged at Babupurva police
station (in Kanpur)," Singh said.

"The truth came to light after two brothers of a leading Mumbai-based
industrial family ended hostilities," he said apparently referring to
the Ambani brothers.

His latest blog posting is being seen as an effort to mend relations
with the BSP and Congress.

Singh claimed after the two brothers ended their rivalry, the
conspirators gave him all the details as they were worried about being
exposed.

"The two (brothers) would now set the matter straight with people who
have benefited from their rivalry," he added.

He said he felt "shameful" for accusing Mayawati and Congress party
when fingers were pointed towards him in the fraud case.

Singh said what he has mentioned in the blog cannot be denied as he
has documentary evidence, which he would bring before the people.

Claiming he was framed to damage his political prospects, Singh
alleged an SP office bearer was paid Rs seven crore for the purpose.
He, however, did not elaborate on this point.

In October last year, an FIR was lodged against Singh and his wife
Pankaja in Kanpur in connection with a fraud amounting to about Rs 500
crore.

In his 12-page document, the complainant, advocate Shiv Kant Tiwari
alleged that between 2003-2008 the couple amalgamated their companies
with other holdings and had amassed nearly Rs 500 crore in the
process.

[ZESTCaste] ‘Obstruction of yatra unfair, irrational'

http://www.hindu.com/2010/05/31/stories/2010053157080400.htm

Andhra Pradesh - Nalgonda

'Obstruction of yatra unfair, irrational'

Staff Reporter

NALGONDA: Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti (MRPS) president Manda
Krishna Madiga has termed the obstruction of the 'Odarpu Yatra' of
Kadapa Congress MP Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy by pro-Telangana protesters
in Mahabubabad in Warangal district as unfair and irrational. Mr
Krishna Madiga who was on his way to Vijayawada made a brief halt at
the R&B guesthouse in Suryapet on Sunday.

He told mediapersons that every citizen had a right to tour any part
of the country and express his views. "It is unfair to curtail this
freedom and politicise the 'Odarpu yatra' which was a personal
affair," he remarked.

Charge against Sonia

"Telangana struggle is a mighty movement which cannot be weakened by
individual tours," he observed. Congress president Sonia Gandhi is
adopting delaying tactics on separate Telangana and the TDP president
N Chandrababu Naidu is indulging in doublespeak on the issue, he
alleged. TRS leaders Harish Rao and E Rajender besides the Telangana
JAC convener Kodandaram, who camped in Mahabubabad for three days
ahead of Mr Jagan's tour, were not seen at the railway station during
the violence, he pointed out, adding that Konda Surekha and other
leaders remained at the scene along with their supporters despite the
volatile situation.

Dig at Jana

Taking a dig at former Home Minister K Jana Reddy, Mr Krishna Madiga
alleged that Mr Jana Reddy was resorting to double standards with
regard to Mr. Jagan's yatra.

[ZESTCaste] Census, consensus or caste aside? (Opinion)

http://www.asianage.com/opinion/census-consensus-or-caste-aside-381

Opinion
Census, consensus or caste aside?
May 29th, 2010 -- Antara Dev Sen Share

As the government sets up a committee — a group of ministers, no less
— to debate the inclusion of caste in the 2011 Census, a young
minister has gone public with his passionate appeal to the youth
brigade in Parliament to oppose the caste Census. "We are people's
representatives mandated by them to practice politics in the realm of
development aimed to benefit them", wrote Ajay Maken, minister of
state for home in an open letter to the young MPs. "Let us implement
our mandate and lead, rather than being led by divisive agendas for
short-term political gain."
An excellent thought. Especially at a time when Indian politics is
brimming over with divisive agendas which have emptied out ideology
from our more ambitious political parties. Maken believes that "a
regression into the realm of caste being the political agenda for the
next decades" would be "detrimental for all parties with a
developmental agenda, as well as the country in general". Absolutely.
In fact one tends to agree with the basic sentiments expressed in
Maken's well-intentioned letter. There's just one problem.
It is based on a false premise. "If we were to accept the proposal to
accept caste as a parameter in the Census, we would, for at least the
next 10-20 years institutionalise caste rather than development as the
National Political Agenda", he writes. Hate to break this to you,
Ajay, but caste has already been institutionalised by every political
party — even the Communists, the most egalitarian of the lot. And
looking away won't dislodge it. There may be many ways to loosen the
stranglehold of caste on Indian politics, but pretending it isn't
there is not one of them.
"The last decade saw development and good governance, rather than
caste or community being mandated by people across elections in
different states", explains the enthusiastic young minister. Perhaps
he forgets that this decade also saw the most fervently caste-based
party, dalit diva Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party, scale unbelievable
heights. Or that the development agenda leaned heavily on reservations
and other caste-based sops. And that "good governance" led to the
murder of thousands of Muslims in Gujarat in a spectacular killing
spree, as thousands of dalits, backward castes and tribals continued
to be killed and maimed in the name of caste or religion and deprived
of their basic rights and freedoms around the country. And that this
"development and good governance" curiously coincided with the furious
rise of Naxalism, which feeds on lack of development and governance.
"As young conscience driven individuals we have served the people and
thrived politically on the all-inclusive development agenda", Ajay
Maken writes. "Even in politically surcharged times of Mandal and
Mandir politics we swore by and took people along this agenda of
development sans caste and community." Really? You did? Wouldn't have
guessed.
By the way, who are these "young conscience-driven individuals" who
were so righteously active during the "Mandal and Mandir politics"?
Surely they would be somewhat long in the tooth by now if they have
been so diligently serving the people for 30 years? Besides, the young
MPs — from the Congress' gotra-loving Naveen Jindal to the Bharatiya
Janata Party's Muslim-hating Varun Gandhi — have not exactly been
championing liberal values and development. Maybe dear Ajay is
referring to the young-at-heart. Particularly in his grand old party,
the Congress.
In which case, what on earth is this letter about? Never mind.
Hopefully it would simply widen the debate on the caste Census, and
help us understand it better.
Right now, I am not quite sure why there is this huge hullabaloo over
the so-called caste Census. As far as I know, our Census already
records data on scheduled castes (SCs) and scheduled tribes (STs). It
may now add OBCs (other backward classes) to this. If you are not in
the SC, ST or OBC category you will not be affected. Chances are that
you won't get to say "My caste is Indian!" in an Amitabh Bachchan
baritone unless you come from an SC, ST or OBC family, and wish to
waive your access to the little extra push you are entitled to that
could even out the societal odds against you. And hold your horses,
proud brahmins and kshatriyas, no one is about to enumerate your
caste. This specific Census category is only about the deprived, those
who have been denied rights, freedoms, opportunities and dignity for
generations. And it is not drastically different from what is already
the norm in our Census. We will only get to know more about the OBC
population — the numbers, their economic, educational and other social
conditions — which will improve the delivery of development schemes
intended for them.
Clarity can never be the enemy of development. Since we expect to
tread the path of planned development and rectify social injustice
through development programmes for the backward castes, accurate data
on the beneficiaries would certainly help. Till now we have fallen
back on guesswork, extrapolating from the ancient data of the 1931
Census, when caste was last properly recorded. Development and good
governance come from real information, not arbitrary approximations.
Yet, one understands the ideological objection to a caste-recording
Census in a democracy that hoped to have eradicated caste decades ago.
One fears that such a move would encourage the politics of caste and
solemnise identity politics. But haven't we already done that? Our
elections are won as much on the logic of democracy as the logistics
of identity politics, including caste, gotra, religion and gender. Not
to mention money and muscle power. We can't wish these away. It would
be stunningly foolish to pretend that we don't pamper votebanks, that
we win on the strength of good governance, development and democratic
freedoms alone.
We can't run away from the hugely regressive mire of caste politics we
are rooted in. We need to turn back and look it in the eye, and do
whatever it takes to cut the tethers and shake off its hold on us.
But to accept a caste Census would be to admit to enormous failures.
The failure of our successive governments, of our energetic civil
society and of our democratic dreams. And admitting failure is always
a huge disincentive.
But once we overcome that block, take the caste bull by its horns, get
real facts and figures and examine them dispassionately from the point
of view of justice and freedom, we could perhaps free ourselves. And
finally become a nation truly dedicated to equality and justice.

[ZESTCaste] Do petitions at Petition Online.com get results? Please sign petition to end discrimination on dalit students in universities

Do petitions at PetitionOnline.com get results?

Short answer:  When was the last time you heard of a sincere apology from Microsoft or CNN?   Yes, online petitions can get results. Long answer:  The potential results of an online petition vary according to the petition request, who sponsors it, how well it is written and promoted, and the petition recipient. No one can fully control all these factors, so obviously, results will vary.

Often it may be most productive for you to define success in terms of the factors you can control. A petition can be an organizing tool, a tool for collective expression, and/or a way to raise the visibility of a legitimate viewpoint — as well as a results-oriented tool for advocacy. Petitions here have gotten more than 100,000 signatures in a week. When people join together online to express their views, it can make a difference To read some specific user feedback on petition effectiveness, please see  Comments

Dear Friends
Official records are revealing that in a span of two years (2008 and 2009) Four dalit students have committed suicide in Andhra Pradesh. They have also recorded one attempt suicide. . But there could be several more such cases which were either not reported or the reasons were distracted. In the recent past number of Dalit student's suicides cases as a whole in the country in educational institutions is increasing alarmingly. The situation needs urgent attention from not only the administration of those institutions but also all government departments, educationists and intellectuals.

Please Sign petition to End Discrimination against dalit students in universities and educational institutions -http://www.petitiononline. com/93466770/petition.html, it is addressed to President of India

Thanks and regards
