Dalit group questions seer's gestures

procession as part of Dalit Shudra Swabhimani Samavesha in Udupi on
Tuesday. Photo: Special Arrangement.
The former chairman of Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission
C.S. Dwarkanath said on Tuesday that Hinduism was at the crossroads
now.

Mr. Dwarkanath was inaugurating the Dalit Shudra Swabhimani Samavesha
(convention) organised by the Karnataka Dalit Sangharsha Samiti
(Bheemavada) here. Mr. Dwarkanath said his concept of Hindu religion
was the one supported by Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi, and Lord
Krishna. It was a tragedy that the broadminded ethos of Hinduism was
getting buried in Udupi. He said Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji of Pejawar
Math was trying to consolidate Hindu vote bank in the name of giving
"Vaishnava Deekshe" to Dalits. "While I respect the Pejawar seer as he
is senior to me in age, I cannot accept his thoughts," he said.

He said Lord Krishna had given his message that devotion was more
important than caste. There would have been no problem if the swamiji
wanted to give "Hindu Deekshe". But by saying that he would give
"Vaishnava Deekshe" to Dalits, the swamiji was giving more importance
to sectarianism.

He said the Krishna Temple in Udupi belonged to all the Hindus and not
to any particular math. Even the Supreme Court had in its ruling in
December 1961 made it clear the Krishna Temple had not been built for
private "pujas" of the swamijis of the Ashta Maths. Republican Party
of India State unit president M. Venkataswamy, State Convener of DSS
R. Mohanraj, Sarvajan Samaj Vedike State unit president B. Gopal, head
of Karnataka Komu Sauharda Vedike K.L. Ashok, State convener of DSS
G.P. Keragodu were present.

Mr. Dwarkanath said the Pejawar swamiji should allow Dalits to enter
the sanctum sanctorum of the Sri Krishna Temple. The BJP Government
was totally heartless to the plight of Dalits, he said.

Earlier, members of the DSS cleaned the Kanakadasa Mandira near Sri
Krishna Temple and prayed there. They took out a procession from the
Town Hall. A large number of people attended the convention.

[ZESTCaste] Dalit girls take 1st step towards empowerment

Dalit girls take 1st step towards empowerment
TNN, Nov 22, 2010, 05.18am IST

AHMEDABAD: It was convocation with a difference. For, the 2,138 girls
who passed out of Dalit Shakti Kendra on Sunday beamed not just with a
sense of pride but the knowledge of power to fight the discrimination
when they go back to their villages. Decked in chaniya cholis and
traditional dresses, they sat through the last day of their
three-month vocational courses where they were awarded degrees and
also prizes for participating in numerous competitions held towards
the end of their courses.

"I never thought I could speak in public, forget speaking up for
myself. But after spending three months here, I am ready to earn a
living, take a stand for my family and fight for my rights," said
Dhaval, a student who won three awards, including those for reading
and diary writing.

The girls were awarded certificates in the presence of international
experts on minority rights. The chief guest, Mallika Sarabhai,
exhorted each girl to become a force unto herself and ensure that
nobody practises or suffers discrimination.

Founder of Dalit Shakti Kendra Martin Mcwan said his biggest
achievement has been to witness empowerment among girls after the
course completion. "They may be learning anything from tailoring to
beauty course, but what they also learn is to respect themselves, that
being a dalit does not make them inferior. In the next 10 years, there
will be more than 10,000 girls passing out of this institution."

Past students who have found their feet in the society also shared
their experiences. One of them Praveena Purabiya talked about how she
had learnt embroidery from her Muslim neighbours but could not get
work due to her caste.

Raji Siruka, who did her course in basic computers, now works with a
corporate in Mithapur as an operator. "I have learnt that one has to
make one's own place in society", said Siruka.

Lucknow, Nov 21 (IANS) The National Commission for Scheduled Castes
Sunday rejected the Uttar Pradesh government's claims of bringing down
incidents of violence against Dalits, terming them 'baseless and
misleading'.

The commission's newly-appointed chairman P.L. Punia said the state
government released figures of only the first six months of this year,
and atrocities against Dalits had actually registered a steep rise
over the three-and-a-half year rule of Bahujan Samaj Party, according
to statistics by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).

Punia further accused the government of diverting funds meant for
Dalit welfare programmes.

'Construction of four medical colleges at Saharanpur, Azamgarh,
Kannauj and Jalaun was being carried out with the diverted money', he
said.

Punia said the government's move of reserving 70 percent of seats in
these colleges has been disallowed by the Medical Council of India.

He also gave the state government a deadline to furnish correct
details on welfare schemes.

'November 30 is the deadline I have fixed for these details, after
which I will convene a hearing with the concerned officials,' he said.

Punia, a bureaucrat turned Congress MP from Barabanki, was once part
of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati's inner circle.

He served as the principal secretary to the chief minister twice, but
later fell out with her. He switched loyalties to her arch rival
Mulayam Singh Yadav, before joining the Congress.

[ZESTCaste] Wall obstructing Dalits' pathway removed

http://www.hindu.com/2010/11/19/stories/2010111952700500.htm

Tamil Nadu - Tiruchi

Wall obstructing Dalits' pathway removed

R. Krishnamoorthy

TIRUCHI: Revenue officials on Thursday demolished the wall that
separated a path between two localities at Edamalaipattipudur in
Tiruchi.

The operation was carried out in the morning by the officials of the
City Corporation, the Revenue Department and the Police.

The demolition has been carried out in the wake of apprehensions
raised by the CPI (M) that delay in removing the wall could lead to
law and order problem.

Over the last one month, the party had been spearheading a campaign on
behalf of hundreds of Dalit families residing in one of the localities
for removal of the wall. The residents in Dalit locality had to use a
circumlocutory path to reach the Tiruchi-Madurai Highway.

Nearly 300 Dalits offered prayers on the occasion of 'Thirukarthigai' Day

Amid heavy police security, the Dalits in East Rajapalayam in the
Gengavalli block in Salem district successfully re-entered the ancient
Sri Chidambareshwarar temple in the village on Sunday, from which they
were barred. Dressed up in their best, 300 Dalits including women and
children, carrying garlands and fruits, offered prayers inside the HR
and CE-controlled temple on the 'Thirukarthigai' Day. "We are happy,"
said a Dalit after offering the prayers.

The Dalits entered the temple on October 3 "for the first time in
their lives," according to a 65- year old Dalit labourer.

'Diktat'

But it was said that the caste Hindus, once again, passed a 'diktat'
barring them from entering the temple, thus forcing them to seek
government intervention.

Tense situation

Since Saturday night, the village has remained tense. Heavy police
pickets were posted to prevent any untoward incident.

Revenue officials including Attur RDO V Sirajunnisa and policemen from
the nearby Veeraganur station rushed to the spot and held peace talks.

Later, senior police officials, led by SP Y. John Nicholson, arrived
at the village. The talks went on near the temple for nearly three
hours. The SP told the caste Hindus that none had the right to prevent
anyone from worshipping at the temple. Finally they relented and
withdrew from the temple areas.

Police asked the Dalits to enter the temple peacefully and not to
burst crackers. About 4 pm, the Dalits entered the temple and offered
poojas. The SP also told the caste Hindus and Dalits to maintain
peace.

Dalits celebrate Karthigai Deepam in Chidambareshwarar temple

November 22, 2010 – 10:48 am By Agalya G.S

Salem, Nov 22 (TruthDive): About 300 Dalits including women and
children carrying garlands and fruits dressed up in their best offered
prayers inside the Chidambareshwarar temple in East Rajapalayam at
Salem district on the 'Thirukarthigai' Day. It may be noted that they
were not allowed to enter the temple by few local groups earlier this
year.

According to a 65 year old Dalit labourer, they had entered the temple
on October 3 2010 for the first time in their lives.

It was said that the caste Hindus, again passed a 'diktat' barring
them from entering the temple, thus forcing them to seek government
interference. Since Saturday night, the village was tensed, heavy
police pickets were posted to prevent any unpleasant incidents.

Revenue officials including RDO V Sirajunnisa and policemen from the
Veeraganur station rushed to the districts spot and held peace talks
with the people opposing to this issue.

Later on Saturday, senior police officials led by SP Y. John
Nicholson, assembled at the village. The talks went on for nearly
three hours at the temple. The SP told the caste Hindus that no one
had the right to prevent anyone from worshipping at the temple.
Finally the caste Hindus relented and withdrew from the temple areas.

Police asked the Dalits to enter the temple peacefully without
bursting crackers. By evening 4 pm, the Dalits entered the temple and
offered poojas. The SP also told the caste Hindus and Dalits to
maintain peace to prevent chaos.
