Ambedkar slams Athavale for violence
Saturday, December 17, 2011
By A Special Correspondent

The Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh president and grandson of Dr Babasaheb
Ambedkar, Prakash Ambedkar is very upset with the violence which took
place in and around Indu Mill on Thursday afternoon. He has made it
clear that the whole episode was unwarranted and has sent out a wrong
message among to the masses.

The Republican Party of India (RPI) workers went on rampage outside
and inside Indu Mill over the issue of Dr Ambedkar's memorial on mill
land. The incidence of arson and stone pelting created fear in the
entire Shivaji Park vicinity. Prakash Ambedkar, when contacted by ADC,
expressed his displeasure over the riot-like situation created by the
RPI workers.

He said, "On December 6, my brother Anandraj Ambedkar with his
Republican Sena occupied the mill land and are till now in possession
of the plot. What was the necessity for taking out a morcha for the
same demand? RPI president Ramdas Athawale must have felt that
somebody else will get the credit for getting land for the memorial.
So he plunged into an agitation and resorted to violent tactics".

The government has announced that it will part with only four acres of
land, indirectly rejecting the demand for the entire 12.5 acres plot.
Asked to comment on this, Prakash said, "The government, which was
initially not ready to budge an inch, this time around has shown the
willingness to grant four acres. Now the rest can be done with
persuasion and I am sure the Ambedkarites will get the entire land for
the memorial. See, these are legal matters and should be handled
carefully. But some people are trying their level best to extract a
political mileage out of this sensitive issue, which is highly
objectionable".
