Police says they opened fire as there was no other option

Madurai, Nov 16(PTI)Police told the Madras High Court bench here that
the firing incident at Paramakudi in Ramanathapuram district, that led
to the death of seven persons in September, was the result of violent
behaviour of a rampaging crowd that set ablaze several vehicles and
attacked shops and houses. In a counter affidavit filed yesterday to a
PIL by Thol Thirumavalavan, Lok Sabha MP and president of Viduthalai
Chiruthaigal Katchi, seeking a CBI probe into the incident, P Rajesh
Das, IGP, South Zone, said many people would have succumbed to the
violence if the police had not opened fire. He said police opened fire
only after getting orders from the Executive Magistrate. There was no
other option as all other methods including conciliatory talks,
warnings, air shots, lathi charge and tear gas shots did not have any
impact The violent crowd assaulted 104 policemen and attacked many
houses and shops in the area and blocked traffic protesting the arrest
of Dalit leader John Pandian at Vallanadu in Tuticorin district on
September 11. "Though Thirumavalavan was always fighting for good
causes of Dalits, the present case alone was filed with a lot of
incorrect and suppressed facts and not intended to bring about
communal harmony", Das said in his affidavit. The petitioner could
place all his grievances before the commission (constituted by
government under the chairmanship of retired High Court Judge K
Sampath) and even suggest for remedial measures to curb caste clashes,
it said. "Instead of doing so,he has chosen to file a writ petition
with a view to punish police officers as if they are particularly
acting against the interest of Dalit people", Das said in his
affidavit.
